Okay, the excitement begins! Enjoy! I have 12 views on the first chapter! yay
We stared at the horizon for a minute. I wondered where I'd go next.
"Eevee, with you by my side, I can finally go on my Pokemon journey. It's been my dream for years. The truth is my biggest dream has been to become a Pokemon Trainer. With you, it's already been accomplished." He gave me a smile, making my heart sink and my ears lower. I'd planned to escape into the wild once I'd been freed. I hadn't expected to have to follow this kid around on his adventure. Clearly, he had assumed I'd be willing to come with him.
Unaware of my internal struggle, Sam pressed on. "That's not saying I'm done yet, I want to explore the entire world. I want to defeat strong trainers from all over. But…well, what I mean to say is, Eevee," he turned his brown-green eyes to look at me, "you and me, we're going to be the best of friends."
I twitched my nose at him in surprise. Friends? He had just met me, where was this confidence coming from? I vocalized my protest when Sam smiled, scooped me up in his arms, and stood. This was my chance, my only chance. This was my crossroads. That was then that I realized I had already made up my mind-to be free. I gestured to the ground and wriggled in his arms.
The boy nodded and set me down uncertainly. I walked a few steps away from him, then stopped, turning back. "Ee."
"Oh, you just want to walk?" Sam smiled relieved. I trotted back to him impatiently as he adjusted the straps of his backpack and started to walk. I guess I was in this for the long run. But if his dream could really be achieved, traveling the world would be complete freedom.
Soon we were at the entrance, or rather the exit, of Pallet town. The boy standing near the path turned around to face us.
"Sam, I've told you a hundred times before. No Pokemon, no exit." I snorted and walked to Sam's side. He had tried to leave without a Pokémon before? But now that I thought of it, would I really be that much better than no Pokemon at all? I had never fought a Pokémon before, save wrestling with my littermates a long time ago. Then the boy saw me and looked surprised.
"Professor Oak gave you an eevee?"
Sam grinned and his eyes narrowed, the dislike clear on both their faces. "Yeah, Tony. And she's way cooler than your caterpie."
I figured there was a good reason and I decided I didn't like the boy either when he gripped his Pokéball angrily and his face turned red.
"Oh yeah? You wanna bet?" The boy growled. Sam's eyes widened in surprise and my heart sped up. He, much like me, was less than prepared for our first battle. Thankfully, the boy was interrupted by footsteps hurrying towards them.
"Sam! Sam!" A tall woman with bouncy red hair gushed. She ran at Sam with open arms ready to envelop him. Sam gave a squeak of surprise and cringed as she barreled into him. I looked on in confusion. Should I react hostilely? I had just promised to more or less protect the boy, I couldn't shirk my duty this early… Still, while I didn't know a lot about humans, the lady seemed to have good intentions.
"Sam, dear, we barely talked this morning! I won't see you for weeks!" The woman sniffled loudly, tears in her eyes.
"Mom, I'll give you a call as soon as I get to Viridian!"
"Of course you will! But honey, those nasty forest Pokémon could hurt you!"
That lady just insulted Pokémon. My hackles rose but I held back a growl. The lady cared about Sam. She was his mom.
"Hey Mom, meet my eevee." Sam introduced me politely. I snorted as the dust Sam's mom had worked up in her frantic entrance finally reached my nose. Sam's mom took a step back with a look of disapproval.
She grabbed Sam's arm and whispered but of course, my sharp ears caught every word. "Honey, I don't know that it'll be able to protect you. Maybe you could get a new Pokemon. Maybe one a little tougher." His mother reasoned gently, smoothing his hair. My ears drooped a little but I scrunched by my face stubbornly. Who was she to say that, especially when I had been painfully aware of her point not a minute ago?
Sam had the decency to look offended for me. "No, my eevee will be fine. I have to go, Mom. Love you, I'll see you later," he placed a hand on her shoulder as we passed. I gave her a look as we walked away.
I'll show her, I thought, I'll bring Sam back in one piece.
I trotted after him as he entered the forest. It was green, noisy, and had overpowering smells all over. I had a feeling that if I wanted to decipher each one, it would take a lifetime. The further we ventured in, it changed from groomed hedges to tall trees and tall, wild grasses. Just a few minutes into the journey, Sam jumped up, startled. I whipped my head around, searching the foliage for predatory Pokemon.
"Dane!" He exclaimed. I followed his surprised stare to a boy with short, spiky blue hair. The boy saw Sam, turned around, and sped swiftly away. Sam instantly gave chase. I couldn't keep up with Sam's run. After a mere ten paces, I tripped over what I thought was a twig and face-planted onto the forest floor.
