At first there's nothing but the slick feel of blood.

The immense fear that twisted deep in his gut, traveled up to his heart and squeezed. Suddenly the pads of his fingers detected something. Sam's body stiffened; ignited by adrenaline, as he scrambled closer.

Thud.

He sobbed hot tears of joy at the faint flutter of Dean's heartbeat; delicate like a butterfly in a glass box. Weak but there.

A beautiful glimmer of hope filled Sam with it's warm glow. A lone star embedded in vast stretch of velvet sky.

Dean was alive. He was going to stay that way too.
