Chapter 2: Nightmares

Max PoV

I was running. No. Sprinting, through the city streets. I pushed past people, ignoring the shouts of 'Hey!' and 'Watch where you're going!' I couldn't even glance behind me to see if he was closer. I just had to keep running. I knew that once I got outside the city I could fly and he would have less chance of catching me.

As I ran I chanced a glance behind me. He was catching up! I was so surprised to see how close he had gotten; I forgot to look where I was going. I tripped over one of the stalls in a market and sent the whole thing crashing down. It took a few others with it. I desperately tried to scramble to my feet before he could catch me. I couldn't move. The top of the stall had fallen on my legs.

He chuckled as he approached me, strolling like he was walking through the park. I glared at him and he grinned at me.

"Got yourself in a right pickle there, haven't you Max," he taunted, "Fang's not here to save you, your Flock are being held prisoner by your own doing, and," he leaned closer, his breath making me retch, "I get to take you back to the School. We're all going home, Max. Come on. Your Flock's waiting. That is if they're not already dead."

I spat at him, hitting him directly in the eye. He growled and snapped his teeth right in front of my face. He raised a huge claw and brought it towards my face. I squeezed my eyes shut.

I felt a hand on my cheek. A hand, not a huge hairy paw. My eyes snapped open and I jerked in my seat.

I was in a seat. I looked around. I was on a plane. Oh, yeah! We were flying to Forks. I sighed and closed my eyes again. It was just a dream. Then I remembered about the hand on my cheek.

I opened my eyes, cautiously, and saw Fang looking down at me. My head was on his shoulder, his arm around me, and his hand on my cheek.

Fang frowned ever so slightly and wiped away a tear that I hadn't noticed.

"You okay?" He asked.

I nodded, too tired to talk.

"You had the nightmare again."

It wasn't a question.

Okay, here's the deal. Ever since we left 'The Lerner's School for Mutant Freaks', as I called it, I had been having the same nightmare. Every time I went to sleep I would have the nightmare. Every time I slept I got closer to being captured. Originally, I had got away easily but every night he would get that little bit closer to me. Every night I was a little bit more scared to go to sleep.

I know you're all like 'Who is he?' and 'Why won't you say?', but the thing is I can't remember who he is when I wake up. I know exactly what he said and when he said it, but I can't remember who he is.

"He caught me," I whispered to Fang. His arm tightened around me, "He was about to hit me when you woke me up."

I turned my face into Fang's shoulder, hating how weak and pathetic I sounded.

"Can you remember?" I didn't need to ask what he meant.

"No." I said annoyed.

The plane bounced suddenly and I looked up at Fang in alarm. He just smirked.

"We've landed," he said, "That's why I woke you up."

The plane stopped moving and Angel and Nudge were out of their seats as soon as the signs were off.

"Okay guys. We're getting a cab to take us to our house. We're supposed to be met there by someone who will have the keys. They're called Billy or something. Okay?" They all nodded as we stepped off the plane. I yawned and felt like lying down and falling asleep in the middle of the stairs.

"Max, we're here! Can you believe we're actually here! I wonder what Forks is like? Is our house nice? Can me and Angel share a room? How big is it? Is the school nice? Are we actually going to school? Don't you think that would be fun? You could meet up with girls your age and go on dates with cute boys and-"

"Nudge!" Fang said sharply. I had barely noticed her say anything at all. I was practically sleepwalking. Fang seemed to notice as he took charge, getting us through customs and finding a taxi.

On the way, he made sure they all had the story right.

"So our story is…" Fang said.

"We grew up together in a care home," Angel started.

"Max's Mom ran it and she basically looks after us all," Gazzy continued.

"Max's brother, Ari fell ill and we all had to move out," Nudge put in.

"We moved in with Jeb while Ari was sick," Iggy joined in.

"Then we started travelling around and we went to all the places we've actually been to," Angel took her turn again.

"Then Ari died and we went to Antarctica to help some scientists," Gazzy grinned.

"And now we've decided to settle down for a while" Nudge said happily.

"We've had a lot of excitement and want to relax," Iggy was casual.

"And so we are moving to a quiet place like Forks," Fang finished quietly, "Names?"

"I'm Angelina," Angel.

"I'm Jason," Gazzy.

"I'm Tiffany-Krystal!" Nudge.

"I'm James," Iggy.

"Good. I'm Nick. Max is Max, and our cab's here." Fang took my hand and pulled me over to the cab as it drew up, gave the driver directions and we all piled in.

I sat in the back of the cab, with Angel on my knee, and fell asleep.
