Chapter 2- Unexpected Dinner Guests

^_^Kagome's P.O.V^_^

The morning after the party Sango, Ayame and I were sitting downstairs in the sitting room. Sango was lounging on the couch and playing on her phone, Ayame was putting her hair up in pigtails, and I was sitting in the loveseat, on my laptop, looking for the song that I danced to last night with Inuyasha.

"I found it!" I said once it started playing.

"Found what?" Ayame asked, looking at me though the mirror.

"The song that Inuyasha and I danced to last night." I had already started downloading it so that I could put it on a playlist to listen to later.

"I guess you and Inuyasha could say that it's your song now, huh?" Sango teased and sat up to look at me.

"What are you talking about? You know that I like this kind of music."

"You do, but you like Inuyasha too." Ayame said.

"You guys are such children." I shook my head at them and stood up.

"We know we are, but what are you?" Ayame sang and turned around to stick her tongue out at me and then laughed. Sango laughed too.

"I'm leaving. I'll be outside if you need me." I went out the back door and to the gazebo, my favorite spot in our garden. I had only been sitting there for about five minutes or so, and I was so absorbed in what I was doing on my laptop that I didn't see Kikyo standing in front of me until she cleared her throat.

"Sorry Kikyo, what's up?" I asked and I closed my laptop.

"Mother wanted me to let you know that we'll be having guests over for dinner at six. I already told Sango and Ayame." She said.

"Do you know who's coming?"

She walked away without answering me.

"What's her problem? She's acting ruder than usual." I said to myself aloud. The time on my phone read 4 o'clock so I went back inside to get ready.

When I got upstairs, I went straight to Sango's room and knocked on her door. She opened it with a towel around her body and her hair was dripping.

"What's up?" She asked.

"Are we doing our color thing tonight?"

"Ayame wants to. Says she wants to impress whoever is coming over with 'the Higurashi daughters and their wonder taste in clothing'."

"What the hell is Aya on? There's nothing impressive about it. It's just something that we've been doing since we were thirteen." Three years ago, our parents threw Kikyo this big party for her birthday and Sango, Ayame and I decided to dress up in colors that went together. I wore a red dress, Ayame wore a white one and Sango's was black. We had such a good time and got so many compliments that it became a thing that we did on occasion.

"You'll have to ask her. What are you wearing?"

"No idea, help me?"

Sango and I walked over to my room and into my closet. She tapped her finger on her chin for a moment before she reached for a blue sundress.

"Wear those flats with it and it'll be really cute." She grabbed a pair of black flats and walked out of my closet to put everything on my bed.

"Good choice, what are you two wearing?" I asked and picked up some stuff I was going to need for a shower.

"I don't know about clothes, but I was thinking that I could wear grey and that Ayame could wear yellow."

"You should wear that grey maxi dress you got the other day."

"The one with the slit?"

"No, the one with the belt around the waist."

Sango's lips made an 'oh' shape before she ran out of my room, she was most likely trying to figure out where she put the dress after she tried it on. I shook my head at her with a smile on my face and went into my bathroom to take a shower.

"For the record, I'm not on anything. I just wanted to dazzle our guests with how good we're going to look." Ayame said from my bed, where she was flipping through a magazine in a yellow dress and white open toed heels. She decided to wear her hair was down and slightly curled.

"I forget how advanced your hearing is because you only use it when you want to." I said and winced at Sango. She was French braiding my hair.

"Sorry," She said and paused for a moment before continuing. "I wonder who's coming?"

"Kikyo didn't tell me when I asked."

"I hope it's someone with a hot son." Ayame said.

"You always want it to be someone with a hot son." Sango said.

"And in the end, it's usually some old guy and his wife." I said.

"I get the feeling that this time will be different." Ayame said. There was a hint of laughter in her voice.

"Different how?" Sango asked. Her voice too, what did they know?

"Even if it isn't someone that I can hook up with, I think that it'll be just as exciting."

She wasn't wrong. They knew just who would be walking through those doors tonight, and they didn't tell me because they're evil and–

"Smile, Kagie. You don't want to get wrinkles on your pretty face, do you?" Ayame leaned over to whisper to me as we stood downstairs and watched as our parents greated the guests. She thought that this was hilarious, and so did Sango.

"Why didn't you guys tell me?" I whispered back.

"We didn't want to ruin the surprise Kags." This time they chuckled and tried to pull themselves together afterwards because our guests were done saying hello to our parents and were coming over to where the three of us were standing with Kikyo.

