A.N. Me and my friend couldn't believe that just a few hours after we had published the story we already had 1 you and here's the chapter. (EDITED CHAPTER)
Chapter 2
By eight in the evening I am walking with Haymitch to Peeta's house. We were meant to have dinner at his house so this was actually the right moment to do it.
We're both quiet, him trying not fall on his face because of all the wine he had drunk before and me making thousands of scenarios and dialogues in my head on how to tell Peeta the truth. I don't know what to expect, my hands are shaking and feel clammy from my nervousness.
We walk to his door and I knock on it. A few seconds later, he opens it with a big smile spread across his face that makes me be less nervous. He always has the gift to make people feel welcome and safe just by one look. He's wearing a tight navy blue shirt that shows off his muscles from carrying heavy bags of flour and jeans with a white apron wrapped around his waist. It takes a while for us to come in since we just stand there, in silence, looking at each other. I just keep thinking 'How in the hell did we get here?' and 'How did I not notice him before?'. I can't look away from him, I'm trapped in his bright blue eyes. A clear of a throat interrupts out trance and the moment is broken just as quick as it started.
"Can we come in already? You two have been staring at each other for ages and I'm starving!" says Haymitch rolling his eyes while making his way inside the house.
"Of course. Where are my manners? Come in my guests." says Peeta with a Capitol accent.
"Thank you!" I say trying to imitate Effie as to the best of my skills.
"You welcome, my lady"
"End the mushy stuff, it-s making me sick!" groans Haymitch while I lower my face to stare at the floor and try not to blush.
"What's for dinner? Smells good" I say after a bit, trying to change the subject.
"Lamb stew with dried plums." says Peeta with a grin on his face. I smile at the mention of my favourite dish. " I actually just finish so we can start to eat already"
We go to the dining room to seat on the table and see that Peeta has already put the cutlery on the table and even has lit some candles to give it a more formal atmosphere. I fill my plate with food noticing that I'm extremely hungry, almost as much as I had been in the games. I remember my mother telling a pregnant women that it was normal to feel very hungry all the time so I guess it's because of the pregnancy.
"Katniss, I heard you have something to tell Peeta..." I glare at Haymitch while Peeta looks at me curiously.
"Peeta, I need to tell you something. And I need you to not freak out okay?" Now he just looks confused and fully worried. Poor guy! He probably thinks I'm dying or something.
He nods with all the certainty in the world. He really doesn't know whats coming.
"I'm pregnant." There it is I said it. I had to do it quick or I wouldn't do it at all. I look down immediately
"Are you really?" I hear him say. I can't recognize his tone and since I can't see his face I don't know what reaction he's having.
I respond "yes" Peeta puts his hand on my chin and makes me look at him. His eyes brighter than ever before but his faces his still serious and stiff.
"Are you mad?" I ask.
His face softens and gives me a sweet lopsided smile. He says "Of course not, I'm happy. No. I'm more than happy, I'm ecstatic. I don't believe we're going to have a baby, Katniss. I love you so much!" He says hugging me so tight I almost loose my breath.
At that moment, I can't stop the tears from falling from my eyes and the smile of appearing on my face. This is definitely not what I wanted but maybe it's what I need. A reason to fight back,
Suddenly, Peeta releases me, kneels down and puts his hands in my belly "I love you too, baby" he says with the biggest smile.
"I guess you finally put the bun in the oven" Haymitch calls out from his chair. I almost forgot about him.
"I guess so!" Peeta says laughing.
We go to the living room and sit on the sofa. We talk about everything while the TV is on. We stop when we see someone we have become to know closely but not specially good reasons. Caeser Flickerman is dressed in a bright lime green suit and his hair is a strong pink colour, as usual he beams as he possesses every bit of happiness in the world. He probably does.
"Hello!" he says to the camera "The time has come to know what this year's games gonna be. As you all know, this year we celebrate the third Quarter Quell so let's pass the emission to President Snow."
Next thing we see is President Snow sitting in a big chair and holding a paper with the number 75 on the back. "Now we honor our third Quarter Quell, the 75th anniversary as a reminder to the rebels that even the strongest among them cannot overcome the power of the Capitol, the male and female tributes are to be reaped from the existing pool of victors."
At first, I don't understand what he means the words get all mixed in my head but then I realize what he just said. I'm going back into the arena. We are going back into the iron. Me and the father of my unborn child. I'm certain Peeta won't let Haymitch and me go back into the arena together. He loves Haymitch as much as I do and he has become part of our family. Peeta also wants to go to the arena to protect me and the baby.
That's what he will do. I will try to protect him too.
Because that's what we do.
We protect each other.
