^John Galsworthy ]-:
The sun peeks through a hazy screen of clouds, painting the sky an elaborate mix of vibrant reds and oranges that intertwine with the smoky grays. Below the mist-laden woods slowly come alive with layers of sounds echoing in the morning air, the drone of insects humming starts the usual routine of awaking dawn. Webs are string with delicate drops of morning dew, glistening in the first shards of sunlight.
Tromping through the natural avenue of trees is two men. Both in their twenties, loaded down with backpacks and shotguns.
"We're going the wrong way, Nate," said one of the men as he studies the GPS on his new Nokia N95 smartphone.
"Who cares?" responds the other man, Nate. "Just enjoy the scenery, Tim."
Tim slaps a mosquito and mumbles, "And the West Nile virus." a tiny snick- a twig snapping- sounds and Tim stops. "Did you hear that?"
Nate stops and listens for a second. He then turns to Tim, "If I knew you were such a wuss, I'd have brought my gran-" Nate is cut off by a rustling sound.
Soon more rustling sounds in every direction, from behind- in front- the sides. It's either more than one creature or it's moving with extraordinary speed. Terrified, the men turn away from each other and search the trees.
"What the hell is that?!" Tim yells.
"I don't know!" Nate responds.
From an unknown perspective the trees are whipping past at a dizzying speed. The branches are dodged with preternatural agility. It's exhilarating. Terrifying.
The rustling soon stops, and an eerie silence follows...
"Think it's gone?" Tim asks.
Nate doesn't respond.
"Nate?" Tim turns, only to find his friend gone. "Nate!?"
Nothing… then the rustling starts up again, and intensifies.
So gimme all your poison
And gimme all your pills
And gimme all your hopeless hearts and make me ill
You're running after something that you'll never kill
If this is what you want
Then fire at will!
The music playing from hidden speakers is all that can be heard throughout the empty arcade, along with sound effects of the consoles.
Though one is making more noise as it's being played by a young girl teen. She is wearing a simple T-shirt with, a hoodie tied around her waist, jeans, and sneakers. She quickly pushes a lock of her long dirty blonde hair behind her ear and continues to play. Her liquid amethyst eyes are glued to the screen as she slams the buttons aggressively. There's finally an opening and quickly she teleports behind her opponent.
Suddenly there's a draft and as the girl's throat flares up she yanks on the joystick so hard it breaks off.
During the lapse the girl's opponent turns and lands a punch. She groans as her fighter, Scorpion, stands dazed while his attacker commences with his finishing move. He whips out a mallet and pounds her fighter into the ground like a nail. Once Scorpion is down to his shoulders, he delivers a side swing and chunks of skull and brain matter splatter everywhere.
"SHAO KAHN WINS!" the speakers blare. "FATALITY!"
"Ace!" a voice says.
The girl, Ace, looks around the game and sees a boy approaching her.
"Bambi," Ace says. "You threw me off!"
"I have been looking all over town for you!" he huffs.
Despite just turning fourteen, Bambi's face has a delicate preadolescent androgyny, making him look innocent and fragile. His light brown hair is a cluster of short curls that compliment his brown eyes, which are as vulnerable and as sweet as a doe's. Though his most prominent feature is his scars; from hairline to chin do three thick, red lines- vivid in color though long healed- claim half his face. One line pulls down the corner of his left eye, and another twists the left side of his mouth into a permanent grimace.
"Come on we're going to be late!" Bambi says.
Ace furrows her brows a bit. "Where we going?"
"Uh school. Where else?" Bambi's eyes then narrow and he points at the blonde. "The heck? You go on a killing spree or something?"
Ace looks down at her shirt, the front having a few noticeable red stains, then back to her best friend. "I had a bite earlier. And I thought we were cutting today."
"Why on earth would you think that?"
Ace shrugs her shoulders. "Just figured since it's the last day before Spring Break and we're not gonna be in school for most of the day anyway."
"You know I'm usually for it, but I have to take notes for history or else I'll flunk this quarter."
"Just like a nerd to want to go to school on his birthday."
