The alarm clock blared as the rare sun rays flashed from Bella's window. I groaned as Bella slammed the alarm clock, stopping the sound. I looked beside me and saw her rubbing her eyes. I smiled and got up to stretch my back.
"Hey Bella, could you pick me up for school today?" I asked. She nodded and yawned, waving a goodbye and going to the bathroom. I went out and met face to face with Bella's dad, Charlie. We stared at each other for a couple of minutes.
"Hey."
"Hey."
"Who are you?"
"Bella's best friend."
"Oh, okay."
"Yeah, bye," then I dashed out of their house. That by far, was the most awkward conversations I've ever been in and hopefully, the last. I went back in my house—which is just beside Bella's—and ran to my room, doing my morning routine and changing into a fitted shirt, a blue jacket that was too big for me—probably past my fingertips—skinny jeans, and my worn out sneakers. I then took my nerd glasses (GO BIG FRAMES!) and placed them on my face, its black frames contrasting my deep blue eyes, then mine and Bella's friendship necklace.
It was half a heart with angel wings, with 'Isabella and Camille' engraved behind both necklaces. When put together, it formed a heart with wings. At the front of the necklace, it had 'best friends forever' engraved with fancy penmanship.
On Bella's necklace, the edges of the heart had sapphire rhinestones, my favorite gemstone. On the other hand, mine had topaz rhinestones, Bella's favorite gemstone. Coincidentally, the rhinestones on our necklaces were our birthstones, sapphire for September and topaz for November. I smiled and took my backpack, running outside and greeting my aunt in the process.
"Wow, you're fast," Bella greeted as I appeared on her doorstep. I grinned, showing off my pearly white teeth. Not to brag or anything, but I am quite proud of my teeth.
"You have new glasses?" she asked. I smiled and walked with her to her car. It was old but cool. The paint was a bit rusty but it's a fine car. I never really cared about automobiles since I never really did understand all those engine-gear-shift-park stuff.
"I wanted a new frame for my glasses and I wanted a big one for no reason," I replied. She nodded and went inside her car as I went beside her, forcing my feet to touch the floor, which I did successfully! Bella looked amused when I was squirming to get my feet to touch the floor of her truck.
"One of the perks of being a 4'10 sixteen year old, huh?" she said, sarcasm evident in her tone. I rolled my eyes playfully and stuck my tongue out. She chuckled and started the truck, hearing the engine roar to life.
My normally playful mood switched to that of nervousness and insecurity. Bella, being my best friend and all that, sensed this and gave me a reassuring smile. She kept one hand on the steering wheel then the other on my shoulder, squeezing it sisterly and comfortingly. I smiled then sighed. These are the times I wished I really did have a blood-related sister who would go with me here in Forks. I know this may sound pretty selfish, but there are times that Bella's comfort wasn't enough for me.
Every time that I think of that, I feel like I'm some sort of creature wanting to hog out all of the attention around me. But at the same time, I despised being the center of attention, sometimes being like Bella who's the suffer-in-silence type of chick.
"I wonder if there will be some eyes zeroed on me. They'll probably look away because they just saw a plain Jane come," I joked. Bella sighed at placed her other hand—which was previously on my shoulder—back on the steering wheel, continuing to drive us to Forks High School.
"You have absolutely no idea."
Bella was right when she said I had absolutely no idea, because the moment—heck, probably the second I came out of the car squirming a lot, I never knew I could actually squirm much more than how I am now!
All eyes in the parking lot were zeroed on me, the new girl—or possibly freak, loner, wallflower, just like in Phoenix−of the school… in the middle of the year!
Forks High was a brick-walled, maroon-colored, botanic-filled school with matching buildings. According to Bella, the school had much less than 500 students—358 to be exact, turning to 359 now that I'm enrolled here. I began blushing furiously when I saw all eyes filled with curiosity—and other emotions I couldn't pinpoint—following my every move as I swiftly walked to Bella's side.
"Yo Arizona!" someone called behind us, probably referring to Bella. We turned and saw a baby-faced, blond boy. He was tall, probably 5'11, with blue eyes and a sheepish grin on his face. He was good looking, but he's nothing compared to the blinding beauty of my best friend's boyfriend, a.k.a. Edward Cullen.
Speaking of that Adonis replica, he wasn't here yet. I tugged Bella's shirt and looked up at her as she turned to me. I tiptoed and cupped my hand by her ear.
"Where's Edweird Cullen, Bells?" I whispered.
"They'll be here," she replied and gave my head a light pat. I glowered at her. How dare she think I am a dog… meh, why should I care?
"Who's this?" one of the people with blondie boy—a brunette—asked.
"She's Camille Brandon, the new student," Bella answered. Go Bella, answer away because I do not want to deal any questions or other stuff at the moment.
"Cam," Bella called. "This is Jessica, Mike, Angela and Eric."
"Hi," I squeaked. Okay, I am so not good at socializing.
"Hey, you're tiny," Jessica—the brunette—pointed out as she surveyed my petite stature.
I rolled my eyes inwardly, wanting to flip her out at the moment. Duh, of course I know I'm small, you dimwit! You think I'm blind?
"Gee, I never noticed that before," I mumbled to myself, sarcasm coating my voice. Bella—hearing my sarcastic comment—nudged me lightly.
"Be nice," she mouthed while her other friends didn't notice our tiny conversation. I sighed and nodded, drawing a halo above my head.
At the corner of my eye, I spotted a Volvo enter the premises of the school. The driver came out and was revealed to be—drumroll, please!—Edward Cullen. Why am I not surprised?
Bella—almost immediately—forgot about my presence and walked briskly to her unnaturally gorgeous boyfriend.
"Are you kidding me?" I muttered to myself as I walked to the couple making googly eyes at each other.
Sigh, this is going to be a long day.
