Christmas Island, 3212

A seven-year-old hedgehog woke up in his bed. He looked over at the clock on the nightstand. It was half-past noon. What was he doing here? Then he remembered. The boat ride over the lake of rings. Tripping and falling into the murky depths. And then everything went black. He noticed an older, white-haired hedgehog working on a laptop next to him. He looked up at the child and pushed his glasses up his nose.

"Oh good. You're awake."

"Uncle Chuck? How long was I out?"

"About two days. I was able to stabilize you. You should be fine."

"Cool. Can I get up now?"

"Oh, no no no, my boy. You need at least another days rest."

"Than can you tell me the story?"

"Oh alright. Now let's see," Chuck said stroking his mustache. "Their once was a man from Nantucket."

"Not that story!" the young hedgehog said with a scowl.

"Come on. You should get some rest."

"After the story! Please...?"

"Alright, alright. Once upon a time, your mother, father and me lived on a beautiful island. And on that island was the Kingdom of Acorn. A beautiful city full of happy creatures like us. One day, your mother became pregnant a baby boy."

"Me!" the child said with a grin.

"Yep. We were all very happy… until one day when an evil scientist attacked our city and forced us to flea. I promised your father I would take care of your dad your mother. Me and the other survivors escaped here. But your mother injuries were too much for her,and she died in childbirth. But I promised her that one day, we would come back to Westside Island and save everyone."

"If I were older, I would kick that evil guys butt!"

"I'm sure you would. But for now, you must rest."

Chuck turned out the light and walked out. Before closing the door, he looked back at his nephew.

"Goodnight, Uncle Chuck."

"Goodnight, Sonic."

The Next Day…

Sonic walked outside with Uncle Chuck close behind.

"Hey, Uncle Chuck! How 'bout a race!"

"What? You ready to lose again? I may be slowing down a bit, but there's still a little life left in the ol' afterburners."

"Just you wait! I'll beat you this time!"

Chuck got into a ready position next to Sonic.

"Alrighty then, son. Ready… Set… GO!"

The moment he said go, Chuck was blown off his feet and a loud noise left a ringing in his ears. He looked up to see that Sonic was no longer there, but a trail a blue energy left a streak down the beach.

Skidding to a stop, Sonic ran back to his Uncle, who was dusting himself off.

"Uncle Chuck! Did you see that? Did you see how fast I was going?"

Chuck just stared at his nephew, lost in thought.

Eight Years Later…

Sonic ran down the beach with his delivery bag in hand. Uncle Chuck's Diner was the most popular eatery in the village of refugees who had been held up on Christmas Island and Sonic was more than happy to be his Uncles delivery boy.

I mean, who else can get your food to your house two minutes after you order it?

Uncle Chuck had blamed Sonic's new-found speed on his dip in the lake of rings. Not only were rings the major currency on the planet Möbius, but were also a major energy source. Just one can power an entire house for up to two weeks. Chuck theorized that Sonic had absorbed a massive amount of energy at the bottom of the lake before he managed to climb back out.

Sonic smiled. Today was his fifteenth birthday and he was excited. Uncle Chuck always got the best gifts, and he was sure that this delivery was just a way for him to get everything ready.

Sure enough, Sonic stepped through the front door to find Chuck holding a blue birthday cake with a big number 15 on it. The small family sat down together and talked and laughed as they stuffed themselves with cake.

When they were both full, Chuck stood up and cleared his throat. "You know, that's not your only present."

Chuck used to be the royal scientist, and even after the kingdom fell, he liked to keep busy and tinker in a large shed that sat behind their beachside house. Chuck pushed the large doors open, stepped back and grinned at Sonic. In the shed was a sleek, red biplane with white and silver trimming.

"A PLANE?!"

"Yep. You always told me how much you wanted to travel, so I figured today was the perfect day!"

"You'll really be okay without me here?"

"Sonic, I'll be fine. Go have your adventure."

Sonic finished packing his things into the Tornado (as Sonic had decided to name his new plane) and gave his uncle a hug.

"Now come back and visit, ya hear?"

"Thanks. I will."

Sonic hopped into the cockpit and started the engine. He had never flown a plane before, but Chuck had given him a brief rundown of how the controls work. The plane shot down the beach and lifted into the air. Sonic let out a "Woo-hoo!"

As he flew off towards his next adventure.