"I am not a nerd! And even if I wanted to I- we can't anyway. We already have two strikes."
"And," Ace simply says.
"And, my dad said if I bring home one more D I can kiss my games and tv goodbye."
Ace groans, then checks her phone for the time. "It'll take two hours for us to get there on your bike. Wait a minute- - how did you get here so fast?"
"Justin. Now come on he has the engine running!"
Ace sighs. "Alright, birthday nerd."
As the two make their way out Ace removes her hoodie from around her waist and slips it on.
Outside a grumbling red truck waits and the driver is an elderly well-fit man with a buzzcut, Justin. During the ride Bambi decides to ask him questions about his time in the army during World War 2 for an extra credit essay. Ace also takes interest in the lecture, help take her mind off her thirst.
Ace and Bambi have been best friends for a few years, going back to the fifth grade. Every inhale she takes around him is like a fistful of flames punching down her throat. Literally no one else's blood can ever compare to his. In a way that is a good thing, in fact it's actually the reason why Ace has better control of her thirst.
After over thirty minutes Justin pulls his truck to a stop at an intersection.
"Thank again Justin!" Bambi says as he quickly gets out.
"No problem." Justin says. "Stay out of trouble."
"No promises," Ace quips as she shuts the door.
After Bambi retrieves his bike from the back Justin drives off. The two friends then walk in comfortable silence for the next few minutes to their destination, Midsun Junior High. Ace patiently waits for Bambi to lock up his bike, and they enter the building.
Inside the monotone buzz of several-hundred voices hum like an orchestra of deadbeat droids. The halls are crowded with people, the chaos is so perfect it's like a movie. There's the couple that's always making out on the left side of the hall. About ten feet farther down is the cliquey girls, opposite them is the cliquey jocks. There's the parade of band geeks with their instrument cases, and the aerospace tech kids who never do anything but make paper airplanes.
Ace and Bambi are their own little clique, which is well known as-
"Hey, freaks!" says an all too familiar voice from behind.
And it begins, Ace thinks to herself in annoyance.
The two keep walking, but three other boys begin to follow closely behind them.
"I said hey freaks," the voice says again. It belongs to a boy wearing his backpack by one strap that introduces him as Keith.
"Or is it actually Beauty and the Beast," another boy says. The water bottle he drinks from introduces him as Daniel.
"More like Lady and the Tramp," says the last boy.
"Oh nice one, Mike!" Daniel says as he playfully nudges him.
"But which one is which?" Keith quips.
The three burst out laughing.
Stay calm- stay calm…. Ace reminds herself when she feels her rage begin to grow in the pit of her stomach, expanding and filling her with heat.
Keith goes around and stands in their way, making them stop.
"Well obviously you'd be the Lady," he says to Bambi.
"Then wait," Mike says with sarcastic amusement. "Wouldn't that make the Tramp a lesbo?"
"Yeah," Daniel says. "I mean lesbi-honest it runs in the family."
"Speaking of running and family," Keith says. "I heard from my dad that your old man met up with your mom last week."
Ace's hands clench into tight fists at her side. Calm! Calm! Calm!
"And that he whined like a little bitch when she didn't want to come back," Keith goes on. "Because she couldn't stand to look at your fucked up face."
That's it! Ace moves towards the bully but Bambi quickly grabs her arm to hold her back.
Daniel and Mike let out a "ooohh" in unison behind us.
"What Tramp?" Keith taunts. "Wanna start something?"
Ace's eyes are like daggers and her teeth are clenched so tightly they can pulverize granite. As Keith looks back at her with an annoying smirk the rage- the fire in her stomach's core- intensifies. Her throat begins to itch- but not from thirst, no it is because of the smoke now filling it.
"Ace come on," Bambi says after a moment, gently tugging on her arm. "They're not worth it."
"Yeah you best listen to your girlfriend, lesbo." Daniel says.
Bambi tugs on his friend's arm again, this time she let him guide her around the jerk.
