Chapter 2: The Great Descent

Disclaimer: I do not own Dying Light

For a while Crane had just stood there, in shock at this revelation. Then he began to panic, sweat began to pool on his forehead and his stress becoming worse as he imagined terrible scenarios.

'What if he destroyed the research? What if this was all a decoy and Rais had someone else give the research to the GRE?', then Crane suddenly grew hopeful,'What if he still had the research on him?'

Thinking back on it, Crane found that it was definitely possible. Rais's coat remained on him throughout the fight, and he might have had a hidden pocket in the back. 'I never actually did see his back during the fight..' Crane realized, 'The case also seems strong enough to have survived a fall like this.'

But all this thinking led Crane to another realization, he had no way to get down there safely and quickly. He might be able to find an elevator down, but with the amount of zombies in the tower it would be hard to actually find or get into one. Panic once again surged through his body as he realized he might not actually be able to get down. A whole floor of the building had been booby trapped, and its possible other floors were too. He couldn't even go to the other building he came across from, since the crane had been destroyed by Rais!

Crane began wandering around the rooftop thinking, but trying not to panic. 'Is there really no way down here? Maybe I could use my grappling hook somehow...' But that train of thought was cut off as he saw something that he didn't notice before. It was an airdrop case, marked with Rais symbol. Curious, Crane walked over to the case and flipped it open, inside, there was a foam case in the shape of a rocket launcher. 'So that's how he got a rocket launcher up here, he must have had some of his men lift it up.' Realizing that this had just wasted more of his time, Crane was about to go off and see if he could find a way down, when he suddenly stopped and looked back at the case. Normally, he would have just left it behind, but now he felt like he had to check the case again.

Worried about the time, Crane went straight to the one spot he did not check in the case, the area underneath the foam. What he saw surprised him, but after thinking about it, he shouldn't have been surprised. It was a parachute, most likely the one that the crate had come down with. Even junk was useful during this time so it wasn't surprising that the parachute had been kept, Crane himself had gone through much trouble because counterfeiters found use in trashed antizin bottles. Of course that didn't matter much right now, what mattered now was that he found a way down.

Crane smiled, all he had to do now was make a few minor adjustments to the parachute and he could get to the bottom.

At the Tower

Brecken was worried.

It was only an hour until sundown, and Crane was still not back. He learned from Troy that he was currently confronting Rais and trying to recover Zere's research, and he hoped to God that Crane didn't die. If the city lost that research, then Harran was doomed. That research was their lifeline, their chance to get a cure, their shield against another bombing threat, and their only hope of survival.

But Brecken was also worrying about what Crane's death could do to the Tower. They had already lost too many people, and he didn't want to know how the morale of the Tower would be affected if they lost their greatest runner.

Mulling it over, Brecken came to a decision, he needed to send somebody out to make sure that he was safe.

"Hey I need a volunteer! Somebody needs to go and help Crane get back, its getting dark!" Brecken didn't think that anybody would volunteer though, and was almost about to just go and do it himself when he heard... "I'll go!"

Turning his head towards the source, Brecken smiled. He was the perfect man for the job, and he knew Crane well. Satisfied, the Tower's leader turned around and headed back to HQ, although Crane was important, he had other work that needed to be finished.

Rais's Tower, Ground Level

The trip down had been relatively peaceful and fast. There was an incident where a toad had tried to spit some of his acid at him, but it had just barely missed the parachute and he had been able to take it out with a few shots from his pistol. Those shots had led to the somewhat amusing event of seeing tons of zombies falling off the building in their attempt to get to him, but after the toad he faced no other threats.

Crane's thoughts slowed as he approached the ground, landing onto a pile of, you guessed it, trashbags. 'Now that I'm on the ground though...' Crane noted the many zombies approaching him, 'I won't be so untouchable.'

The first of the zombies began approaching, lunging towards the American with hands and heads aimed towards him. Of course, none of them stood a chance. Crane's first strike cut clean through the torsos of two zombies, and sheared through the arm and head of another. Hearing the charge of another zombie, Crane easily sidestepped the zombie coming from behind him and watched as it clumsily crashed right into another zombie. The last zombie swung his arm towards him, but before it even touched him it was cut in two, and in the next instant the zombie's body suffered the same fate, having been cut in two by Crane's blade. Crane finished off by killing the last two zombies that were still entangled on the floor, and began to move on.

'Now to find Rais's body, and hopefully the research.' Crane thought to himself,' And there it is!' The Hero of Harran began running towards the warlord's corpse, killing the few zombies that were on it before they even noticed he was there. 'Thank God not that many zombies got to it yet, I don't even want to think about what could have happened to the research if a horde or some volatiles got to the corpse!'

'Now about that research...' Crane turned over Rais's body, finding an exact copy of the container he found on top of the his Tower, except this one was actually holding the research! 'Great! Now to get back to Brecken!'

Those plans were immediately broken by the inhuman howling and shrieking that Crane heard.

THE NIGHT HAS COME

AND THE MONSTERS HAVE COME OUT TO HUNT

AN: Wooh! Finally got that out! Sorry about taking forever, but I have been busy as fuck recently. AP classes and orchestra have been really eating into my time, as well as looking for a college to go to and also finding good scholarships. Anyway I'm glad that you guys haven't unfaved/unfollowed this, I promise that I will try to keep this updated more frequently, at least once every two weeks, I'm not going to have a 2 month break unless I have good reason.

Anyway, for this story I plan to involve some side characters and characters from the side quests a bit. The antizin counterfeiters I mentioned above come from the quest Goodnight Mr. Bahir.

Also, thanks for the review Catalyst, but Ishaq and his prophecy are actually canon content, he stars in two side quests 'Do You Believe?' and 'The Shadow of the King'. The latter is my favorite side quest and what I named my first chapter off of, in order to better reflect his prophecy. Ishaq will continue to play an important role in this fanfic, especially in the events to come.

Anyway I have a question for you guys. Should I mark parts in the story where side content/characters are mentioned, or should I just talk about them in the AN like I am right now?

Btw I have also made a minor change to chapter 1, changing where Rais calls Crane dirt to Rais calling Crane a slave, it makes more sense to me this way and matches his view on Crane through the story better.

Anyway, that's it for now! Please review, fav, and follow!
