"A rabbit?" My jaw dropped. "A Volkswagen Rabbit?"

Jacob looked at me funny. "I know, its no Lamborghini." He seemed sort of embarrassed.

"This thing is…" I ran my fingers along the square hood and laughed. "It's adorable, and in a strange way, kind of awesome."

This seemed to lighten his mood. For a second, I almost thought he cracked a smile.

Jacob took me to a place called La Push, where the ocean met the earth in a long beach.

"La Push." I rolled the name around on my tongue. It sounded funny when I said it; alien.

I smiled when the smell of the salt came through the crack in the rabbit's window. I hummed in satisfaction. The thick rocky sand wasn't like the smooth white beaches we had in LA, but it was still the same familiar Pacific. We stood on the beach and I stared out at the horizon, incapable of removing the subtle grin from my face.

"Thank you." I turned to him, still smiling.

"What?" He asked, puzzled.

"Thank you for bringing me here." He seemed to pick up on my meaning.

"I thought it might make you feel a bit more at home." He nodded.

I nodded as well and stuffed my hands in my jacket pockets. My hair whipped around and became thick with the weight of the salty air. The wind was chilly and the sun was swallowed by angry grey clouds yet still my mood could not be dampened.

I caught Jacob staring uncomfortably at a massive dead tree further down on the beach, at the cliffs, and at the water in the distance. There was history here with him, unpleasant memories; it was evident in his dark eyes.

"What is it?" I asked, no longer smiling. He looked back at me, dazed, almost as if he has lost where he is in time.

"What is what?" He asked after a moment.

"Why are you staring like that?" I pressed.

He looked at me with a peculiar expression and shook his head. "You see too much with those strange eyes."

This was true. My eyes were yellowy green; a pretty rare color. And they saw things past what most people saw. I knew I saw too much. But coupled with my undying curiosity, I also wanted to know too much.

I watch him and wait until he sighs and surrenders.

"This place reminds me of someone I used to know, that's all." He wouldn't look at me while he said this. He knew what I would see in his face. I still saw but I didn't ask.

I reached down and pulled my jeans up around my knees. My toes dug into the sand and dug up rocks as I ran toward the water. The big, smooth stones cackled and shifted under my feet.

I reached the water and flung my feet in. Jacob began to run after me.

"Wait!" He yelled and his voice was strange with terror. "What are you doing? Stop!"

I close my eyes as the water rushed up around me. I breathed in the salty air and waded in further, letting my fingertips run along the rough surface. My mind was home again.

Suddenly, I felt Jacob's massive hands on my arms. His grip dug into my skin and hurt my arms.

"Stop it!" I yelped and pushed away from him. His grip tightened, his face was constricted in some feverish combination of anger and fear. "Jake, stop! You're hurting me!" I managed to wriggle one hand free and slapped him across the face. His head twitched slightly to one side and his cheek flared red.

He seemed shaken and stared at me in shock.

"I'm sorry…" He stuttered. "I…I thought you were going to…"

"You thought what?" I barked. "What could I possibly do? It's the ocean, Jacob, not a meat grinder!" I shoved past him and stalked back to the rabbit.

He trailed me about ten feet behind and kept a safe distance. I sat in silence with my arms crossed and stared out the window. Jacob got in the driver's side and waited for a moment.

"My friend…almost drowned here." He mumbled. Slowly, I turned to look at him. "When you ran, it… I didn't mean to hurt you. I just… I thought you were going to drown too."

His subtle vulnerability made me feel guilty. "That's what you were thinking about, wasn't it? When you were staring?"

He nodded.

"I'm sorry about your friend." I looked down at my lap and slumped in the seat. "And I'm sorry I hit you."

"It's alright. I'm sorry I hurt you." He replied.

"You didn't." I lied. He smiled just a tiny bit.

"Let's find a place that doesn't remind you of your friend." I suggested. He nodded and started up the rabbit. It puttered to life. He seemed lost in thought for a moment.

"I know a place." His smile was fully present for once; bright, almost excited. "It's a bit of a walk. You up for it?"

Sorry, this chapter is a bit short. I promise the next one will be longer.

Also, I apologize in advance for any inconsistencies. I'm trying my best to get the details right, but there sure are a lot of them.

If you've got any input or suggestions, or anything to say at all, please review!
