Chapter 1 Independence Day
Washington, D.C.: Hall of Justice: July 4
"You're not ready." Those words constantly kept repeating in Robins' head. As he listened to Superman talk about a fire in Cadmus and Zatara's report trouble with Wotan blocking out the Sun he kept contemplating it. Was Roy right about the Justice League? How long did they have to wait before learning about the real League headquarters in space? Robin always thought Batman told him everything, but perhaps that was too naïve. After all, Cadmus was a big concern Batman had just admitted, but he never bothered to inform Robin of this said concern.
"Stay put," ordered Batman.
Robin's head snapped up. "What, why?"
Flash stepped forward. "You're not trained-."
"Since when," snapped Kid Flash.
"I mean you're not trained to be on this team," replied Flash, gesturing to the rest of the mentors.
"You'll get your chance," insured Aquaman. "When you're ready."
"Until then, stay put," ordered Batman, he stared them each down to show he was serious.
Kid Flash, Robin, and Aqualad watched as their mentors left with the other League members while they sat there waiting, like children.
Kid Flash released a groan of frustration. "Ready, how are we ever supposed to be ready when they treat us like... sidekicks!"
"My king, my mentor, I thought he trusted me," whispered Aqualad.
"Trust, they don't even trust us with the basics, they have a secret HQ in space," yelled Kid Flash.
"What else aren't they telling us," questioned Aqualad.
"I have a better question," said Robin. "Why didn't we leave with Speedy?" If Batman wasn't going to trust Robin what was the point of them even being partners?
The three of them were quiet before Aqualad spoke.
"What is project Cadmus," he asked.
"Don't know," replied Robin, he grinned, "But I can find out."
Robin walked over to the computer and started to hack into it. If Batman wasn't going to tell him anything, then he was going to find out for himself.
The computer responded, "Access denied."
He laughed, "Want to bet." He began to type a series of codes until he had gotten into the primary system.
"Whoa, how are you doing that," asked Kid Flash, his mouth hanging open.
"It's the same system as the Bat cave," explained Robin. Bruce underestimates him way too much.
Once the file opened, he began to read it aloud.
"Let's see. Genetic lab here in D.C., that's all there is, but if Batman's suspicious maybe we should go and investigate," he suggested.
"Solve their case before they do. It would be poetic justice," said Aqualad.
"Hey," laughed Robin "They're all about Justice."
Aqualad sighed "But they said to stay put."
"For the blocking out the sun mission, not this," argued Robin.
"Wait," interrupted Kid Flash, turning Robin towards him. "Are you going to Cadmus? Because if you're going, I'm going."
Robin knew that Kid Flash would be the first to join him, all they needed now was to convince Aqualad. Kid Flash and Robin turned Aqualad and gave him a smirk.
Aqualad glanced at both. "Just like that, we're a team on a mission," he remarked.
"We didn't come for a play date," said Robin.
Aqualad grinned
Washington, D.C.: Cadmus: July 4
Aqualad and Robin both approached Cadmus to find Kid Flash, who had run ahead, dangling from a window.
"It's what his name, Flash boy," yelled the firemen chief.
"Kid Flash," yelled Kid Flash down to the fireman.
"So smooth," mocked Robin.
"Does he have to rush ahead?" asked Aqualad annoyed. "We need a plan, we need… Robin?" He looked over to see Robin had already gone ahead, helping Kid Flash through the window.
Aqualad sighed and made his way to the building. "I need to borrow that," he called to the one fireman holding the hose. He reached for the two hilts that he kept strapped on his back. Water from the fire hoses started to move to the handles of his weapons. He then used the water to carry him up to the floor where the men, who Kid Flash saved and then left, were located.
"Step aboard, now," ordered Aqualad.
The two men jumped on. He stepped through the window gently carrying the men down on the water. When they reached the ground, he stepped inside the room to where Kid Flash and Robin were already digging through desk cabinets.
"Appreciate the help," said Aqualad, with sarcasm.
"Hey, you handled it. Besides, we're here to investigate," said Robin, continuing to hack into the computer.
Aqualad could only roll his eyes as he walked out of the room. He stopped dead in his tracks when he spotted something in the elevator, a figure. The light was dim, but Aqualad was sure he saw horns on top of the mysterious figure. It wasn't human Aqualad was sure of that. As soon as the doors closed with the creature disappearing Kid Flash showed up at his side.
"I didn't think the elevators were still working," said Kid Flash.
Robin then ran over to them both. "This is wrong," he announced. He turned on his wristwatch computer and analyzed the elevator. "Thought so. This is a high-speed express elevator. It doesn't belong on a two-story building."
"Neither was what I saw," said Aqualad.
Aqualad walked over and pulled the doors open. It was revealed it wasn't anything close to an elevator of a two-story building. It went down like a bottomless pit.
"And that's why they need an express elevator," commented Robin. He launched a grappling hook and dropped down. Robin kept going down until his rope stopped. He jumped to the 26th door. Aqualad and Kid Flash soon followed on his wire and jumped down next to him while he attempted to get the door opened.
"Bypassing security…. Okay, go."
Aqualad pulled apart of the doors, and they all stepped out into the hallway. Except for Kid Flash who ran out ahead of the other two.
"Wait," Aqualad called after him, but it was too late, Kid Flash already ran out of their sight.
When Robin and Aqualad both caught up to him, they stopped dead in their tracks at what they saw. Creatures which looked like a whole different species marched by. Some as large as elephants, others as tiny as squirrels, with horns, tails, and even scales. They didn't look like anything Aqualad had seen before. One of the small creatures turned to them, its eyes glowed red.
