Chapter 2

Many Years Ago

"Sasuke!"

"Naruto!"

Two powers collided and time froze. The world turned white and no speck of darkness remained. Just light and the two fighters that hovered in the air wielding powers unimaginable that God might fear them. So powerful was their might that the earth trembled and shattered beneath the crushing force of their combined attacks. The river parted and froze; standing still as time itself stopped all things around them.

Naruto blinked and then the moment was gone, replaced with a bed and a man with long white hair standing over him.

"Do you choose to be a fool or be a shinobi?"

"What…?"

Time shifted, his feet were planted in the soil and before him were two graves with wooden crosses and flowers. One had a large sword behind it.

"Kakashi-sensei…" Naruto looked to his left and there stood Sakura, her pink hair flowing in the wind and her eyes remained transfixed on the grave without a sword. "Were those two correct about ninjas?"

"A ninja isn't supposed to pursue his own goals… Becoming the country's tool is the most important thing. That's the same for the Leaf Village."

"Is that what it really means to become a true ninja…?" Naruto asked. Kakashi had no words for him. "You know what?!" Naruto said with an exasperated sigh of annoyance. "I don't like it!"

"You believe that too?" Sasuke asked. He scratched at the bandage on his cheek.

"Well…" Kakashi started, looking to the grave of with the sword, "Each and every ninja has to live while dealing with that issue. Just like Zabuza and that boy."

"Okay," Naruto grumbled, his face twisting into a look of disgust, "I'm going to be a ninja in my own way."

Kakashi smiled, patting him on the head. "Naruto, why do you want to join the League of Legends?"

The blond turned slowly, his eyes closed in thought. Kakashi's single eye closed tightly and the outline of a smile spread across his face. "I want to go home. I want to see my precious people again."

"How does it feel to open your mind to another?"

"It's nothing new. I've done it before."

Kakashi and the world around him vanished, replaced with darkness and a single witch-light that lit up an old man. He wore robes and carried a pip in his left hand. "You're older than what you appear..." He said finally, alarming the small blond. "You look twelve… maybe younger… yet you're older. You're not under the power of illusion arts your people use. So how can you be so young?"

Naruto smiled sadly. "In the two years I've been here… you're the first to figure that out. I don't know how it happened. But I remember… something. Someone saving me. I remember seeing the birth of the universe and watching as time ran out. I think that's what I saw. That's what he said to me before I woke up."

"You have no memory of this. I would have seen that…"

Naruto gave another shrug. He didn't know how he got here or who the figure was that said that to him. All he truly remembered was pain like nothing he'd felt before then something that was warm but not warm. It came from within.

"Welcome to the League of Legends, Unsung Hero."

Present Day

Naruto jerked up in his bed covered in sweat and gasping for air. It took a moment for him to catch his breath and calm his pounding heart.

The Judgment… why did I dream of it again?

Naruto threw his covers off and stumbled to the bathroom. He flicked the light on, blinding himself momentarily, and then looked at himself in the mirror. How long had he really been here? He always thought three years because time had no meaning to him. Was it longer? Did he simply choose to forget because three years would mark the day he'd return to Konoha? What was the point in lying about it anyways?

He knew his Judgment into the League was two years after he arrived here, but the amount of time since he joined and stopped being a Champion for Ionia was so long ago that he'd already forgotten how long ago it was. He knew Ionia already had warriors in the League by two years if he was remembering it right. But even then… he wasn't sure.

Am I lying simply because it makes me feel better or because I truly don't know?

Naruto splashed water on his face and looked at the whisker marks on his face. His hair was so long that he had to throw it back and put a tie in it. He knew that two weeks ago he said he hadn't gotten it cut in three years… so maybe he'd have joined the League three years ago…?

He gave up on the thought and walked slowly into his room. He leaned against the frame of the door and stared at the back wall. It was covered with papers and pictures. His search for a way home was on the wall. All the powers and magic in the world and there was no way for him to go back with the exception of one. But finding the person was the most difficult part. He was more elusive than Leblanc or Vayne, and he saw them more than his prey. They just always happened to find him.

Naruto didn't doubt that there was another way for him to return home, but it was finding it that was proving the most difficult part. Aside from this one man, Naruto knew that the League had greater knowledge than what they were willing to give out. This was the reason why he opted to start working for them and became a mercenary. All for the belief that in time he could see his friends again.

