Thank you Ginny. I'm glad to hear that you still like my writing. And thank you to Robin, as well. We have our differences, it would seem, but we can try to work around them.

Nine Dead Men-- A Historically Accurate Pocahontas Fanfic

Chapter 2: In which Pocahontas discloses a prophecy

"Nine dead men for one new life
Two halves shall be whole
A man and wife."

"What did you say?" Nakoma asked.

Pocahontas opened her eyes and looked down at the ear of corn in her hand. "It's a rhyme," she said, tossing the corn into her basket.

"I can see that it's a rhyme," Nakoma replied. "What's it about?"

"I don't know. It was part of my dream last night."

"You had a dream last night?" Pocahontas' dreams had an unnerving habit of coming true in odd ways. Or unnerving and odd to Nakoma at least.

Pocahontas nodded. "John spoke to me. He said that rhyme, and he apologized. I don't think he's coming back."

"I'm sorry," Nakoma said, somewhat confused.

"Don't be," said Pocahontas. "I think I realize now that it wasn't meant to be. We created peace, and we allowed Ratcliffe to be shown for what he was. Perhaps in the next life we'll be together, but it wasn't meant to happen here."

She was so calm, so accepting. Nakoma almost shuddered at the thought of having such faith. She hastily changed the subject.

"Well, we should get this corn to the store house," she said, picking up her basket.

Later that day, Pocahontas spoke with Grandmother Willow.

"I don't quite understand it," she said, sitting crosslegged on the stump. "But I know it has something to do with Nakoma. I couldn't tell her of course, not when I know so little, but I feel like there's something she should know."

Grandmother Willow frowned, thinking. "It sounds like a prophecy if I ever I heard one," she said slowly. " 'Two halves shall be whole, a man and wife.' It sounds like a wedding, but there has to be more to it. And I haven't a clue as to what the nine dead men mean."

"Perhaps it will come clear in time," Pocahontas said.
