"I don't need help from a filthy little Mudblood like her!" Lily Evans' world stopped. "Take it back," James Potter advanced on Severus Snape. "Take. It. BACK!" James roared, defending his Lily. It was pure instinct that denied James' help. Lily turned to her (ex) best friend.
"Fine. If that's how you feel, I won't help anymore." She reached blindly for someone to comfort her, hold her. Her hand found James' and hazel met emerald. Lily could see all the love James had for her in that one gaze.
"Come on, James. We're obviously not wanted here." James wrapped his arm around Lily and she curled into him, pulling herself close to him.
On the couch near the fire, Lily sat and cried. She cried for her hopeless friend, the destruction of her innocence, and the end of her childhood.
"Lily?" James spoke softly from his seat next to her. "If you ever need a friend, I'm here." Lily's puffy eyes met James' earnest ones, searching for any hint of doubt. When she found none, the broken redhead threw her arms around the messy-haired boy and put her head on his shoulder.
"J-James?" His heart shattered at the pain in her voice. "Yeah, Lily?" '... Thank you." James didn't understand. "What are you thanking me for? I ruined your oldest friendship." "No, you save me from it." James wanted to take her pain on himself. "Well then, by giving me a chance, you saved me from myself." And with that, James leaned down and kissed Lily, slowly beginning to heal her.
