Chapter 2: Goodbye Gorgos

After retrieving my partner's axe, I knelt down beside him to see if he was fine. He took quite a hit from those fireballs and the burn on his right arm covered a large area. Who would even try to block a dragon's breath with his bare arms? I mean honestly, he could've just used the axe, but whatever. I got out a burn salve and applied it as gently as possible on his arm. He flinched a little, even if he was unconscious. I then carefully wrapped his arm with bandages. After finishing up, I looked around the cave and back at him. I can't help thinking how this scrawny kid managed to shatter a large chunk of ice with only his bare fist, and an injured arm to boot. I guess I'll ask him later.

I got up and made my way toward the Red Gorgos. The beast lay there sprawled on the ground, its mouth opened wide. For some weird reason, I felt compelled to stick my arm inside the beast's mouth and feel around the slimy cavern until my hand came across something hard. In a swift motion, I pulled it out and there, on my palm, sat a purple fragment that seemed to be broken off a huge crystal. Despite the saliva, it still looked elegant, the smooth surface glowing faintly. The glow steadily increased its intensity until it became too bright that I had to drop it to shield my eyes. The fragment discharged a menacing purple wave that pulsed across the cave. The rumble of a thousand footsteps echoed everywhere.

The cave I came from was suddenly full of glowing purple eyes, leering at us from the darkness. Collective growls from a hundred or so monsters echoed around me. Slowly, they crept out of the cave and made their way little by little toward me and my unconscious partner.

"Hey, Micah, get up!" I called out to him, but he was still knocked out.

Frantically, I raised my arm and threw three small cubes around me that expanded into crates upon hitting the ground. The crates opened to reveal turrets that launched projectiles that explode in mid-air, releasing more missiles that showered the monsters below. The monsters started to thin out. It seemed as though my plan was working, but they kept on coming and coming. The turrets exploded after exhausting all their ammo. I drew my gun.

"Shockwave!" I yelled, as I shot at the ground below a group of monsters. The small explosion pushed them back and scattered them. My eyes darted around, scanning the horde and Iconcentrated. Breathe in. Breathe out. In a swift motion, I systematically aimed and shot at the monsters charging blindly toward me, the non-lethal shots knocking them out. I kept at it as though my gun was aiming itself, until click, click,it decided to overheat at the worst possible time. They inched closer and closer. Some of the Gons from the backline started to break off their eggshells and throw the white-orange fragments at me. I had to buy some time.

'Time', I thought, 'that's it!'

I took out a pet card from my belt pouch and threw it down on the ground. In a flash of light a little robot made of brass appeared. Its head was too big for its bell shaped body and had no arms and legs. On its back was a winding key that started spinning and something it inside whirred and clicked. Wings popped out from two slits on either side of the key and the robot floated off the ground toward me.

"Killian, I need you to distract the monsters while I get Micah out of here," I said to the little brass robot. I have yet to figure out a way to get us out of here, though, I guess I'll just wing it from here on out.

I scanned around for potential exits. Obviously, the cave opening was a no-no, as it was crowded. I looked back and observed the wall behind me. It was too thick, and judging from our location, we must still be along the middle of the mountain. It would take ages to dig through. One option remained, though. I looked up and saw the various cracks on the ceiling that let sunlight shine through.

'Those cracks,' I thought.

"High-power rush!" I shouted as I deployed a missile box containing dozens of warheads. Locking onto the ceiling, I stomped down on the kick pad and launched the missiles upward. Debris fell as missiles exploded above me. Some of the larger chunks fell on some of the monsters. My missiles left a jagged hole large enough for six people to go through all at once without touching. Perfect.

I bent over to pick up the shard, wrapping it with a handkerchief and putting it away in my belt pouch. I lifted Micah up by his armpits and wrapped one of his arms around my neck. I didn't know where to put his axe, so I decided to leave it for now. I bent my knees and readied myself for a rocket jump. I alerted Killian that we were ready to jump, and he flew towards me. I jumped up, and two magic circles appeared by my ankles. The magic circles let loose a blast of blue energy that propelled me upward through the hole and out the cave. We descended slowly and landed along the mountainside. It was a little steep and rocky, but at least we were safe from the monsters. After setting Micah down beside me, I loaded my gun with a canister and shot it skyward. The projectile left a trail of red smoke as it soared upward. It was a signal. I just hope Bianca sees it.

Soon enough, a runic circle appeared below us. It grew ever brighter until all I could see was the white glow that swallowed the three of us in what seemed to be a dome made of light. I closed my eyes and felt my body de-materialize and become one with the light, as if we were two liquids mixing together in a beaker of water. Then the dome shot high into the sky and towards the guild tower.
