"Damn it... my vision..." He tried blinking but his vision kept fading. He felt his consciousness slipping, finding it harder and harder to stay awake. Attempting to rise onto his knees, Chiaki failed and fell back down, loosing the battle to stay conscious.
The last thing he saw was the kitchen door before he blacked out completely.
Chapter 2
"Yoshino... are you there? I wont be able to make it tonight... Ill come by in the morning. There is an emergency meeting for another authors storyboard, and they need all the help they can. Make sure you eat and get some rest."
Faintly hearing noise coming from within his apartment, Chiaki slowly stirred, his eyes opening to find himself still in the entrance to his apartment. Looking around he slowly pushed himself up only to be struck be a heavy wave of nausea and dizziness. He pulled his cell phone out of his pocket and cringed at the bright light from the screen.
Chiaki glanced at the time: 5:15
Slowly Chiaki managed to push himself to sit up and dialled for emergency services.
'Hello... I need an ambulance...' He was asked what the emergency was.
'I fell... and I hit...my head.'
'When did this happen?'
'Last night. I think I... blacked out. I only just woke up.' After giving his address he was told an ambulance would be there shortly and the call disconnected. Chiaki closed his eyes, feeling the throbbing of his head. He put a hand to his head and felt a warm sticky substance. He pulled his fingers away and there on his finger tips was blood from the gash on his forehead.
"Ill come by in the morning." Before he could really think of what to tell Tori, there was a loud knocking at his front door.
'Hello. Its the ambulance service. Is there someone here.'
'Its open.' Chiaki yelled, immediately regretting that, feeling a sharp pain go through his head. The door opened and two ambulance officers rushed towards him. The female officer checked his wound before applying a pressure dressing to it while the male officer started taking his vitals, all while asking questions.
'How did you trip?'
'I'm not sure. I just... lost my footing and fell.' Chiaki explained.
'Did you loose consciousness at any stage?'
'Can you follow my finger?'
'How is the pain? We will give you something for it in the ambulance.'
Before he realised, he had been put on a stretcher and was being wheeled out of his apartment and into the elevator.
'Oh god-' Chiaki quickly covered his mouth, feeling the horrible sensation of bile rising his his throat. He was given a vomit bag just in time.
'Are you still feeling nauseous?' Chiaki just gave a nod and let his head rest back against the pillow.
Once outside he was loaded into the ambulance and they were moving, the male officer radioing to the hospital Chiaki's condition while the female officer attended to him in the back.
'I have a young old male. He received a deep gash to the forehead after after a fall from unknown cause. His stats are normal but he has lost consciousness once and has been sick with continued nausea.'
'What's your name?' The female officer asked.
'Chiaki. Yoshino Chiaki.' He answered, taking a few deep breaths to hold back the nausea.
'Ok Chiaki, this should help ease the pain. We should be arriving at the hospital soon. I need you to stay awake ok.' She said trying to sooth him. She checked his wound and kept applying pressure.
'Ok, ill try.' Chiaki said, hoping the drugs would take effect fast and stop the throbbing in his head.
The drive to the hospital was a dizzy blur for Chiaki. He tried to stay calm but the nausea was really starting to get to him and he ended up throwing up two more times.
Feeling dizziness really starting to get to him, he closed his eyes and tried to ignore the noises around him, trying to relax and calm his insides down. He could feel the stretcher being pushed out of the ambulance once it came to a stop and straight through a series of doors followed by loud voices. He groaned as he was shifted into a hospital bed, the move making his stomach churn. He drowned out the noises around him as people started connecting him to machines, putting a drip in the back of his hand and starting his treatment.
'Hi my name is Doctor Ryo and ill be looking after you. Can you tell me your name and how old you are?' Chiaki opened his eyes, coming face to face with a young red headed female doctor.
'Yoshino Chiaki and I'm twenty eight years old.'
'Ok Chiaki I need you to tell me what happened.' The doctor said grabbing a chart to write something down.
'I had just got home and I was heading to the kitchen when...'
'...I couldn't move. My body wouldn't move and I started falling forward and I hit my head on the floor.'
'Have you fallen over before?'
'Not like this. I've fainted from stress but this was... different.'
For the rest of the morning Chiaki was put through blood tests, had his wound sewn up and covered with a bandage and was asked questions about his health prior to his fall. Not long after he fell asleep, the stress of the past twenty four hours finally catching up to him.
When he woke up when it was already night. Chiaki's eyes opened to the window next to his bed and it was already pitch black outside. He looked around and noticed he had been move to room with only the one bed in it and Chiaki was grateful as his head started pounding from the glare of the bright lights over head.
