She could hear sniffling from the next room. It wasn't surprising, really. She had been crying for the past week as well, ever since... No, you can't think about that... Still, she felt bad, as if the entire situation was her fault. She walked to the door of the adjoining room. "Nessie?" she said, as softly as possible.

Nessarose was curled up into a little ball on her bed. Glinda suddenly felt an extreme sense of pity. The girl was sobbing, and had no hand to wipe a tear away with! Glinda quickly went to sit down beside her on the bed, and wiped the tears away herself. "There, there," she clucked, knowing it was doing no good.

Nessa looked more angry than upset now. "She abandoned me."

"No she didn't. She just couldn't do all of this anymore." Glinda said, gesturing to the school. "It had nothing to do with you or me." So quit staring at me like I killed your sister, and let me help you.

"It's still not right... If I ever see her again, I'll... I'll... oh, being a Unionist, I can't say what I'll do!" She broke into sobs again. Glinda was able to figure out what she had been about to say.

"Hush.. hush now." Glinda leaned forward impulsively and kissed the younger girl's forehead. Nessarose looked up in surprise and her expression softened. The stared at each other for a long moment and then Nessa leaned up and lightly kissed Glinda's lips.

That night, Nanny came home to find them curled together innocently, like kittens. She shook her head, but decided the closeness would do some good so she said nothing. Without the third, these two would need to stick together.
