Hello! This is my first fan fiction piece, so go easy on me please. Constructive criticism only please! Also I am looking for a Beta Reader, because my spelling and grammar is occasionally atrocious.
Usual disclaimer applies. I don't own anything, I just like to have fun in Paramount's giant sandbox. Enjoy!
Chapter 1 – Kiera
Three months before Voyager's disappearance into the Badlands
'Kiera, come back here!' my Mother yelled at me. 'We need to talk about this!'
'I don't want to!' I yelled back my voice sounding very childish.
Then again I was a child whether I wanted to believe that or not. I ran up to my room and slammed the door. It was always the good thing about living in an old 20th century style house. You had the satisfying ability to slam the doors. Loudly.
'Why do you always have to make thing more complicated than they actually are?!' Mom yelled back her voice muffled slightly by the shut door.
'Because you never tell me anything!' I yelled back. Why do I always have to argue back? She always wins anyway. Why couldn't I just shut up for once?
'Stop being ridiculous! And come out here now!' Mom's voice to on a dangerously deep tone. Her evil Captain's voice as I had nicknamed it. It was a voice that sent every green ensign cowering into a corner, never to be seen again.
'Kathryn? What the hell's going on?'
Great, now my grandmother is in on it.
'She's locked herself in her room!' Mom said speaking more calmly than she had all morning. Grandma had that effect on people.
'What did you do?' Grandma said laughing slightly.
'I didn't do anything. Kiera insisted on talking about her father and…Well look what happened'
'That would have done it. You know you should just tell her.'
'Tell me what?' I said curiously.
'She's nine. I don't have to tell her anything!' Mom said walking away from the door.
'Maybe, but she's far smarter than your average nine year old. She'd understand.' Said Grandma soothingly.
'No. You saw how she reacted when I told her Mark and I were getting married! She may be smarter than the average but her maturity level is about the same.'
Okay that part was true. I didn't like Mark. He was so…Mark! Boring and as dull as dirty dish water and my mom is just…not. He doesn't even like Molly, our Red Setter that much. What my mother sees in him I'll never know.
'Oh Kathryn, you can't help her for being curious. Imagine if you never knew your Daddy, wouldn't you want to know as much as possible about him. Like, for example, who the hell he is?'
I love how my Grandma is always on my side.
My ear was pressed into the key hole, straining to hear as they both moved away from the door.
'I don't want to discuss it, Mom.' Said mom trying to end the conversation.
Grandma wasn't having it.
'I know you don't. But one day that girl is going to go looking for him. And knowing Kiera, she will find him. How would you feel then?'
I didn't hear Mom's reply.
It was so stupid really. We always had arguments like this just before she was due to leave on a mission. Maybe because I just didn't want her to go. It had been nice just having my Mom around for a while.
Okay that also meant I had to deal with Mr Boring aka Mark. But I had had my mom to myself for almost six months.
Now she was going away again on her bright and shiny new ship Voyager. Truth was all I really wanted, was to come with her. Mom would never let me. She always said that space was too dangerous for a young child, I had to stay at home and study. Then maybe when I was old enough I could come with her on a mission.
'Kiera! Come down and say good bye!' yelled Grandma from the bottom of the stairs.
I huffed loudly, hoping at least some of my annoyance would carry downstairs.
As I arrived I decided the best course of action would be to stare at my feet.
'Kiera?' Grandma said in a warning tone.
'What?' I replied, still staring at my feet. I really should cut my toenails.
'Oh just leave it, mom,' Said mom. Still irritated I see.
Grandma ignored her.
'Kiera?'
'Fine.'
I finally looked up to see my mom standing there in front of me. Her auburn bun of steel tried back with not a hair out of place. Her command red pristine uniform looked as though it had never been worn, and of course, who could forget those stern grey eyes glaring, transfixed, on me.
'Bye, Mom.' I said still annoyed with her.
'Bye, Kiera…I love you,' said Mom, her expression softening. 'I'll be back in a few months. Be good.'
'I'm always good,' I said smiling slightly.
Mom beamed that full wattage smile that could light up the whole room and said,
'I know you are. I love you, Kiera.'
'I love you too, mom,' I said hugging her close.
'Look after Molly for me.'
'I will.'
'Mark's here.' Grandma said as she looked out of the window. Well, there went my good mood.
'Mark, Shmark.' I said quietly. Mom still heard me.
'Kiera Janeway!'
'What I never said anything.'
'Just a bit of background static was it?' Mom said, not believing me for a second.
'Hi, everyone. Hi Kiera.' Said Mark, cheerfully. I rolled my eyes at him. Luckily Mom didn't see.
'Hi Mark.' Mom said smiling her half smile and leaning up to kiss him. Ew. Why?
'You ready to go Kath?' said Mark, blushing slightly from the kiss. What a weirdo.
'Yep. Ready as I'll ever be.'
'Alright. Lets go!' Mark began to jog down the steps.
'Bye, Mom,' I said, waving.
'Janeway to Space Dock,' Said Mom, I command mode once more. Her four pips gleaming in the sun.
'Space dock here, Captain.'
'Two to beam up.' She smiled at me one last time before the transporter beam whisked her away.
