Chapter 2 ~A Chat Between Friends
Gaia's shrill laugh echoed back at me as two earthborns rose from the earth and grabbed my arms, pinning them at my sides ."Yes little demigod, it was a trap. How intelligent of you to realize that." The goddess' voice was mocking and her smile sinister. "I can barely believe that you actually followed my orders; surely you weren't actually thick enough to fall for my bluff?"
My face screwed up as I realized how stupid and reckless Gaia's plot had made me act. This was never about any favor, she had just wanted me in her possession. And now here I was, savior of Olympus and slayer of Gaia, in the hands of the very people who I had killed. "Stupid, stupid idiot," I cursed under my breath.
Gaia just laughed, a sound so powerful I swear I could feel the ice shiftinng beneath me. "Now you are mine, foolish boy and I will have my revenge on yo and on Olympus!"
"No! My friends will come for me! I will not have been forgotten, Gaia. Don't underestimate the demigods, you did once before and look where it led you to: nothing more than a few rocks in a box."
The earthborn tightened their grips on my arms, their mace-like hold on me becoming almost unbearable.
Well that's going to leave some bruises.
The goddess snarled at me, teeth like rusty razor blades. "You would do well to be less careless with your tone, son of the sea," she growled. "Considering we will be spending a lot of time together from now on."
"I seriously doubt that. We have an entire legion of Roman and Greek demigods, what do you have, a couple of dracnae and an earthborn or two? You are nothing compared to us!" I wondered if Gaia could tell I was lying. Okay, so we did have an entire legion of fighters, but not all of them would want to go out of their way's to save me.
"Oh your friends will not be coming for you, they wouldn't want to come all this way to rescue a traitor, after all."
No. No no no no and no. I was not a traitor, and nothing she could do would prove that. Still my heart rate picked up and I struggled against my captors. She was a master of manipulation, having a millennia to perfect her talent, and I wouldn't put it past her to resort to something as low as trickery to get what she wants. "What did you do, Gaia?"
"Almost nothing, I swear," she said with a sly smile. "I only left a note describing in excruciating detail how much you hated the entirety of the camp and Olympus."
An almost inhuman roar escaped my mouth as I tried to make a lunge for her. My actions were in vain however, as my captors just clamped down harder on the bruised flesh of my forearms, giving me no resistance. I bared my teeth."What did it say?"
She waved her earthen hand through the air and the snow and ice particles collected in front of her, blurring the goddess to an outline. Almost like an Iris message that didn't require a rainbow.
"Why don't you let your little girlfriend read it to you?"
I gazed at the screen in disbelief as the colours of the screen warped and twisted into an image of my cabin.
Annabeth stood in the center, the only place that wasn't covered in some form of clothing or garbage, holding a creased piece of stationary.
Her eyes went wide in horror and incredulity as she read it out loud to the empty room.
"To the filthy god of Olympus and the halfbreed demigods,
It is time I stopped pretending to be on your side and revealed my true colours. I am leaving your stupid excuse of a camp for my true mistress, Gaia. She will lead the world into a time of peace and equality that is foreign to the Olympians and their children.
My mistress will be revived and I will be hailed a hero for spying on the side of the gods. Be ready for war, an army marches on Olympus as soon as Gaia has been saved. I will be leading the battle, standing in the front line, to fight for my true master.
I can't believe everyone was idiotic enough to fall for my ploy, everything I said, did, everything I was was a lie. None-"
Her voice cracked and tears splashed onto the page, smudging the ink. "No," she sobbed, sinking to the floor. "No, Percy, please not you too."
I screamed bloody murder at Gaia and the monsters that held me back as I fought tooth and nail against them, calling to Annabeth all the while.
"Oh, is little Perseus upset?" She mocked me."Well that just won't do, she didn't even make it to the end of the note." The goddess clucked disapprovingly. "Let me show you something else now." Gaia waved her hand and the image warped again, becoming the Olympian throne room.
The council was undoubtedly in session. All the Olympians were present, including Hades, and even most of the minor gods had been invited to the was holding 'my' note, looking as regal and powerful as ever atop his shining platinum throne. But unlike Annabeth he was furious, which wasn't altogether too uncommon.
"TRAITOR!" He yelled, swinging around to glare at my dad. Thunder boomed in the distance, and I wondered if I was just hearing it from the message."THAT BOY HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT TROUBLE POSEIDON! HE IS A TRAITOR, A LIAR AND A FRAUD!"
Dad stood up then, his face contorting into a look of such rage that I imagined waves across the earth clashing in anger. "My son is no traitor, Zeus! He saved Olympus more than once, since when have real traitors ever done that?"
"If you won't believe your own brother then maybe the words of your son will convince you. Look for yourself and tell me that he hasn't betrayed us all!" Zeus shoving the note into dad's hands.
The room was alive with whispers and hushed conversations as they waited for Poseidon to finish reading and deliver the verdict.
Sea green eyes blinked as he came to the last line. Poseidon flung the letter into Zeus' lap, settling down on his throne once more. Face still blank, his head dropped into his hands in shame, disappointment, and sadness.
"Is it true?" asked Apollo, griping the arms of his throne. The sun god had always liked Percy, the kid was just so darn likeable. Surely all of that couldn't have been acting?
"Yes." Came the weak reply, muffled by Poseidon's hands.
With another laugh Gaea swiped her hand through the image, interrupting the gods' and goddess' cries of scandal and outrage.
"You might have them believing you, but nothing you can do will make me fight against my friends and family!"
"Oh you won't be fighting them." Gaia looked smug. "But I'm sure Perseus here will do a fine job of filling your shoes, so to speak."
From the earth in the chest emerged another figure. It began taking shape, chunks building up and sliding into place until there was a perfect copy of me staring me straight in the face. But there was something different about him, something that I had never caught when staring at myself in the mirror. This copy of me was made purely to do wrong. It's eyes glinted maniacally and its face contorted into an expression I could describe only as sick glee.
"Hello there," he said in a voice just like mine.
"No, impossible! They will never fall for this, Gaia," I shouted, directing my words at the earth goddess. "Your plan will fail and Olympus will not fall. You are nothing without the aid of the Giants."
"Big words for the one who's never going to get off of this bloody iceberg again," laughed Perseus. "And I wouldn't be so sure about the demigods not believing me. I mean they didn't really know you after all, now did they?"
I really wanted to punch that smile off of his face, but nobody was letting me loose anytime soon.
"So while Perseus over here is fighting in a war, I will be keeping you here to enact my own special brand of revenge. I want you to meet your torturer. He'll be spending quite an amount of time with you from now on."
Gaia raised her arm above the remaining dirt in the chest, making a motion like she was lifting something heavy.
Great, another earthborn for me to get chummy with.
"Hello Jackson," he said, brandishing a whip in my face. Apparently this one was a little smarter than the rest of the earthborn Gaia usually raised. "I would be lying if I told you that you have more than and a millionth of a chance at escape, so I'm not even going to go there."
Pulling Riptide from where it was discarded on the ice, he used the weapon to slice my shirt in half. The blade barely touched my skin, ghosting over it like the memory of a kind touch.
He raised the whip above his head, giving me a chance to locate all of the chips of sharp glass intertwined with the leather. It was obviously designed to bring pain to the victim.
"Don't feel the need to keep quiet," he snarled as the leather arched downwards.
I screamed.
Ouch. Sorry Percy. But not really #sorrynotsorry
Okay yeah, I suck at author's notes and I'm already exhausted. Which makes them even worse. For those of you who are hoping for an update to my Merlin story, I can assure you that it is a work in progress at the 'mo.
Thanks again for reading,