Ace inhales deeply, pushing the smoke back into her lungs, and holding her breath as they make their way to their lockers. Not only are they right next to each other but also right across from the bathrooms. Luckily the girl's bathroom is empty when Ace enters, rushing to the handicap stall. Her lungs are demanding air but she calmly works on getting rid of the smoke that fills them. She brings her hands to either side of her mouth and moves them in a small circular motion as she slowly exhales, as the smoke comes out it becomes a compressed grey ball of air between her palms.
When it is all out she goes into a coughing fit for a long moment. After she tosses the small sphere of smoke up towards the air vent. Quickly thrusting her hand up towards it, creating a blast of wind to push it further in.
After splashing her face and checking her reflection Ace makes her way back out.
"You good?" Bambi asks when his friend steps out of the bathroom.
"Yeah," Ace mutters.
The bell then rings and the two go off to class.
The day goes by in a blur.
As Ace had said before the two aren't in school most of the day since their history class is taking a field trip to the museum. Bambi practically writes down every single word the teacher says during the trip and in the end the two return just in time for lunch. Ace and Bambi have always had every class together for the past three years, well except one this year which is last period.
At the indoor pool it is pre-class chaos; kids in bathing suits scream, splash, and push each other into the water.
"Mr. Aguado," Bambi says meekly.
The P. E. teacher turns and sees him still fully dressed. "C'mon, seriously again?"
"I have a cold," Bambi says as he holds out a note.
It reads: Please excuse my son from swimming, he has a cold. -Mr. Notch.
The elegant writing may look authentic but no doubt it is forged. Mr. Aguado looks at the boy for a long moment, and takes pity on him. "Okay. Go sit in the bleachers."
Bambi does just that and when he is settled he looks out at the pool.
In the water Keith and his two cohorts circle a girl with very developed breasts. The boys keep disappearing underwater and grabbing her, she backs away and shriek-laughs uncomfortably. Keith appears behind her and undoes the strap of her bikini with a tug. She quickly grabs it before it can fall and screams at the top of her lungs for Mr. Aguado.
The P. E. teacher turns and sees Keith laughing hysterically. "Okay, Keith! Ten laps! Now!"
"I didn't do anything!" Keith complains.
"Now! Or I make it twenty!" Mr. Aguado says sternly.
Keith pounds the water with his fist, and as Mr. Aguado turns away the girl socks him hard in the arm.
Bambi can't help but smile. But it's bad timing, for just at that moment Keith feels his gaze and turns. Bambi abruptly stops smiling and averts his eyes, but he can still feel Keith's glare.
When class ends Bambi quickly rushes to the locker room, spinning the tumbler on his as fast as he can. Once it pops open he wastes no time grabbing his backpack.
"Hey little girl,"
Bambi turns and sees the three bullies surrounding him, still dripping in their suits.
Keith is twirling a wet towel into a whip, and snaps it at the scarred boy's face.
Bambi recoils in pain. "Ow! Don't!"
"Are you a little girl?" Keith asks before viciously snapping the towel again.
Bambi bends over, covering his face, trying to protect himself.
"That's why he won't go swimming," Keith says as he moves closer. "He doesn't want everyone to see what a little fucking bitch he is."
Desperate, Bambi tries to make a break for it. But one of the bullies grabs him and wrestles him to the ground. He starts to scream but Keith covers his mouth.
Keith giggles sadistically as his prey gasps for air and flails in panic. "Hold him down! Get his arms! Get his arms!"
Daniel and Mike do as their told.
Keith then reaches under the waistband of Bambi's pants, seizing his underwear and yanks it upward. As he slowly stretches it into a brutal wedgie Bambi squirms frantically.
"Dude, shit!" Daniel says repulsed as he backs up. "I think he pissed himself!"
The other two look at the ground by Bambi's legs, when they see a noticeable yellow puddle they scramble up.
"Oh shit!" Keith laughs uncontrollably.
"Damn- fucking freak!" Mike says as he kicks Bambi in the side.
Bambi just lies there as the three head off, Keith's laughter echoing. A few classmates stare down at him, askance as they change at their lockers. Bambi gets up slowly and picks his backpack off the ground.