Naruto threw on some clothes and decided to make an appearance before speaking the council. They had already told him they wanted to have a meeting with him before he left for his next job.

He threw on a plain men's kimono over a umanori hakama, zori and white tabi. He tied his hair back in a ponytail with his bangs covering his face. Naruto idly wondered if today he'd get the time to cut his hair. Naruto only trusted two people to hold a knife behind him and hack away at him. One was his caretaker and the other was Akali. He trusted Akali only because she was neutral to everything he did. If it didn't reflect on them, she didn't care. And with his antics and insane way of fighting it made people either fear ninjas more or keep their guard down around them.

The whisker faced blond was about to grab the knob and walk out when a knock sounded at his door. "Naruto, the council wishes to speak with you."

He deflated instantly. He hadn't eaten yet. The council never called him in this early for anything. But that wasn't his problem. It was the honor of the voice.

Naruto twisted the knob and stared into the golden armored bird woman that was Kayle. She didn't care her weapon and her helmet rested tightly in the crux of her arm. Her wings were almost folded around her form like a cloak. Perhaps that was where her weapon was currently being kept. He wouldn't put it past her to have it hidden somewhere within the protection of her wings.

Kayle's face was twisted into one of disgust. When Naruto had joined the League all those years ago, Kayle was among the first few champions to welcome him. Though she had been distracted by something else at the time, she hadn't be anything more than annoyed to have Naruto in the League and since he was acting as a Champion for Ionia at the time, her displeasure only grew as Naruto proved to be less than of a warrior and more of an idiot. His status as a mercenary didn't help much.

Naruto disliked Kayle because of how zealous she was in her pursuit of justice. Kayle went out of her way to seek justice amongst those that were wronged, no matter how minor the crime. Her main pursuit was against her sister, Morgana. Naruto didn't understand the real reason the two hated each other, but Karma had tried to explain it once to him and he only understood that both sides were in the wrong and nothing more.

Still, Kayle worked for the League whereas Naruto worked for them only as a mercenary for hire when they wanted him for a job. So even if Naruto hated her, he couldn't do anything to her for two reasons. The first was because she worked for the League and the second was because she was a Champion of the League and the rules states that no Champion could fight each other outside of the League.

"Don't I get a chance to eat?"

"No." Kayle unfolded her wings as she turned and began floating away. "Let's go."

"I want to go eat first." Naruto walked in the opposite direction. A hard tug on his collar pulled him up short of another step. "Kayle, I hope you're not holding my collar. I'd hate to break your wrist."

"You can't attack a fellow Champion of the League... but you wouldn't be able to beat me in a fight, Naruto." Naruto tore himself from her. "They want to speak with you about a change in the mission. So let's go."

"Together?"

Kayle's hand went to her sword at her side. Naruto clenched his jaw.

"Fine," he muttered in defeat.

"You can eat after the talks are done."

Naruto laughed at her mentally. As if they'd allowed him to eat after they were done speaking with him.

Kayle led the way to the office for the Council of Equity. When the League was first created, three powerful Summoners created this council in order to both control the League and mandate all magic within Valoran. Through their will all political issues were handled in through their system from within the League of Legends. Though war still happened, magic was no longer used as wildly as it was during the Rune Wars. These three people handled not only the political side of things, but also handling Champion Judgments and balancing their powers within the League to better match the other Champions they had.

There were well over a hundred Champions within the League and most of them were skilled in their own right. While most were skilled in martial arts or long-range warfare, there were some that were more skilled with the mystical side of warfare. These people were often weakened while inside the League to balance out the matches that they were used for. Someone like Annie was a prime example of being weakened within the League. At the age of two she magically ensorcelled a shadow bear – a ferocious denizen of the Petrified Forest outside her colony and turned it into her pet. Now ten, Annie was a force to be reckoned with out of the League with magical powers as great as her parents when they were twice her age.

While the mages of the League were strong, there Champions that were more focused on the physical aspect of fighting that were subjected to the same thing. Jax was a prime example. Shortly after he joined the League of Legends, he brought about a string of victories so long that he broke the previous records for most matches won in just a few weeks. To counter this, High Councilor Heyward Relivash created a special restriction for Jax to fight under. This was something the League had never done before, and something hadn't been done since. Jax, in protest, made his own special conditions by fighting with just a brass lamppost. Neither their sanctions nor his own has affected his winning ways. Since then the League has rescinded his sanctions but Jax has not.

