It's New Year's Eve. Troy is spending it with his family in a ski lodge.

Mom: I laid out something nice for you to wear

Troy: but, mom, I don't want to go to some lame kids party

Mom: I'm sure you'll be okay

Troy reluctantly puts on the outfit and heads to the party. It's held in the small, living room type room off the lodge's main entrance. There are plenty of kids there his age, 16/17. There's a huge stage in the middle of the room and a dj taking requests for karaoke. There's already a couple up on stage singing. Troy looks around for someone to talk to. He spots a dark haired girl, sitting in the corner. She seems lost and scared. Troy, being the gentleman that he is, tries to go over to her. But before he can be forced in the small stage to sing. Troy thinks to himself, "i can't sing."

Suddenly, he notices a blonde on stage with him. He notices it's Sharpay from school. She is very confident in her singin abilities and pats his shoulder.

Sharpay: don't worry, you'll be okay

Troy: Are you sure? I really can't sing

Sharpay: yes, are you ready?

The song starts. It's called the start of something new. Troy has never heard this song before, so he reads the monitor. "Living in my own world, didn't understand..." Troy realizes that no one is booing him, so he thinks I must be pretty good. He starts to relax. Sharpay and Troy's voices mesh together well and soon they are putting on an almost concert for everyone else there. Soon they are done.

Sharpay: you did great.

She is smiling, happy. Troy smiles back.

Troy: Thank you, so did you, but you do this every year in the school play.

Sharpay's brother, Ryan, soon joins them and they start to chat. Troy has never really spoken to neither Sharpay nor Ryan. Troy again notices the brunette. He excuses himself from Sharpay and Ryan and walks over to her.

Troy: hi, what's your name?

Gabriella: Gabriella

Troy: so what brings you out here

Gabriella: just skiing with my mom.

Just them everyone starts to count down to midnight and the new year.

Everyone: 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Happy new year!!!!

Gabriella: I have to go. We have to get up early tomorrow.

Troy: okay, maybe I'll see you around.

Gabriella walks away.
