Chapter 1: Unova

'Breaking News: Nimbasa City is currently in wreckage after another bombing. It is thought that over one hundred are dead, with many more missing or fatally injured. Gym Leader Elise is among the missing.'
Goosebumps spread across my arms, as if a cold wind blew over me.
"Elise is missing…" I murmured to myself. "Elise just missing, that's it. She's not dead and will be found in a couple of hours. Maybe less. That's all." I repeated, desperately trying to convince myself as my shaking hands reached for the remote, not able to stand looking at the devastating scenes before me.
"Stop this!" I chided myself, glaring at my hands through watery eyes, "You need to be stronger than this! Elise is going to be fine. She's not dead. She can't be…"
Today was the second bombing in the same amount of days, Opulidad City was bombed yesterday, a direct attack at the two gym leaders of the city, Drake and Iris. They narrowly escaped, and have now taken up residence with me and my team.
I tried to steady my breathing, I had work to do.
Today, I will spend trying to salvage as many residents of Nimbasa city. There was a lot more to do than Opulidad, the whole city had been affected by the blast, and very few buildings remain standing. There was also Elise. She was a vital member in our rebellion team against Team Plasma. She was also a very close friend…
The warmth and tickling sensation of a hand on my shoulder caused me to jump. I rubbed my eyes with the back of my hand before turning. I couldn't be seen as weak, not when everyone was looking to me.
Black's chocolate brown eyes stared back into mine, his ever present smile held tightly on his face. Forced. I could see the concern and distress that was hidden beneath his warm twinkling eyes. In times like this, is was great to have someone like Black who knew me as well as I knew him, to see past the façade we held to help others, but could then console in each other. I remember the night when Team Plasma had first started to… kill… to get what they wanted. Black and I sat up all night just hugging and crying. Having someone who I didn't have to be strong around, that's the only thing that kept me sane.
"Any word from Nimbasa yet?" I cringed as my voice creaked. Black just shook his head, and then wrapped his arms around me.
"I don't think we can do this without him, Black-"
"Yes we can. We don't need that freak." He replied in a cold, hard voice.
I pulled back from the embrace, "He's a hero, he's meant to be here. Look how far we're getting! More and more people are dying every day!" Tears started forming, "Don't you see, we aren't getting any stronger, Team Plasma just keeps pushing us back. We don't even have a plan! They're already ten steps ahead." Black's eyes stared back into mine; they were as cold and hard as his voice earlier. He let out a sigh, running a hand through in hair.
"You're right." He sighed again in defeat. I stared at him is shock. I was surprised he had even in, usually when I brought up the other hero, Black fought back viciously, adamant we didn't need his help. Maybe the gravity of this situation was, finally, beginning to sink in. That past experiences were in the past, and it was time to put down our pride and ask for help.
A small smile pulled at the corners of my mouth. There was very little to smile about nowadays, and each genuine one should be treasured. Black smiled back at me, as I felt his arms pull me in for another hug, hands settling on my waist. I sighed and rested my head on his chest. One hand left my waist and began playing with the curls of my hair.
A loud cough from the direction caused us to jump apart instinctively, pulling me out of the temporary bliss. Cheren stood awkward at the door, a stern look on his face.
"W-white, Black, I have some… am… news from Nimbasa…" he managed to stutter out. Dread slammed into me like a ton of bricks. This was bad, Cheren was always calm and collected, even if it was something bad. This was very very bad.
Black's hand reached for mine, giving it a small squeeze before leading me out of the control room, following Cheren.
Our communication room was equipped with as many various electronics as we had managed to retrieve from various raids of Team Plasma stations. On the wall, one of the video chats displayed a distraught looking gym caretaker, the image flickered badly every couple of seconds. In the background the wreckage of Nimbasa sent a shiver down my spine. In the corner of the room Iris was crouched in a ball, shaking as her sobs filled the room. Beside her Belle was trying desperately to console her, as her own tears raced down her cheeks.
My throat started to close up, my muscles tightening as the fear and panic of the worst pumped through me. My head spun with possible scenarios, making me feel nauseous.
"Ah, Miss White," The caretaker greeted me, not even trying to smile. I nodded; my mouth now too dry to speak. I was scared.
"I, we," he nodded to the subway masters behind him with solemn faces, "have to report to you some… t-terrible news." He spluttered, his eyes to the ground, but I could see him blink back the tears.
"We found- we found Miss Elise. We found her- her body." I struggled to catch what he was reporting with all his stuttering, and it took me awhile to understand, leaving the room in silence.
"W-what?" I whispered and I finally regained my speech. "She…she what… No, no, no ,no- She's can't be. You, you must be-" My voice creaked as tears caused me to choke. Finally turning to sobs that I couldn't hold in any longer. I didn't want to be strong any more. I wanted to hide and cry.
It was a good fifteen minutes before my tears stopped, but my breathing was still heavy and I tried to restrain myself. We were now all crowed around a coffee table, littered with information, blueprint and various strategies.
"So…" Belle started her eyes still puffy and red, "What are we going to do next?" she spoke softly, just above a whisper, her voice raspy and dry.
She was right. There was nothing else we could do. We couldn't sit around and mope all day. We had to move on. Elise was a great lose, but there was millions of Unovans who needed us. A plan started to map out in my head, the clock was ticking.
"We're going to search for N." I stated loud and clear, becoming the leader I needed to be. "Black and I are anyway." I turned to Belle, "Belle, you will take a team with you to Nimbasa and help the Subway Masters look for more survivors and to get them to a safe shelter." She nodded in reply and I forced a smile, turning to Iris. "Iris, I want you to stay here and keep in contact with all the Gym Leaders, Elite Four and Alder and report any news to Cheren. Also, I want you to get in contact with that Ashy boy you were talking about from Kanto. We need to contact the other regions. We cannot remain cut off any longer." Then finally I turned to Cheren, "I want you to organise teams to infiltrate some of Team Plasma's bases, we're running low on supplies and we need to slow down there attacks."
They all gawked at me in surprise, before Iris stood up with her brightest smile, eyes still glistening from her tears, "Yes Boss!" I smiled a small smile as lifted her own, and everyone else's spirits. The group dispersed and soon Black and I were left alone once more.
"So partner," Black whispered in my ear, "where are we off to first?"
"Dragonspiral Tower."
