Work:

"Hey, Laila, what are you doing after work?" Chandra asked.

"Going home to take care of my siblings. Why?"

"Well, I think you should spend one day away from home and with your co-workers."
"Thanks Chandra, but I still have to baby-sit. My mom is always doing drugs and my dad never comes home from the bar anymore. I'm the only one responsible enough to take care of my siblings. Jerry, the next door neighbor, watches them until I can get home from work. I always make sure to make him something special for his dinners, though."

"You know, taking care of your five siblings and a grown man who lives next door is a big job. Why can't your parents ever step up for a change?"

"I just told you why. Would you want a drug addict and a drunk watching you? I didn't think so."

The Boss walked in then.

"What's all this talking about?"

"Sorry, boss. But Laila here was just telling me how she watches after both her five siblings and the grown man who lives next door."

"And where are your parents? You're only sixteen, you know."

"My moms a drug addict and my dads a drunk who never comes home from the bar. The neighbor watches them during the day until I can get home from work and then I make him dinner. He doesn't really have any family to look after him anyways."

"So this is your way of asking for a raise?"

"No, but I thought you might like to know what we were talking about."

"I'll see about getting you a raise. Just get back to work. I'll make sure you're out of here at a decent hour tonight. The roads are going to be a mess so I'll be closing early anyways."

"Okay boss."
