"What?" I frowned. "You mean, you're changing the code?"
Bramblestar nodded. "Yes. Why do you look so angry?"
I clenched my teeth. "StarClan wrote the code! You have no right to change it!"
I stormed off to my den, where Briarlight was doing her exercises.
"Whats wrong?" she asked.
I shrugged. "Bramblestar was talking to me. I got frustrated with him."
Briarlight pressed against me. "What did he say?"
I shrugged again, my fur prickling at Briarlight's touch. "You'll find out soon enough. It's nothing important."
"Okay." Briarlight went back to her exercises. I felt my heart slow.
"I'm gonna get some fresh-kill," Briarlight meowed. She dragged herself to the pile, and came back with a plump sparrow. "Do you want some, Jayfeather?"
Surprisingly, I found myself sharing the sparrow with her, glancing up occasionally to make sure no one came by. After a while, I stopped looking, and just enjoyed talking with Briarlight. I didn't notice that Bumblestripe had stopped to stare.
"What are you doing?" he gasped. "Medicine cats aren't supposed to mate! And that's my sister!"
Briarlight and I glared at him, my pelt hot with embarrassment.
"We're not mates, Bumblestripe," Briarlight growled. "But we spend so much time together in this den, so we might as well be friends."
"Okay." Bumblestripe gave me a last suspicious glance before padding away.
"That was embarrassing," I mumbled.
Briarlight nodded. "I hope he doesn't tell Foxleap." She nodded toward where the two young warriors were talking with Icecloud and Ivypool.
I nodded. "StarClan forbid it."