"No, nothing odd going on here," mumbled Aqualad.
Washington, D.C.: Cadmus: July 4
"They're here." Whispered the one voice.
"Should we tell Double X?" said the other voice.
"He already knows," replied another.
"They're going to come here, aren't they?" said the one.
"What should we do?" asked the other voice.
"We'll wait," said the voice.
"Yes, we'll wait," they all agreed.
Washington, D.C.: Cadmus: July 4
"Okay, I am officially overwhelmed," announced Robin.
The boys walked into a room where there were these creatures in glass cases giving off electric energy. The whole place was just filled with them. The boys finally stopped in the middle of the room gazing at everything.
"This is how they hide this massive underground place from the world. The real Cadmus isn't on the grid. It provides its own power with these things," said Kid Flash, pausing as he looked at one of the creatures. "Must be what they're bred for."
"Of course," replied Aqualad. "Even the name is a clue. The Cadmus of myth created a new race by sowing dragons deep within the Earth."
"This Cadmus creates new life too," said Robin. He walked over to the computer plugging in his wristwatch. "Let's find out why." He began to hack into the computer system until he got in. "They call them G-Gnomes. Wow! Look at the status on these things! Super strength, telepathy, these are living weapons!"
"They're building an army, but for who?" asked Kid Flash.
"Wait, there's something else," announced Robin. "Project Kr, argh," he kept hitting the button. "The files encrypted I can't-,"
"Don't move!"
The three turned to see G-Gnomes with Guardian.
"Wait, Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash?"
"At least he got your name right." Robin joked to Kid Flash only for the young speedster to glare at him.
"I know you, Guardian, a hero," said Aqualad.
"I do my best," responded Guardian.
"Then what are you doing here?" questioned Kid Flash.
"I'll be the one asking the questions boys. I'm chief of security. Your tress-passing, but I'm sure we can call the League and sort this whole thing out," replied Guardian.
While Aqualad and Kid Flash were talking, Robin had managed to hack into the system and just finished downloading the file on Project Kr.
"You really think the League is going to approve that you are making weapons," snapped Kid Flash.
Guardian looked confused. "Weapons, what are you…what have I-."
Robin noticed that the G-Gnome on Guardians shoulder horns start to glow when Kid Flash announced about the G-Gnomes weapons. Guardian began to act disoriented. Robin could only guess one thing, mind control.
And just like that Guardians persona altered in a flash.
"Take them down hard! No mercy!" he ordered
Robin quickly went into action. He threw smoke pellets and launched his grappling hook, swinging out of the room. He had to find the elevator and fast.
Robin ditched Kid Flash and Aqualad, but if he didn't provide them an escape route, they would be in trouble. Robin ran down the hall and seeing the elevator and started to hack it open. He could only hope that Kid Flash and Aqualad would soon be following behind him.
Starting to hack when he noticed in the file of Project Kr said that it was at sublevel 52. They were at sublevel 26 which meant to get to it they had to go down. Should he really risk their chance to get out of here to see what this Project Kr was? There might be a chance that they won't be able to escape if he takes the risk, but they said that they were going to investigate Cadmus. So, they'll investigate Project Kr.
Suddenly Kid Flash was at his side yelling.
"Way to be a team player Rob!"
"Weren't you right behind me," mocked Robin.
Kid Flash was about to shout again, but then the door opens, and they're both in the elevator, with Aqualad jumping in just before the door closes.
"We're going down," gasped Aqualad.
"Dude out is up," Kid Flash shouted at Robin.
"Excuse me, Project Kr, is down on sublevel 52," stated Robin. He probably should have asked them first, but they were kind of on a time crunch.
"This is out of control," groaned Aqualad. "Maybe we should contact the League," he suggested.
Robin knew that Batman would be pissed that not only did he disobey his order, but also hacked into League files.
Just then the elevator door opened, and Robin forgot all about Batman and the League together. Project Kr, he had to find out what it was. The need to know was driving him as he ran out of the elevator. Aqualad and Kid Flash reluctantly followed him.
"Which way," Aqualad asked Robin hiding behind a container.
"Yeah, creepy looking hallway one or creepy looking hallway two," commented Robin.
Robin wasn't joking when he said that. It looked like that was in the inside of some cave, but the walls resembled the inside of a stomach with pods everywhere.
"Halt!"
The three looked over to see another creature standing in the hallway. Robin didn't get much time to think before two gasoline tanks came hurling towards them. The boys dodge as it hit the wall and exploded. Robin threw a birdarang, but the creature stopped it and threw two more tanks at them.
It looked like they had no other choice, but to go into the second hallway and soon Guardian and the G-Gnomes were pursuing them. Robin wished he'd found a map layout of the building before.
Kid Flash ran ahead of them and was soon out of Robin's view. When Robin turned the corner of the hall, he saw Kid Flash standing there.
Hurry," he called and jumped into the room.
Robin had no idea why Kid Flash had picked this room until he saw the label on the door, Project Kr. He jumped into the room followed by Aqualad. Once they were all inside Aqualad kicked the tank that was keeping the door open, slamming it shut.
"I disabled the door," announced Robin at the door locks. "We're safe."
"We're trapped," contradicted Aqualad.
Aqualad was right. Robin didn't know how they were going to get out of this one.
"Um guys, you may want to see this," called Kid Flash.
The two walked over to Kid Flash as he turned the lights on.
"Whoa."
There in front of them was a girl in a glass case, two letters labeled it.
Kr
They had found Project Kr.
