Maryse and Robert had opened the door, no one was there. They then looked down to see a girl, about eight years old, in a basket. She was quite small so she could fit. "Sleeping rune", Robert muttered. Maryse picked up the basket and brought it into the hallway of the institute, lit by witchlight. Waiting there already were the three children, eager to know what it was.
"What are we going to do with her", Robert started, "We can't keep her, for all we know she might have a family somewhere".
Maryse looked disgusted. "We are not just going to throw her out of the institute, Robert. We will raise her as our own, why else would she been brought here?" Maryse had looked down and seen a note.
She picked it up and read it out:
"This girl in the basket I have left in your care. She isn't safe anywhere anymore. She is eight years old but doesn't have a name. Please look after her as one of your own. Don't give her to any vampires, faeries, werewolves, or any Downworlders. If something happens to her, take her to Magnus Bane, he knows what to do. Many thanks for doing this for me. All her records are on the back."
Robert looked at her stunned. "That's it? That's all we have to figure this out? We better get started on her records then."
Maryse and Robert went over to the one of the touch screen boards and started typing it all in. Robert stopped and nearly dropped the basket with the girl. "What is it Robert?"
Maryse looked startled. He showed her the back of the letter. "Oh my…". It read:
Records
Half Vampire, half faerie, half werewolf, half mermaid, half Shadowhunter, half warlock…
The list kept going, the girl was part of every single Downworlder and part Shadowhunter.
The Lightwood children were standing around doorway listening in. It was Jace who broke the silence. "How is that even possible." He turned to face his parabatai, Alec. "I don't know, but I'm going to keep my distance from that girl, she seems dangerous. She doesn't even have a name!" "Agreed". It was Izzy who spoke. "I hope mum and dad's attention don't shift from us to her." She spat out that last word. They all nodded their heads in agreement. "I have a plan to not make her feel welcome."
Maryse delivered the girl to a room, and put her stele over her sleeping rune to make her sleep longer. Maryse had closed the door behind her and made her way back to the ground floor of the institute. As soon as she left, Izzy had slipped in front of her door, and locked it with a rune. She had placed a camera inside her room and outside to see what happens. Then, she walked off, with a big smile on her face.
It was morning. The children were huddled around the screen watching the girl. She had just woken up, her long, thick, dull brown hair had fallen to the floor as she sat up. She walked across the room to the door and turned the handle. But it didn't open. To the children's surprise, the girl had kicked the door down and walked off, her eyes still closed.
Robert was in the kitchen with his wife and were cooking breakfast when the girl had come in, her tangled hair reaching the floor and her eyes still closed. Maryse turned around and jumped.
She calmed down and said, "Dear, why don't you open your eyes?" The girl opened them slowly, startling the husband and wife. They were speechless.