There were many more Champions that were weakened while on the Fields of Justice and while most weren't as heavily burdened as Jax was, Naruto was among the list of people that was. In his first few weeks on the Fields of Justice, Naruto produced several victories with his extraordinary powers and fighting skills. While Naruto hadn't produced as many victories as Jax, Naruto's presence was felt almost instantly. To counter Naruto's almost superhuman abilities the League put several restrictions on his strength, stamina, and speed. While on the Fields of Justice, Naruto was reduced to the speed, strength, and stamina of a well-trained athlete.

Or as Naruto had put it once, "I'm nothing more than a civilian," when explaining how he felt to Irelia about his first match.

Kayle stopped at a pair of large doors. Naruto cleaned his teeth, suddenly becoming aware that he hadn't brushed his teeth or combed his hair.

Kayle knocked on the door before she pushed it open. Naruto stepped in a moment later.

"Uzumaki, Kayle… It's good to see you again."

The two stood at attention in the presence of Vessaria Kolminye, Heyward Relivash and Kiersta Mandrake. These three were the High Councilors of the League of Legends. Relivash was the one that had given Naruto his Judgment all those years ago. He was also the same man that hired Naruto for almost all of the jobs he did for the League.

"It's good to see you again, High Councilor Kiersta. What's the job you want me for?"

Kayle turned sharply towards the blond. "Show some respect!"

"It's quiet alright, Kayle." Kiersta smiled at the whisker faced man. "We regret to inform you that your mission is being changed, Uzumaki. I'm sure you're going to have a few questions concerning this, but those must wait. What we fear is happening is of bigger concern than an exploration mission in Kumungu."

"We received a report of issues growing in in Freljord," Relivash continued where Kiersta left off. He laced his fingers together. "Ashe's tribe has recently been seen missing and another tribe, currently unknown to us, has moved on her grounds. For the last five days we have lost all contact with them. The reports we get make it seem like they're having talks, but we've yet to get anyone out there. We want you to figure out just what is going on."

"On top of all of this, there is even a report saying that Tryndamere's was recently seen moving through Freljord. If this is true then we may have bigger problems than what we fear," Vessaria closed her eyes and a sly smile formed on her lips. "If Tryndamere is going to head towards Ashe's encampment, we fear that war may come to her. Make sure that Ashe and Tryndamere do not fight, no matter what. Our rules bare no compromise."

"What would Tryndamere have to gain by going to Ashe's encampment?" Naruto folded his arms. "You do know that Ashe doesn't care for me? Tryndamere doesn't like me much either, but Ashe has a bigger reason than what Tryndamere ever could."

"You're referring to the last incident in Freljord?" Relivash questioned. Naruto nodded slowly. Kayle looked between the two questioningly. "That incident is frozen, Kayle. Don't bother asking." She tensed and glanced back at the blond. "However, Naruto, if this turns out to be something else entirely, we're sending Kayle with you to act as a speaker. Between the two of you she has more political understanding than you. No offense."

"Offense taken, but understood."

"I'm working with him?" Kayle's face was a mixture of hatred and surprise.

"Yes," Vessaria answered tightly. "I understand that you two do not get along. However, any other person we could send or hire either doesn't want to go or currently occupied with something else. However, you are the best chance we have if this meeting is nothing more than an alliance to challenge a greater power. If that is the case, we ask that you speak on our behalf and reason with them if they attend to start a fight."

Kayle and Naruto glared at each other in turn. Naruto was the first to turn away.

"Is there anything else?" No one spoke. "I'll go get my gear and get something to eat before we go, Kayle. Meet me in the cafeteria in two hours."

The golden armored woman nodded slowly as the youth departed.

"Take care of him," Relivash told her. "I'm hesitant to tell you this, but he is not the man you think he is. Perhaps he's even more of a deceiver than that of LeBlanc. He is the man who regrets and the man who forgets. I would suggest you remember our rules. No doubt he won't if he gets too riled up. Keep him in line."

The winged woman tightened her jaw. "I understand."

Naruto was back in his room within ten minutes. He put his back against the door and banged his head against it in anger as he fought off the desire to scream and thrash his room. It would server no good to him, but it was so hard to not destroy his place and scream.

