Get Some Rest
"Courf set him here!" Joly said as he ran to the back room of the cafe to grab his medical bag. Courfeyrac set Gavroche on the table, trying as hard as he could to not jostle the boy. Gavroche moaned in pain and Courfeyrac hushed him.
"Shhh," he said, "It's okay, you're okay."
"Courf, it hurts," Gavroche said softly.
"I know mon petit, I know," Courfeyrac said gently, "Joly and Combeferre are going to fix you right up."
"Gavroche can you tell me what hurts?" Joly asked, pushing his way past the other students and standing next to the table.
"My head," Gavroche replied, "And my stomach." Combeferre began cleaning the cut on the boy's head while Joly lifted Gavroche's shirt so they could see the damage. The Amis all gasped when they saw the bruising and Courfeyrac made a strangled noise. How could anyone do this to a child?
"Gavroche what did they do to you?" Enjolras asked.
"One of 'em kicked me," Gavroche mumbled.
"I'm going to need to bind his chest," Joly said, "Courf, 'Ferre, can you lift him slightly so we can remove his shirt and I can wrap his chest?" The two boys nodded and carefully eased the gamin up. Joly worked as quickly as he could and pretty soon they had Gavroche lying down again, fresh bandages around his chest.
"How's it look?" Joly asked Combeferre as the other student returned to the wound on Gavroche's head.
"I'm going to need to stitch this," Combeferre replied, "If I leave it it'll only get infected." Joly nodded and began getting the supplies out of his bag that he knew Combeferre would need.
"Courf, can you make sure he doesn't move around too much?" Combeferre said and the other student nodded.
"Gavroche, Joly and Combeferre need to fix up your head," Courfeyrac said quietly, "It might hurt a bit, but you need to stay as still as possible, okay?"
"Okay," Gavroche murmured and reached his hand out. Courfeyrac took it and squeezed reassuringly before nodding to Joly and Combeferre that they could start. Combeferre started stitching the wound closed and Gavroche whimpered, tears leaking from his eyes.
"Shhh, hush now," Courfeyrac murmured.
"Papa," Gavroche moaned.
"Hush mon petit," Courfeyrac said, "Everything's opkay, I'm here."
"Almost finished," Combeferre said, "And... done. Well done Gavroche."
"There you go," Courfeyrac said, "You did excellent!" Gavroche smiled slightly and yawned.
"Get some sleep Gavroche," Joly said, "You're going to be fine now."
"Will you stay?" Gavroche asked Courfeyrac.
"Of course mon petit," Courfeyrac nodded.
"We'll all stay," Grantaire added and Gavroche smiled sleepily.
"Get some rest," Courfeyrac said, brushing some hair off the child's forehead.
"Thanks for saving me," Gavroche said as he drifted off to sleep surrounded by watchful Amis.
Alright, so I wasn't totally crazy about this ending. The reason it took so long for this chapter to exist at all is because I got distracted by school and work and other fanfics so by the time I came back to finish this one I had lost all inspiration.
Then I got a tiny spark and this is the result of that. So, I hope you liked it! I apologize for the long delay and thanks so much for reading!