"Good evening, King Inutaisho and Queen Izayoi," Kikyo said and curtsied in a black dress that almost looked like the one that I had on last night. We followed her lead and then she addressed the rest of our guests. "Good evening, Prince Sesshomaru, Lady Rin, and Prince Inuyasha."

That's right. Inuyasha. He's the reason Sango and Ayame were laughing.

"Good evening." Prince Sesshomaru said and bowed. He seemed… bored.

"Hello, and good evening." Lady Rin said. I didn't know much about her, except that she came from a family that was close to the Takahashi's and that she is currently engaged to Sesshomaru.

"It's nice to see you all again. And thank you for coming to my party last night." Inuyasha said, looking right at me.

"It was a pleasure, I had a lot of fun." Kikyo said and smiled at him. I glanced at Ayame and she nodded, confirming my suspicions. Ayame could smell the pheromones that people put out when they were attracted to someone, and she could definitely smell them on Kikyo.

"Shall we?" My mother asked and lead everyone to the dining room. Somehow, I ended up sitting right in between Inuyasha and Kikyo, with Sango right across from me, Ayame was to Sango's right and Sesshomaru and Rin to her left. My parents sat at one end of the table and Inuyasha's parents sat at the other.

"Tell us, how has everything been?" Queen Izayoi said to my parents.

"Things have been wonderful…" At that point I zoned out. My parents had dinner parties like this a lot and they were always so boring. The only way I could keep myself from falling asleep until the food came was by making little faces at Sango and Ayame to make them laugh. They knew it would've been rude to laugh aloud at a time like this, and that's just what I wanted. Payback for not telling me that Inuyasha was going to be coming over.

At first, they tried not to look at me when I started making faces at them, but they couldn't resist for long. I was so close to cracking Ayame, but someone said something to me and threw me off.

"What are you doing?" Inuyasha asked.

"I'm trying to make Sango and Ayame laugh." I said without looking over at him.

"Why?"

"Because I want to embarrass them."

"That's not how you should do it."

I looked over at him then. He was on my left and in a dark grey suit with a white button up underneath and a solid black tie. Maybe I should've worn grey, we would've matched. Wait, why do I care about matching with him?

"What should I do then?" I asked.

"You should do something that they'll have no choice but to laugh at."

"And just what– "

I didn't get to finish my question because Inuyasha sneezed so loud and so abnormally that the entire room went silent.

"Bless you?" Lady Rin said and tried to hide her smile behind her hand.

"Thanks, I don't know where that came from," Inuyasha said and looked around like everyone else had just done something weird. "Why are you all staring at me? Do I have something in my hair?" He pulled several strands of his hair up to his face to inspect it. That got them! Sango and Ayame burst with laughter. I joined in afterwards and so did Inuyasha, along with Rin.

"Inu-poo, you shouldn't make such a fuss at dinner." Queen Izayoi said with a few giggles.

"Inu-poo? I can't take it!" Sango said and held her stomach as she laughed harder.

"Clam down Sango," My dad said and shook his head at her.

"Mom, you said that you would stop calling me that." Inuyasha said. Sounded like he was whining, how cute.

"I'm sorry honey, it's an old habit. You always used to do that when you were bored at dinners like these." Queen Izayoi said with a smile.

"Our son Sota used to hum and got the girls to clap along when he got bored." My mom said and laughed at the memory.

"Sota? He's your oldest, isn't he?" King Inutaisho asked.

"That's right, he left home some time ago to think about what he wanted to do with his life."

"What about the kingdom? The oldest is supposed to be the one that gets the crown when they're old enough." Queen Izayoi said.

"Sota didn't want the crown. He wanted to see the world and decide on a future on his own. He didn't want a life that was already decided for him, he wanted the choice to be his." I said. It was one of the things that I admired most about my older brother. He knew that asking for something like that would upset our parents because they had such high hopes for him to succeed them, but he still did it and he didn't quit asking until they let him go.

"I see, I'm glad he's doing something that he enjoys."

"We are too." My dad said and smiled at my mom.

After dinner, the adults (including Kikyo, Sesshomaru and Rin) went to sit in the parlor while Sango, Ayame and I excused ourselves to show Inuyasha around.

"I tried so hard not to laugh at you," Ayame said as the four of us walked around the garden. "But once Inuyasha sneezed like that I knew I was done for."

"I was fine until he went cross-eyed to look at his hair." Sango said.

"Kagome wanted to make you laugh and that was the only thing I could think of." Inuyasha said.

