Hey hey hey! This will be the third time I've re-written this chapter, gotta love important plot points.
DJ: It's like they're necessary for good writing.
Shut up, just, literally shut up.
DJ: Make me.
*Brawl ensues*
OUCH!
Carla waved a lazy farewell at the young thief scurrying away. Chuckling darkly she turned and entered her shack.
"They always think they can trick Carla." The insides of the shack resembled a single room log cabin, much larger than the shack that appeared on the outside, but still cramped and musty. Carla stepped towards the table that was placed in the center of the room and placed her hands on the rim of the large, rusted cauldron that sat atop. Inside its murky depths a moving image formed of the boy placing the necklace around his neck. As the pendant hit his skin an inky energy pulsated from the cauldron. A screech of laughter erupted from Carla.
"It has been so long. Come on out, dear one." Against the left wall sat a dirty bed that seemed as though it would collapse in on itself at any moment. From underneath emerged a Jolteon with an unmistakable green shine. A dark aura hung about the pokemon, an anger that seemed to radiate from within. Through a series of growls and barks, the creature communicated with Carla.
"Yes, yes, all shall be as I promised, as long as I get my payment?" She slowly extended an greedy hand to the pokemon, waiting for her fee. With a grim look of determination, the Jolteon stepped underneath the woman's hand which slid across its coat and deftly plucked a single hair from the creature's back. Silent as stone, the Jolteon backed away from Carla as she lifted the hair to her face and inhaled deeply.
"Ahhh, so much power. You know, I could make you the most fearsome creature on the face of this planet if you allowed me." The Jolteon fiercely shook its head. Carla sighed and shook her own. "What the gods gave you in power they took in ambition. Very well, let's move along then." Humming tunelessly to herself, Carla began to skip around the room, hands clapping to her own rhythm. As she continued dancing, black energy emitted from the footfalls of her strange minuet, slowly gathering into a pulsating ball that floated ominously above her cauldron. As the ball grew, Carla's movements slowed until she finally came to a stop in her ritual and grazed her hand along the rim of the cauldron. Grabbing a gleaming knife from the table, Carla gently cut a small portion of the hair she had taken. She then grabbed the dissected piece and thrust her hand inside the floating black orb. As she withdrew her hand the orb began to pulsate with a sickly green energy.
A yelp came from the Jolteon as it collapsed to the floor. As it whimpered on the ground the Jolteon's coat changed from bright green to a dull silver. In contrast the dark ball turned the same shade of green that had once covered the prone Jolteon. Silently, Carla placed a hand atop the ball of energy, slowly forcing it down into the cauldron. As the orb sank into the cauldron a light screamed forth and a wind from nowhere tore across the room. Carla remained unphased, focused solely on maintaining the orb's descent. Finally, the top of the orb sank into the cauldron's inky depths, the light dissipated and the air settled, a moment of silence passed.
The Jolteon slowly stood and studied the silver fur that now covered its body. Carla approached the pokemon and brushed a gentle hand down its back.
"I believe you have some business to attend to." Without a second thought the Jolteon dashed out of the enchantress' home leaving her to enjoy the mayhem she had created, alone.
I made it to the halfway point of our jog just as Sammy was finished her mid-run stretches. She threw some serious side-eye my way as I stumbled up to her trying to slow down from my sprint, I hadn't realized how fast my run was getting.
"It's about time. What happened to you?" I wanted to tell her about the necklace, but it somehow didn't feel right. So, I lied.
"Sorry, I got forgot to give you these earlier." I held out the box of earrings. Confusion clouded Sammy's face.
"What's that?"
"Well, what's the point of a surprise if I tell you?" She rolled her eyes and grabbed the box from my hand. Opening it, her mouth opened in slight shock.
"Andrew, these are beautiful. Where did you get them?"
"Oh, I got them at the street fair a couple of weeks ago, just never found a good time to give them to you." She handed the box back for me to stow away in my shorts pocket until she could wear them later.
"That's sweet of you, but I also know you can't hold a secret that long to save your life. Where did they actually come from?" She cocked an eyebrow and tilted her head at me. Rather than answer, I simply grinned, turned tail, and ran.
"Whoa whoa whoa! Hold up there, Blitzle! We're not done talking!" I slowed down just enough to turn around and yell back at her.
"Then you better hurry up, Slowking!" The glare of rage was enough for me to turn back around and run for my life.
