"Life is not just about the good things or not just about the bad things. It is both. It all depends where you focus your attention."
― Ann Marie Aguilar
Dr. Victor Cannerts had came to tell Katie that he was unable to find the medication she was looking for,"I'm sorry I couldn't find what you need." He paused a moment as he saw Katie close her eyes and let out a heavy sigh,"I can look for something comparable," He offered and then stopped, not wanting to make any promises he couldn't keep,"But finding the balance in medications like these can be complicated."
"I'm all too familiar with that dance." She told him, looking at him through the mirror that was in front of her. Her frustration clear on her face. She was sick of it all, and just wanted to go home. But then she never would have met Jake, so she was not sure...Maybe she would have, it might had taken more time, but maybe she would have.
"Hey." Jake said as he came in, breaking Katie's train of thought,"Everything OK?" He asked concerned by the look on her face.
"Yeah." Katie lied,"Dr. Cannerts was looking for some allergy medicine for Britney." She didn't want to lie, but she was afraid of what he might think of her - that he might think less of her - if she told him the truth. She didn't know why it mattered, but somehow it affected her how he saw her.
"I'm afraid our pharmaceutical supplies are rather low." Dr. Cannerts went along with her lie.
"Hey. I'm, uh, I'm heading out on patrol. Have you seen my... my black T-shirt?" Jake asked a little embarrassed, not because of Katie, but because of Cannerts' presence. And he felt like he had just interrupted into something serious.
"That one?" Katie said as she smiled and him and pointed the object in discussion,"It was pretty ripe." She told him as a way of joking.
"You actually touched that thing." Jake questioned as he took the shirt off the wire and proceed to put it on. What Katie did was a sweet gesture, no one had done for him in along time. He was really touched. It may be a simple task, but for him it meant lots.
"I wore gloves." Katie chuckled and joked,"I'll trade you for that health hazard you've got on." She said hinting him that the grey undershirt he kept wearing was getting dirty and needed to be cleaned.
"Oh, you don't want to touch this one. It's toxic." Katie laughed at his comment and then passed him a smile as he went on his patrol. As she watched him go, there was only one thing going on in her mind, prayer that he would come back safe and uninfected.
Dr. Cannerts watched the exchange that took place between the two of them. He had just realised how close the two of them had grown in the short period. And he could tell it wasn't just plain friendship they felt for each other, at least not from Katie's end. She was in deeper than she let on. He could see the way she was able to relax and joke with Jake even when she had tons of her own problem to deal with. He had noticed when she had closed her eyes when Jake left and he could tell she was praying for his safe return.
Maybe something good had came out of this widespread after all.