"Good thinking, it worked." I said and high fived him. We stared at each other for a moment, and after we snapped out of it we noticed that Sango and Ayame were walking away from us and towards our "house". Calling it a castle was a mouthful.

"Where are guys you going?" I called to them.

They didn't answer and went inside, leaving me alone with Inuyasha.

"So, Kagome," Inuyasha started.

"So, Inuyasha," I said.

"I had a good time last night."

"I did too. I really enjoyed dancing with you," I started walking towards the gazebo and he followed. "I even looked for the song we danced to earlier today."

"Did you find it?"

"Yes, it's called My Last Breath." I took a seat when we got there and was happy that he sat closer to me than he had to.

"What else did you do today?" He asked.

"Not much, I sat in the living room with Sango and Ayame for a while and got teased."

"Why did they tease you?"

Why did I tell him that? I can't tell him what they said.

"Come on, it can't be that bad." He said and leaned a little closer to me.

"Well… the thing is…" I started.

"The thing is…"

"Theykeptcallingthesongwedancedtooursong."

He laughed. "Come again?"

I sighed. "They called the song we danced to our song and they wouldn't stop teasing me after I found it."

"But it is our song." He said and wiggled his brows.

"Not you too!" I groaned.

He laughed again, but then stopped abruptly. Kikyo walked up to us and nodded her head towards our house.

"Our parents want me to tutor you before you leave." She said to Inuyasha.

"I don't need you to." He said.

"You may not need it, but that's what they want and I can't tell them no."

Inuyasha pressed his fingers into his temples and sighed before he stood up. "You mind waiting inside for us?" He asked Kikyo.

"Not at all, but please be quick. I'd like to hurry up and get started." She walked away, leaving us alone again.

"We didn't get to talk for very long." I said, I stood as well so we could walk back.

"No, we didn't," We walked in silence for a while and then he paused. "Can I ask you something? About your sister?"

"You can, what do you want to know?"

"Hurry up! The sooner you get tutored, the sooner you get to go home!" Rin called from the door.

He sighed again and walked faster to get inside, without asking me whatever it was he wanted to know about Kikyo.

Inuyasha pulled Rin off to the side the moment we were back inside.

"Did they really ask you to tutor him?" I asked Kikyo.

"Yes, they did," She turned her head to look at me and tapped a finger to her chin as if in thought. "You know I just remembered something."

"What's that?"

"Prince Inuyasha kept looking my way last night. I thought it was cute and wanted to tease him a bit so I walked out the front door, but when I walked back in he was coming in from the back with you."

"Where are you going with this?"

"I was just thinking that maybe he wanted to dance with me, but settled for you because you were just sitting out there all alone, and because we look alike."

That couldn't have been true, right? That would mean that he wanted to be with her, but went with me instead as some kind of substitute.

"I can ask him while I'm tutoring him." She said.

"No, that's okay, please don't." I shook my head. It would be so embarrassing.

"It's not a problem, really I insist."

"Kikyo…" Inuyasha and Rin were done talking and he started walking towards us before I could convince Kikyo to keep quiet.

"Are you ready? We'll be going upstairs to the library." She said when he stopped in front of us.

"Yeah, let's get this over with." He said and gestured for her to start walking. She winked at me before she left. Inuyasha put a hand on my arm and squeezed it and then followed her.

How the hell was I going to stop her from embarrassing me?

"You okay Kags? You look pale." Sango asked when she found me pacing in my room.

"No, I'm not. I'm not okay." I said and looked at her.

"What's wrong?" She rushed over to me and grabbed my arms to stop me from pacing.

"Kikyo… she said that she was going to ask Inuyasha if he only danced with me last night because he couldn't find her, and because we look alike."

"What are you talking about?"

I explained everything that happened after she and Ayame left me with Inuyasha, and when I finished she looked as confused as I felt.

"That doesn't make any sense." She shook her head.

"Doesn't it? I mean think about it, Kikyo looked really pissed last night when she saw us dancing and he did seem a little too into me. Maybe he was imagining himself with her the entire time."

"Well, what about tonight?"

"Before we came in he wanted to know something about Kikyo. What if he was going to ask me if she's single?"

"If that was the case he would've just asked her."

"I don't know…"

She took my hand and walked us out of the room without another word.

"Wait, where are we going?" I asked.

"We're going to find Aya, she'll listen in and tell us what they're saying." She said and pulled me downstairs.

"Sango! We can't eavesdrop!"

We found Ayame coming out of the kitchen with a bottle of water and Sango grabbed her hand before she even realized we were there.

"Whoa! Slow down Sango. The water is spilling everywhere!" She said.

