Project: Demi

Chapter 2

I wrapped my arms around myself and forced low sobs to escape my throat as I made my way towards the approaching footsteps. Except the footsteps abruptly stopped. I halted in confusion. Why had they stopped? Weren't they going to search the floor, check for survivors?

I tilted my head and narrowed my eyes in concentration as I drowned out the rushing water coming from the over-filled labs throughout the floor. I drowned out the soft swoosh of chemicals being fed to the creatures in Dining Halls B and D, and the gulping of said creatures as they ingested the necessary nutrients. I drowned out the light bang of a body hitting the glass of a lab on the opposite side of the lab. Instead, I focused my enhanced hearing on the words coming out of someone's-presumably male- mouth.

"This is gonna slow us down. Our route to the Queen takes us straight through these labs." I sighed in relief as this was said. They're not here to finish the Red Queen's job and kill anyone in sight, so I should be relatively safe. Well, I would be… If I didn't have weapons all over my body and more in the duffel bag on my back. God, I hope they all have really bad eye sight and won't notice the deformity these weapons make me seem I have. Oh, God! What if they demand to search my duffel!? Well damn. Maybe this isn't the best plan…

"Rain, J.D., see how bad the flooding is." The strict command yanked me out of my thoughts and forced me to focus on the task at hand. "Kaplan, find us an alternate route."

Two sets of footsteps branched off from the rest of their little group and started heading… right for me.

Okay, crap. Focus, Demi! You have to get out of here, and for that to happen with you even remotely intact, they have to believe you're a sad, frail survivor of the horrible event that happened here.

Okay, let's do this.

I quickly schooled my dark features into terrified mask. Oh God, this can't be pretty. At least I don't wear makeup or they might mistake me for a monster.

I let out soft sobs and took short, measured steps away from the approaching steps. As I continued walking, I heard the steps stop.

"J.D., you hear that?" As this new, rough, voice spoke up, I couldn't help the flush from forming in my cheeks. Well, damn. I hope the girl is as sexy as her voice. If I'm gonna die down here, at least I'll have something nice to look at.

"Yeah." Was the short reply the mystery girl received. I heard a soft rustling noise, which I assumed was one of them giving the other a signal. They both moved in the direction the noise (the sobs and footsteps-both coming from me), one in front of the other. The set of footsteps in front, I could tell, belonged to the mystery girl. They were lighter, swifter. The male was heavier on his feet and he had a habit of dragging his left foot, just a little bit.

After a few moments, the first set of footsteps finally entered the hallway in which I was walking down. I fought the urge to turn around and find out if the girl really was as sexy as her voice. Except that would give me away. I should be in shock, so I wouldn't be aware of her entering the hallway.

"Hey, you." Finally.

I whirled around, my dark brown locks flying wildly, at the sound of her voice.

"W-who are you?" I questioned, my voice shaking. I fought the urge to let my eyes run down her body, as she would notice. I could, however, examine her face. Damn. She had her hair in a braid, with some hair hanging at the sides of her face. She looked Spanish. She had slanted eyes and beautifully plump lips. Overall, she was a beauty. She wasn't the typical kind of beauty, though, not the type I go for. Her face wasn't caked in makeup, her hair wasn't perfect and her eyebrows weren't artfully arched. Not the kind of girl I'm normally attracted to, but I couldn't help the feeling of want rushing through me. I don't know what it was about her. Maybe it was her beautifully sculpted lips. Maybe it was the aura of power that said, very clearly, 'I can take your ass down in three seconds you make a move'. Maybe it's the fact that she looked nice with a gun-which what the actual fuck, Demi? Maybe it was the fact that her default expression seemed to be sarcastic.

She kept her gun trained on me as she replied.

"My name's Rain. Who are you? What are you doing here?" I was so busy staring at her deep, brown eyes that I almost didn't hear the question and I definitely didn't hear the male step into the hall behind his team mate, gun trained on me and a strict look on his face.

"Demitra. I live here- or lived here- I-I don't know. What happened here?" I stuttered, clutching my shaking hands to my chest.

