Other

Even as he looks up at Obi-wan through blurred eyes, Qui-gon sees a vision of a young man on the planet Tatooine. Though he shares some features with Anakin, this is not the same person. He is alone – a Jedi, yet not; filled with potential, yet untrained. No other stands with him. But a cloaked figure – almost hidden beyond a far rise – he recognizes as his own apprentice, Obi-wan.

"Obi-wan," he whispers hoarsely. "Promise – promise me you will train the boy."

A choked sob. "Yes master."

Qui-gon reaches up and gently brushes his fingers along Obi-wan's cheek. "He – is the Chosen One," he whispers. "He – will bring balance. Train… him."

Obi-wan's head bobs in acknowledgement, almost frantically, and even as Qui-gon's eyes close he realizes with regret that his apprentice does not understand. He believes the one he has committed to teach is the boy both have left in the hangar of this once-peaceful planet.

But as his consciousness ebbs away, Qui-gon knows it is for the best.
