'Twinkle twinkle little star'

She tosses in her sleep. The window is open, exposing her to the cold breezy night.

'How I wonder what you are'

Her eyes open blearily. She sits up and props herself up on her pillow. She frowns slightly at the end of the bed and her feet sticking out from underneath the covers, so that's why she woke up… Damn covers are too short…

She sighs in frustration as she glances at the illuminated clock by her bed. 2.41 am. Wonderful.

'Up above the world so high'

Huh? Who else is crazy enough to be awake at this time? She cocks her head to listen. It's not hard to tell it's coming from the window. She's now awake, eyes fully open and gazing at the sky.

Damn, how the hell is she supposed to get to sleep now? She draws back the covers, hops out of bed and neatly places her slippers on her now freezing feet. Why did she have to leave the window open she grumbles irritably as she flicks her hair out of her eyes.

'Like a diamond in the sky'

She stumbles along the corridors in short nightgown, being careful to slink past each doorway. She can't hear it anymore. Everyone seems to be sensibly asleep. The thought of her warm bed is extremely enticing right now.

'Twinkle twinkle little star'

Got you now! It's only faint but it's all she needed. Upstairs. Outside. The balcony. She tiptoes quietly, seems a shame to disturb them. They've left the balcony door open and now the living room is ice cold too. She shivers, wishing she'd grabbed her fluffy dressing gown. She stays quiet, not daring to breathe as she edges closer to the doorway, trying to get a better view.

'How I wonder what you are'

The stars are speckled across the dark sky, paint flashed over the night canvas. She smiles, her small mystery solved as she watches him sit perfectly balanced on the balcony rail, arms crossed. He stares into the frosty night, bearing the cold bare-chested in his quiet trance.

'G'night papa.'
