One Year Earlier
"Since my customary farewell would be oddly self-serving I shall simply say good luck," Ambassador Spock said. He turned to walk away when a sudden revelation stopped him in his tracks and he quickly turned around to go back to his younger self.
Spock merely raised an eyebrow in query to his abrupt return.
"You have met Doctor Leonard McCoy?"
"Yes," the eyebrow was raised higher.
"What do you think of him?"
"He is an illogical human being who lets his emotions dictate his actions."
"That describes him, but not what you think of him," the corner of the Ambassador's mouth quirked.
Spock's brow furrowed as he tried to understand what the older man was asking him. "I believe that is a sufficient enough descript-"
"What is your impression of him? Aside from the fact that he is an illogical emotional human."
"Are you asking whether I dislike him?"
"Yes."
"To dislike something is illogical as it means you have a preference when it would be more logical to maintain a neutral stance on most matters."
Ambassador Spock's mouth quirked again. "Compared to Jim, who's company would you prefer?"
Spock raised his eyebrow for the third time and said nothing. His silence seemed to answer the Ambassador's question because he nodded to himself.
"In my time we had many debates on logic and very rarely agreed upon anything. I was never as close to Dr. McCoy as I was with Jim until we had both retired from Starfleet, though I did come to enjoy the debates with him as they mentally stimulated me. He was one of the few humans I met who refused to back down until Jim ordered us to 'make nice.'"
"I have noticed Dr. McCoy to be a most disagreeable person. Am I expected to believe that I might actually come to appreciate that trait of his?" There was a faint note of disapproval in Spock's voice.
"Yes and later you will come to value him as a close friend, and then perhaps more."
Spock's head cocked to the side. The only outward sign of his confusion. "I am not sure I understand your implications, Ambassador."
"I came to care deeply for the doctor but never told him because I did not think it was logically possible for him care for me as well. I did not learn how he truly thought of me until I lived with him for a time before his death. On his last day he was in so much pain I offered to meld with him to help ease his burden. He agreed and it was then that we both learned the truth of how we felt about each other. Dr. McCoy died 3.2 minutes later."
Undisguised disgust shown in Spock's eyes and his shoulders straightened back. "A great many things have changed now because of Nero. My mother is no more and my home planet has been destroyed. I assure you this will be another change as I have no intention of ever getting that close to Dr. McCoy since I am already in a relationship with Nyota."
"Lieutenant Uhura and I were on friendly terms in my time and she often expressed interest in me until she eventually entered a relationship with Mr. Scot."
"Then I suppose that is another thing that has changed," Spock's tone was brittle. "I am satisfied with how things are between myself and Nyota."
"But are you happy?"
"Happiness is a human emotion and illogical."
"Did I not tell you to put aside logic and do what feels right?" the Ambassador tilted his head, amusement shining in his eyes. "Will you at least meditate on it?"
"I shall give it all the consideration it is due."
The Ambassador kept his face clear of emotion, but inside he crumbled. If he knew anything about his younger self he would dismiss the idea as soon as possible. His idea to rectify his biggest mistake would take more time then he thought. Perhaps he should meditate on this some more. He and his younger self departed. One thoughtful and the other simmering with suppressed anger.
A year later found Ambassador Spock more determined then ever to get the other Spock together with the doctor and when he heard the news that the Enterprise was at New Vulcan he had to approach Dr. McCoy about the situation. No doubt he would be just as stubborn as his counterpart, but he'd come prepared. He had read through many human courtship rituals and one of them was that an unexpected kiss could possibly make the subject become hyper aware of the kisser. Even obsessed.
It sounded illogical and absurd to him, but since McCoy was a human it might work on him. If only he had listened to his logic.