"Let's take her to One. He'll want to question her." The guy-presumably J.D.-said before Rain could give me some bogus excuse. I jumped at the sound of the new voice, and not a fake jump either. My eyes darted from Rain to stare wide-eyed at the male who had caught me off-guard.

"Alright." Rain sighed before motioning to me, "Let's go." She motioned for me to walk in front of her and behind J.D. and I internally sighed. He wasn't nearly as cute as Rain.

I timidly walked forward, keeping my eyes darting from Rain to the man, to their guns wildly. It was silent as they led me to the rest of the group. Since there was nothing to do, I tuned in to the conversation the others were having.

"-did she do it?" came the voice of Alice. I felt my eyes go wide at the sound of her voice. No, no, no, no, no! She can't be here! She should be up top, where it's safe! She should have been getting ready to go out somewhere, with some co-workers that I don't know the names of! God dammit. Well… now I have to get out of here, and I have to bring Alice with me. She can't become zombie chow. She's too good for that. I'll have to see if I can help that girl-Rain-out too.

"That we don't know, but outside interference is a possibility." After the surprisingly deep voice stated this, there was the sound of water swishing around and a soft bang, followed by a loud exclamation of 'Jesus' and some gasps. I assume another body hit the glass.

"Hey, you okay?" That voice… I know that voice… Oh… That's Spence. Well, him I can let die. It's no secret that he's an asshole. Well, it's no secret to me. But then again, most people who work with Umbrella Corp. are assholes.

Alice hummed an affirmative before there was a soft rustling

"Here."

"No, I'm fin-"

"No, please. It's cold in here."

"I-do you remember anything?"

"From what?"

"From before all this."

"No, nothing before the train… You?"

There was a slight pause before Alice responded with, "No, nothing."

I quit listening with a roll of my eyes, because of course they can't remember anything. That would just be too easy. If she had her memories this would be a million times easier. Hell, I could sit back and just let her do all the work! There's a reason she was supposed to become head of security once Bridge retires.

A moment after I stopped listening, having been caught in thought, we reached the others.

"Sir, we found a survivor." J.D. said just as I stepped around the bend.

A man's-who I'm assuming he was addressing- head snapped around to quickly scan me. I kept my eyes on the flooded lab and made sure I was trembling softly.

"What's your name?" At the sound of the deep voice belonging to the man who had, apparently, finished looking me over, my eyes snapped to stare at his. I opened and closed my mouth a few times for effect before Rain spoke for me.

"She said it's Demitra." I snapped around to stare at Rain, who wasn't looking at me. Instead she was looking steadily at the higher up. I slowly turned to follow her lead.

"Is that your name? Demitra?" The deep voiced man questioned, and I tepidly nodded in response.

"Do you remember anything?" At the seemingly unusual question, my eyes flitted around the group gathered here. They stopped for a moment on Alice, who was staring intently at me. After holding her stare for a second too long, I turned back to the man questioning me.

"Yeah… I was in my room, about to go to work, but when I tried to open my door it shocked me. I stayed in there for I don't know how long, but after a while it opened on its own. When I walk-walked out, there was nobody there. So I wen-went to check the lab and it was flooded and there was a body floating in it-a dead body! I don… I don't understand what's happening. Why are people dead? What's going on?" I let a few more tears slip out as I explained.

"What's your last name?" Okay, of course he could be rude and ignore everything I say. Well then.

"Winchester. Demitra Winchester." I sighed.

He nodded to another man in the hall who, I would assume, then checked the Umbrella database for my name. After a tense moment, he nodded back to the man with the deep voice.

"She's clear."

And just like that, no more guns were pointed at me.

Good. Without me-and by that I mean all my guns-I don't think they'd have as good a chance of survival. And I really want to survive.

Author's Note

So….. Here it is!

To the guest who wanted to use my story: Sorry, but no. This is my baby and I wouldn't feel right leaving her with someone else.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the chapter. I don't necessarily like how the chapter ended, but I've never been good with wrapping things up. Thank you all for supporting me and this story so much!