"I'll explain in a second, but I need you to do something for me." Sango said and dragged us all upstairs.

"Could you explain now?"

We went into my room and she shut the door before she told Ayame everything. Ayame didn't believe Kikyo and happily agreed to listen in.

"I can't do it from down here though, we have to go upstairs to where the library is and I'll be able to listen from the game room."

The second floor of the castle held all of our bedrooms and empty rooms for guests. The library was on the third floor, along with our game room, a training room, an entertainment room, my father's study, and a few other rooms that aren't important. The three of us walked into the game room as quietly as we could and Ayame sat down on the pool table to focus her hearing.

"Guys… I don't know about this…" I whispered.

"Shh!" Sango said.

"Can't Inuyasha hear us too?" I asked.

"Most demons don't stretch out their hearing unless they have to. You're considered paranoid and rude if you do it all the time." Ayame said.

I guess there was no way out of this, but I really didn't want to know if he was only interested in me because I looked like my sister. I would feel like such a fool.

"He just said, 'I don't want to hear it, I think it's time for me to leave.' And Kikyo is saying, 'We can make it work, just listen to me.'" Ayame said.

"What does that mean?" Sango asked.

"I don't know, but I… wait he's walking out of the room now."

We peeked out of the door and saw Inuyasha storming off and Kikyo chasing after him. Once Inuyasha made it to the stairs and started walking down I went over to Kikyo and grabbed her arm.

"What was that all about?" I asked.

She gave me a sad look and took my hand off her arm. "I wish you hadn't seen that. I… I was right. I'm so sorry Kagome. He said that it was me he wanted and that he's been trying to find a way to talk to me, but hasn't been able to do it. He stormed off just now because I said that I wasn't happy about him using you like that. I also said that he should apologize to you and after that we could talk about our future, but I guess he took it the wrong way. I have to fix this, but hey, now you know, right?"

She left me in the hall after that and Sango and Ayame were by my side in seconds. They didn't say a word, they just hugged me and I more than appreciated it because it was what I needed at that moment.

Our parents called for us to say goodnight to the Takahashi's and I had to put on the fakest smile ever, even though all I wanted to do was go in my room and forget everything that had happened.

"Goodnight everyone, I had a wonder night. Visit us some time, Nisuki." Queen Izayoi said and hugged my mother.

"I'll have to make that happen." My mom said and hugged her back.

I could tell that Inuyasha was looking in my direction, but I kept my eyes on the floor. Kikyo was standing right beside me so he must've been looking at her and I didn't want to see that. I was relieved when they started walking out, but I didn't make it more than a few steps away before I heard him call me.

"May I have a word with you, Princess Kagome?" I couldn't say no when everyone was watching.

"Certainly," We walked away from everyone and I didn't look his way once.

"What's wrong? You seem different." He said.

"I really don't think you care, or that you ever did." I said, facing him with my arms crossed.

"What do you mean? I do care–"

I rolled my eyes and cut him off. "Look, just save it. I know the truth and I really don't want to hear anymore lies."

"If you know the truth then shouldn't you be happy?"

How stupid was he? "You think I'm happy about being someone's substitute until they get the real thing? I don't think so. Do me a favor and forget everything. Forget about yesterday, forget about today, and most importantly, forget about me the same way I'm going to forget all of that and you." I walked away and upstairs to my room.

^_^Normal P.O.V^_^

Inuyasha had no idea what was going on, but he intended to find out. He was about to walk out of the front door, but caught a glimpse of two girls standing in the sitting room and walked up to them instead. He recognized them as Kagome's sisters, but he had no clue who was who. He probably should've known, but the only thing on his mind was Kagome. He'd worry about learning which sister was which later.

"What's wrong with Kagome?" He asked, getting straight to the point.

The girls looked at him and one of them walked out of the room.

"You handle this Sango, I'm gonna check on Kagie." She said as she left.

"You're just going to leave me here with the asshole?" Sango asked.

"Excuse me?" Inuyasha asked with a raised brow.

"You heard me."

He rubbed his temples with his fingers for the second time that night. "I'm going to ignore that. Will you tell me what's wrong with Kagome?"

She took a step closer to him. "You're kidding, right? She's knows everything, and now you need to leave her alone."

"That's the thing, whatever truth she thinks she knows is clearly wrong."

"Yeah, okay. It's time for you to go." She left him standing alone in the room with an annoyed look on his face. They weren't letting him explain anything and he had no idea what to do about it.

Turns out that I didn't put a quiz in this chapter. Oh well.
