Hey! It's one-shot time! *sings*
O! Please go read my comic! Pretty please? It's at
~`~
Duo woke panting, almost screaming, in a dead sweat. Shakily he reached for his braid, and drew it over his shoulder protectively. *Oh god . . .* He wiped hot tears from his eyelashes, and scrunched his face up in an attempt to not produce more. *God, god god! What if it's true? What if it's going to happen?* He twisted his braid subconsciously in his hands. *What if . . . What if . . .*
He jerked when the door of his room opened a crack, and a head ducked inside. Caught like a deer in headlights, he couldn't help but stare wide- eyed at the new presence. Obsidian eyes took in his crouched, tense form in the dim lighting, and traveled from his damp eyes to his now-ragged braid.
"Maxwell, are you alright?" Wufei's solid voice, full of strength and warmth, broke his trance and he shivered once.
"Just-just a nightmare." *I hope.* Duo closed his eyes slowly, and then opened them again, reassuring himself with a tug on his braid. "Just a nightmare."
"Would you care to talk about it?" Wufei stepped fully into the room, but kept to the door. "Sometimes, it helps." At Duo's assent, he moved beside the bed, and folded into a cross-legged sitting position on the thread-bare rug.
"I-Well, er, there wasn't much . . . just the usual stuff at first." He hesitated, and then sneered half-heartedly. "Once again, I got to relive everybody I've ever loved dying."
He started at a hand closing over his for a brief moment, so brief that he had trouble believing it had ever been there. He glanced at his listener, but Wufei was studying the floor quite intently. "I-have dreams like those too." He smiled-almost.
The two sat in silence for several minutes, before Duo found his voice again.
"And then, there's . . . you." He looked to his braid, so he wouldn't have to look at the other. "You're everywhere. And it's so warm, and golden, and wonderful. You smile at me, and I feel like even if the world were destroyed tomorrow, it wouldn't matter, as long as you would keep smiling at me like that." At this point, he glanced at his companion, and was surprised to see a faint, dusky pink, barely hidden by the darkness, spread across his bronze cheeks.
Duo curled in on himself, and clutched his braid tighter. "And then, you're gone. Everything is white and void and so completely -empty-. And I want to die because I'm so very lonely . . ."
Again, he felt a weathered callused hand on his, and looked into the obsidian depths, and saw understanding and something more . . . before he was surrounded by tawny arms and there was a voice in his ear: "I will never leave you, Duo." A whisper, barely heard.
And then Wufei was softly padding towards the door. Duo stared after him for a moment, before untangling himself from his cotton sheets and running after the black-haired boy. He wrapped his arms around the stiff shoulders and squeezed tight.
"Maxwell-" he choked, "I can't breathe-"
"I won't ever leave you either, 'Fei." He released him, and when Wufei turned around to stare at him. "Goodnight," he said, before pushing him gently out the door-looking like a fish out of water-and closing it in his face.
Duo grinned. His dreamscape was suddenly looking much better.