Pushing himself up, Chiaki didn't feel the dizziness he had earlier and was grateful. He put a hand to his head and felt a large soft patch covering where the gash was. He tried thinking about what happened, how he ended up in hospital but he was pulled from his thoughts by a soft knock at the door and the door slowly opening.
'Evening Yoshino-san.' Chiaki gave a small smile and greeted doctor Ryo politely. He was about to ask something when another doctor entered the room.
'This is Professor Nichi, he is the head of Neurology here.' Doctor Ryo introduced the tall, slightly greying professor. The professor called him Yoshino-san as well but Chiaki insisted he just call him Chiaki.
'Hi Chiaki.' The two shook hands and doctor Ryo handed the professor a file and then excused herself.
'I take it your being here is a sign that something isn't alright.' Chiaki asked, feeling uneasy at how far the problem was going.
'Doctor Ryo told me your symptoms over the past few months and what happened to you last night and I would like for you to have an MRI.'
'Why? I... I thought it was just from over working.' Chiaki asked a little panicked.
'It could be. It most likely is. But I would really like to make sure that before I send you home I have booked you in to have the MRI as soon as possible.'
'So I can go home?' Chiaki asked with a smile. Oh how he longed to go home.
'Yes as long as someone comes to pick you up. You cant be walking home in your condition right now. You can use the phone next to your bed.' The doctor walked away for a while, speaking to the nurse behind the nurses station desk. Chiaki watched as he gather paperwork and came back over to him.
'Here is your appointment time.' He said handing Chiaki a card. It had a time for the following day at nine-thirty am. 'And these are your discharge papers.'
'After you have the MRI tomorrow I will contact you in a few days to discuss the results.' Chiaki thanked the doctor and watched as he walked away before turning his attention to the phone beside his bed.
Chiaki took a deep breath to calm himself before dialling Hatori's cell number. He listened as it dialled and started ringing. Tapping his finger, he suddenly became very nervous and was ready to hang up when-
"Hello."
'Tori.'
'Chiaki? Where are you? I just tried calling you at home but there was no answer.'
'Are you busy?' Chiaki asked quietly.
'No, not really. You didn't answer me!'
'I...I need you to come and get me.' Chiaki said carefully.
'Get you? From where?'
'I'm at the hospital.' He muttered.
Half an hour later Hatori came running through the door of the emergency room. He looked around and spotted a nurse at the front desk.
'Excuse me. I got a call saying Yoshino Chiaki is here and that I was to come and collect him?'
'Yes if you would follow me, ill take you to him.' Hatori followed closely behind the nurse, being led past emergency beds towards one of the more private rooms. The door opened and there was Chiaki, sitting on the bed putting his shoes back on.
'Chiaki!' Hatori said a little louder than he intended.
Chiaki groaned, putting a hand to his head. 'Not so loud.' He whispered, feeling a sharp pain in his head. Hatori put a hand on his shoulder, staring at the white patch on his forehead that already had blood seeping onto it.
'What happened? Are you ok?'
'He will be fine. He had a deep gash that required twelve stitches.' Doctor Ryo said entering the room.
'I had a fall.' Chiaki said simply. 'They wanted me to contact someone to take me home.'
'You're staying with me.'
'But I'm ok!' Chiaki argued.
'I don't care. Your coming back to my place where I can keep an eye on you.' Hatori said receiving a pout from Chiaki.
'I'm not a child. You have work to do. So do I.' Chiaki argued.
'I told Takano what happened, he has pushed the deadline back a few weeks so you can recover and has given me the rest of the week off to look after you.'
'When can I take him home?' Hatori asked.
'Right now. He has signed his discharge papers, he was just waiting for you to arrive.' The doctor replied. He told Chiaki to take it easy and wish him the best before heading off. With the help of Hatori Chiaki slid off the bed and with a steadying hand from Hatori, made his way out of the hospital out into a waiting taxi.
'So what happened?' Hatori asked once the taxi had pulled away from the hospital.
'I fell.' Chiaki said in a small voice.
'I know that but how?' Hatori growled.
'Not sure. The professor of Neurology here has booked me in for an MRI tomorrow to try and figure out why.' Chiaki explained. He sighed and leaned his head against Hatori's shoulder.
'I'm sorry. Just let me rest for a bit.' Chiaki whispered still feeling a bit dazed from the pain medication he was given earlier. Hatori watched as Chiaki relaxed and slowly dozed off on his shoulder, smiling at the content look on his face.
