Wallowing In The Past

He remembered everything. He remembered each detail. The way he used to ruffle his hair, the way he used to moan about homework, the pranks they played. The way he argued with Evans, the way he led his team to victory, the way he used to throw the quaffle, the way his eyes lit up at the mention of Evans, the look on his face whenever he kissed Evans, the way he used to play with the golden snitch...

Sirius Black rested against the headboard. 14 years passed since the death of his best friend and he couldn't help but remember. Think about the 'if-onlys. If only he had become the secret keeper, if only he he had suspected the rat, if only he had not come up with that brilliant plan...

"Sirius."

Sirius' head snapped up. Remus was leaning against his bedroom door. He tore his eyes away from him. He searched for something, just anything, to watch. Even it was spider, he was okay with it.

His eyes fell on the picture of the Marauders.

"You're still blaming yourself," Remus stated as he walked in. Sirius refused to respond.

"It was not you fault," Remus said softly. Sirius quickly turned his head.

"It was," he said confidently but what came out was a croak.

"Stop blaming yourself," Remus chided.

"Just leave me Remus, leave me," Sirius said dejectedly.

"I can't," Remus countered quietly, "You're my brother. I can't leave a brother wallowing. I already lost one brother, I can't lose another."

Sirius gritted his teeth. Remus didn't understand. He wanted to wallow in self pity, and Remus comes barging in, disturbing the ominous atmosphere.

"I'm thankful that I disturbed you, you know."

Damn that idiot werewolf!

"Cursing me and calling me a werewolf is not going to help."

"You know me too well," Sirius muttered.

Remus didn't answer.

They sat on his bed in silence. He opened his bedside drawer. A golden snitch lay inside. He picked it up. It was the same snitch James used to play with. Tears gathered in his eyes.

James...

His best friend had died because of his stupidity. He could never forget his mistake. It was the biggest mistake he had ever committed, none could top the mistake that cost James his life.

"I'll come back later Padfoot," Remus said after an hour of silence.

Sirius closed his eyes. It wouldn't do him any good to be angry with Remus.

"Thanks Moony," Sirius smiled. Remus just smiled back at him and walked out. Before closing the door, he looked back at Sirius and said,

"Remember: For after all, the best thing one can do when it is raining is let it rain. Now, even if it's the best thing, I can't let that happen."

James whacked Sirius.

"Don't you dare moan to me about rain again," he said in angry tone, "We can't do anything. for after all, the best thing one can do when it is raining is let it rain, and we are going to let it rain."

Sirius smiled widely.

A loud screech interrupted the silence of the house. A loud POP and Kreacher apparated, nose touching the floor as he bowed.

"The hippogriff is injured, Master," Kreacher croaked. Sirius got up.

He had to tend to his companion.