Finally, after a minute of banging his head he settled on screaming and punching the floor. A large crack formed with the first and with the second he punched a hole in it.

Why? He punched the floor again, this time lighter and closed his eyes. Why am I being put together with Kayle? They know we can't work together from our matches together. So even if they know this, they should never put us together for anything. Punching the floor again, Naruto finally pushed himself up and wondered to his closet to change his clothing. Tossing some of his clothing out on the bed, he undressed and slowly put on the clothes he set out.

Naruto had long since given up wearing the same clothing for all things and used different weapons and gear depending on what he was needed for. While his younger self would have used the same things over and over again, Naruto had grown up enough and learned enough from being on the battle fields to know what to use and wear for each engagement he was sent out on.

Over the years Naruto had procured many different weapons and gear. While he fought on the Fields of Justice Naruto opted to wear something that he would wear back home. His casual clothing was something simple while here at the League. When he was back at Ionia he wore more former clothing because of what his caretaker had requested he wear. But while he did jobs here he wore pieces of armor from he'd taken from Demacia or Noxus and wore clothing he took from Ionia and Piltover. He looked like a wanderer. His weapons were even something he'd taken from another place. His sword was a straight sword with a hollowed circle to lessen the weight at the base with the end ending in a point. He wore the weapon on his back right under the long shield he carried. Both were weapons he attained from working with Viktor in Zaun.

Naruto threw a tattered cloak over his form before leaving his room.

In the time it took from getting dressed to getting to the cafeteria he had thankfully calmed down and relished the silence. What few Champions were already here eating ate in perfect silence. Naruto made a quick order and waited for his food to arrive. When it finally did, he leaned back in his chair and began eating slowly.

"Ramen? Again?"

A sly smile formed on Naruto's face. "I'm leaving for a job again. Might as well have it before I leave since I have no idea on when I'll be back." The blond shifted his gaze slightly to the left to see a brass lamppost resting against the table. Jax yanked out a chair and sat down beside the blond.

"So you're eating ramen for breakfast? Didn't Shen break you of that?"

"He broke me of eating it all the time. So I only eat it three times a day if possible."

"That's the same as eating it every day, Naruto!"

"But I don't eat it every day. I only eat it three times a day if possible. I used to eat it five times a day back home. Besides, what Shen doesn't know doesn't hurt him."

"I could tell him."

"I could tell him too! It's just that I don't think I'd enjoy him yelling at me if I told him. Is it wrong that I find it more fun to have him find out through other people?"

"No." Jax shifted his gaze to the weapon Naruto had resting against his chair. It was nothing Jax hadn't seen before. It was five feet from point to pommel. The sheath was black metal and a golden band at the top of it. The handle of the blade was metal as well with leather wrapping it. "How come you don't use that on the Fields of Justice?" He looked to the blond for permission and then took it.

"I'm not good with it." Naruto picked up the bowel and downed the rest of the liquid inside. Wiping the remains away he continued, "I only carry it because an armed traveler attracts less attention than an unarmed traveler. Besides, I do like learning new things."

Jax unsheathed the weapon slowly, admiring the blade, and then sheathing it again. "I can respect that. But you know it'd be easier for you learn it without consequences to your own life. So why not fight with it there than out in the real world where one mistake can lead to your death?"

The whisker faced young man leaned back in his chair while being deep in thought. "How else will I learn how to fight without consequences? Wouldn't it be better to understand that one mistake can lead to my death? But it's not like I care. I only use it because it makes the maker happy."

"Oh?! And who made it for you?"

A smile touched his lips as he stood up. "A good friend who says I saved him. I don't think I did, but that's just me." Naruto took back the weapon and shield and then strapped them to his back. "Perhaps I'll start using them on the Fields of Justice. I'm sure it'd make him happy to see me use it there. Not sure it goes with my outfit I use though."

"Well you could always change it up. If you got rid of all the armor but the gauntlets and greaves and got something to match the black metal, it'd work out for you. Hey! I'll help you when you get back."

"As inviting as that sounds, I think I'll pass, Jax." Naruto started walking.

"When you coming back to Ionia?" Jax called out. Naruto gave a wave. The masked fighter for hire snickered. The man who regrets or forgets, huh. More like the man who runs away. Jax sighed and ordered a drink.

Naruto passed Kayle and with an annoyed grunt he said, "Let's go before I change my mind about this job," then departed without looking back.
