"Why?" She asked when she pulled away.
"You are not a pig." And with that he went to his room to lay down, feeling slightly nauseated. He didn't believe he was in love and yet he knew it to be true.
That night she came in and lay down beside him.
He awoke. She had on pjs that were plaid and loose, and she lay down in the curve of his body. He asked,
"Aren't you afraid I will strangle you at night while you're asleep?"
"I hold you to your actions. If you think this way, I will trust you. If your future actions portray good things, I will live and you will be happy. But if your future actions portray negative things, I will be dead and you will be cold heartless and indifferent. Your choice." The next ten minutes both were silent. Slowly, Carrie turned we body to face him and she loosened his tie. She pulled it off. He was fast asleep, probably still tired after his sickness.
He felt hands on his throat. He awoke, but didn't open his eyes as the hands loosened his tie. They then were unbuttoning his white shirt. Was he frigid and innocent? No, and he had never had a fling either, as the codes as an agent required a focused attention, one that didn't have time for...affairs. But he did know that some humans did nothing but have sex. He was sure she was not one of these. But he did know that sex mostly involved full nudity. Something he couldn't do at the moment. He knew what happened when an agent program was exiled. Their bodies went through an acidic stage where they have no skin abdomen to feet. And so Smith grabbed her hands and stopped them at the navel. Red scarring around the navel he protected by his shirt, but this was one of the first times he'd ever been near another human being with this much skin showing. She didn't have the lustful light in her eyes, just a kind gesture. She probably thought he never took off the suit. He pulled the corners of his mouth into what he thought was a smile. He hugged her close. She would be safe.
A few nights later, after days of peace and mostly curling up in bed or on a sofa, Smith woke with a panicked yell. Mr. Anderson was close by, he could hear him, see him... Carrie awoke, startled by his noise. She asked what was wrong. He told her to get into a closet. He hurried to get his shirt buttoned and his coat and socks and shoes back on. How did Anderson find him?! Smith pulled himself together. He was the enemy. Smith had to stay calm, superior. Smith pulled his black sunglasses on and walked to the apartment door.
Three small equal knocks tapped on the door. Anderson had no weapons in his hands. Smith produced a gun by transforming a plastic cup quickly. Smith held the gun in his right hand and opened the door slowly with his left, hiding the gun.
Smith saw Anderson's serious face, and smirked.
"Mr. Anderson, to what do I owe this displeasure?"
"What are you doing here, Smith?"
"Enjoying the company of an empty apartment whilst enjoying my time of exile alone. Ah yes. I am not an agent anymore."
"You're lying."
Smith pulled out his wire with his left hand and showed the human the truth.
"So you see, Mr. Anderson, I was telling the truth." Anderson leaned down to look at the wire. When his head was at perfect height, Smith put the gun in a nano second to his head. Anderson froze.
"Now leave, Mr. Anderson. I wish to be left alone. I am not going to cause any trouble for a very long time, so you can take yourself away from this place and go back to Morpheous and tell him I'm not busy planning to take over the damn world!" Smith gritted his teeth. He pushed his gun into the human's head gently and then released him, slamming the door quickly as Neo leaned back. Neo was puzzled. It wasn't like Smith, no, not at all. He decided the oracle would have some answers. She always did.
Smith hurried to the closet and opened it. Inside the beautiful girl was shivering and tears were on her face.
"Who was that?"
"An old enemy. He won't bother us. I hope. Come on, it's no good staying up. I will be watching for him."
"I was so afraid for you."
"I love you." He whispered, the words he thought would never come from his mouth did. He set the gun on the nightstand, and watched over her until she fell fast asleep. He felt Anderson leave and eventually he fell asleep.
Neo reached the oracle's place and entered. She was in the kitchen holding her head in her hands.
"What's wrong?" Neo asked, concerned and bewildered.
"It's Smith. Oh, you have a call."
"What-" Neo's phone began to ring. He picked up and heard Link saying,
"Neo, there was someone with Smith, there is now, right next to each other. Something's up."
"Ok. Tell Morpheous I'm at the oracle's. I'll call when I need an exit."
"K." And Neo hung up.
"Smith is either holding a hostage or..."
"The or is what concerns me, Neo. You see, the future changed when you killed Smith. He went and was exiled. He came back here, and then I don't know where he went."
"He's currently in an apartment."
"I know. I'm afraid for him Neo." The oracle looked off in space.
"What?!" Neo looked confused.
"Smith has gained something he is inevitably going to lose. Something he now cares very much about. I fear for him, because if he looses what he has gained, we will all suffer greatly."
"You're saying Smith has fallen in love?"
"Programs can, you know. But he has confused himself, he will probably become a corrupt system if he continues, for he is already glitching away from his code. Smith has turned away from the path initially carved for him. The path to destruction. He had chosen the right door, as you did. He chose to save the one he cares most about rather than doing what his purpose demands. You have much in common, you and Smith. You both have someone to lose."
"So what are we gonna do about it?"
"I don't know. You certainly can kill them both, Smith is completely venerable. But then, so are you. You have Trinity and he has-" a ding came from the oven. The oracle got up.
"Cookies are done."
"Oracle, I need answers, not riddles this time. Smith is still dangerous. What are we supposed to do. Leave him alone?!"
"Have you ever heard of the Merovingian? Remarkable exile, he loves information. He has put himself so far on top, hosts his own parties, etcetera, that no one bothers to deal with him. But if someone were to deal with Smith, then the wicked witch would be dead." The statement was slightly puzzling. The oracle sat down and lit a cigarette.
"You want an answer. You have a choice; go find out the truth from Smith and eventually kill him and the one he cares for, or leave him be.
I will not say anymore, for our time is up." And she ignored him. He thought for a moment and then called Link.
Neo exited the Matrix, puzzled. He said nothing to any of the Nebuchanezzer, no matter what they protested.
He mused over what to do. It drove him crazy to think Smith would ever stop being evil. Smith hated Neo with hell's passion. But when Smith had that gun to his head, he didn't shoot. He just wanted to be left alone.
And that concerned Neo the most.