No, I didn't fall, something grabbed one of my hind legs. I looked back. A purple mouse with red beady eyes glared at me and its teeth tugged against my soft muscles. I glanced at Sam, who was unaware of my dilemma.
Or he had an didn't care.
No, that wasn't it.
I barely knew him, but somehow, I had invested my trust for every human all into him. If I couldn't trust him, I would never trust a single one of them.
I tried to pull my leg out of the rodent mouth but I had no luck. It was starting to really hurt. Sam was talking heatedly to the other boy.
"Vee-ee!" I cried to my trainer. How weak... but it hurt so badly. The other boy noticed first, being the one facing me. He tapped on Sam's shoulder getting his attention and pointed to me. Sam turned around seeing me on the ground being held down by something and whimpering pitifully. He stood, rigid in shock.
"Vee-ee," I tried again, angrily. Good to know I could count on him. Stunned, he still didn't move a muscle.
"Your Pokédex!" The other boy yelled, exasperated, already running away again. Sam looked like he wanted to run after him but after the slightest hesitation ran toward me.
"Hang on...Nova!" He said pulling out his Pokedex in a hurry. In the process, his camera spilled out, but he didn't notice. Huh. Nova. I liked it. It was obvious he had spent a little time thinking about it. And he wasn't one of the uncreative 'Sparky'-'Daisy'-'Lucky' types, I was glad. But it seemed strange timing to be picking names. Maybe there was something more helpful he could do...why was he playing around with that machine Oak gave him?
- Eevee, canine Pokemon, Normal. Its irregularly configured DNA is affected by its surroundings. It evolves if its environment changes.
Then the Pokedex beeped again and said:
- Ratatta, mouse Pokemon, Normal. Living wherever there is food available, it ceaselessly scavenges for edibles the entire day.
The ratatta was completely ignoring Sam, using its paws to hold onto my leg which was an easier target after I had fallen down. His teeth were digging deeper and a small stream of blood was running down my leg. I turned around to face the mouse. I curled back my lips and growled as menacingly as I could. To my surprise, the bite lessened slightly. The noisy red Pokédex chimed in again.
-Growl, a normal attack. Lowers foe's attack. Eevee's current known attacks:
Tail Whip
Tackle
Helping Hand
Growl
The information put new determination in Sam's eyes. He wanted nothing more at the moment than to help his fallen partner. His eyes no longer shifted towards a thick branch that his hands had been itching to in order to protect me. He gained just a little bit of confidence in both of us.
"Nova! Try tackle!" Sam shouted pointing fiercely at the Rattata as if it would help scare away the angry mouse. Just like that, my doubt in him, my doubt in my power, faded away. I spun around with new exhilaration.
What I did mattered. Sam was there and he was helping. At least for now, I could believe in both of us.
My head slammed into the offending ratatta's. With no momentum behind the attack, it was weak, but it pushed the ratatta off my leg. I stood up quickly, but struggled to put any weight on my wounded leg.
"Alright, Nova, take him down with another tackle!"
I complied, charging at the mouse Pokémon with newfound strength. The purple rodent went flying into a tree. He lay slumped at the trunk. I came closer, nose twitching curiously.
Did I actually beat him? To answer my question he sprung up again with his own tackle that ended with me laying winded at Sam's feet. My eyes widened in shock. The ratatta's body, even smaller than my own, had just sent me tumbling a few feet.
I didn't know it, but later I realized that the glazed look Sam had for a moment was his realization that Pokémon battles were not glorified sporting events.
Sam called out if I was alright. I was alright, even if I was nearly shaking with fear against my foe. I stood up, preventing my leg from slipping underneath me with a little difficulty. I tensed to spring and hit Ratatta, sending it smashing back into the tree trunk a foot above the ground. It lay there dazed for five seconds before its panicky eyes opened once again and it hurtled itself into the bushes.
My back legs gave out and I landed painfully on my butt. I panted, spent, but still, I felt a tingle of energy in my paws. Sam ran up to me and scooped me up and I gave him a small smile. I had just defeated my first opponent. I'd protected both of us—even if it was a boy I had met less than an hour ago.
We had just taken their first step together, as trainer and Pokémon.
#1. Through the next few chapters, try to guess the newly dubbed 'Nova's language. (Such as Sam's name and such).
Also, you will probably notice soon, the chapters are getting longer. That'll happen more when the action really starts.
Raven over and out.
