Lily Luna Potter: Keep The Demons At Bay
I usually hate mornings. In fact, I almost always hate mornings. But today was different. Because today was my first proper day at Hogwarts.
Jumping out of bed, I glanced over at Destiny. She was asleep, her dark hair sticking to her face. Grinning, I rummaged in my trunk, taking out my clothes for the day. I grimaced at the knee length skirt, but put it on anyway. Pulling up my wavy hair into a high pony-tail, I headed down the stairs to the Common Room.
You can imagine my shock when I saw Scorpius Malfoy sitting in an armchair in the corner, staring out of the window. When he heard me, he spun around, his mouth forming a sneer.
'Come to laugh at me Potter' he said distastefully.
'No' I replied bluntly.
He raised a perfectly arched eyebrow, his surprise clearly showing on his aristocratic face. I couldn't help but be drawn to his eyes, which were a stormy grey. Even though it pained me to say it, he was very good looking. He ran a hand through his perfectly styled hair before saying 'I don't know how to tell them.' I figured by them he meant his parents. This surprised me because his mum had always come across as a nice person. He must have seen the confusion on my face, as he elaborated.
'My father, although he's better now, still thinks that it's a disgrace not to be in Slytherin, as does my grandfather,' he said, as though admitting a terrible crime.
'Oh' I said stupidly.
I was about to continue when he interrupted.
'Saying that, they probably already know. Lyra will have told them.'
There was a very distinct tone in his voice as he glared at his hand.
'What about Lyra?' I asked, curiosity overriding my fear of going to far.
'She was always the favourite. The oldest child. The epitome of a pure-blood' he spat.
I sat down beside him and slowly put an arm around his shoulder. Although he flinched slightly, he did not move away.
'I know it's hard to face them,' I said softly 'but sometimes you have to face your demons to overcome them.
With that I stood up and headed downstairs to the owlery. I needed some alone time, and I think he did too.
When I got down to the owlery, I took out my quill and parchment and started to write a letter home.
Dear Mum, Dad and Teddy,
I got put in Gryffindor!
I miss you a lot, and I think James and Al do as well. The food here is great. I have already made 3 new friends on top of Frank and Hugo. Their names are Destiny Finnigan-Thomas and Amy and Alex Brand. Destiny is in Gryffindor with me, while Amy is in Slytherin and Alex in Ravenclaw. Scorpius Malfoy was sorted into Gryffindor. I saw him in the common room when I came down to write this. He was the only one there, and I talked to him for a bit. He told me he was scared to tell his dad and grandfather about his sorting. I think they both still believe in pure-blood supremacy. Can't say I'm surprised.
I hope everything is ok at home. How is auror training going for Teddy. I hope Padfoot is ok, as well as Mia.
I've got to go down to breakfast soon, so am sending this off with Athena. Please reply soon.
Lots of love,
Lily xoxo
Grinning in satisfaction, I called Athena, my snowy owl, and attached it to her leg. Watching her fly away, I grinned before starting up for breakfast.
Breakfast was a hurried affair, especially for a certain Finnigan-Thomas, who appeared about 5 minutes before it ended. Looking at our schedules, I saw we had Potions with Professor Zabini followed by History Of Magic with Professor Binns. I grinned at potions, but grimaced at History Of Magic. Beside me, Destiny groaned beside me and banged her head on the table.
As we headed down to the dungeon, I saw Scorpius walking down the steps with his head bowed. Whispering to Destiny that I'd be right back, I ran to catch up with him. As I drew close, I saw silent tears streaming down his face and a black bruise around his eye. When he noticed me, he turned away, ashamed of his tear. I continued to walk resolutely beside him.
When we got to class, he hurried away from me. Destiny gave me a funny glance, but said nothing. We bagged a table and started to set up our cauldrons when Professor Zabini appeared. He quickly introduced himself and set us up working on a simple potion to cure boils.
I had made it many times before, so wasn't worried. Destiny, on the other hand, started to panic. I had finished the first part of my potion and was watching it boil when Destiny prodded me.
'How many measures of snake fangs do I add?' She asked I a nervous whisper.
'4. And make sure they are crushed,' I told her.
She grinned at me, and I turned back to my work. After I had added the Horned Slugs and Porcupine Quills, I waved my wand. As I had expected, it turned a brilliant blue. But I wasn't finished yet. Adding some mint, I grinned and smelt it. Instead of the usual putrid smell, there was a fresh aroma of mint. I knew it would also taste like mint. Noting it down in my potions diary, I waited for everyone else to finish.
Professor Zabini quickly saw that I had finished and walked over. Glancing at it, a smile grew on his face. Giving it a quick smell, his eyes seemed to shine. He conjured a boil on his hand and took a small sip of the potion. The boil instantly disappeared and by the look on his face, the mint had done its job.
'20 points to Gryffindor for a fabulous potion and for using your initiative.' Zabini said, smiling at me. The class seemed to surge forward as one before…
'CHEAT!' Yelled a Slytherin girl. Everyone stared at her in shock, before glancing at her potion. It was a murky brown, and I guessed she had added a bit to many horned slugs. Surprisingly, someone stood up for me.
'Leave her alone Goyle' said Scorpius bravely.
'Shut up you shitty little blood-traitor!' She spat.
The room gasped.
'20 points from Slytherin,' bellowed Professor Zabini 'for horrific language and a detention from Mr Filch tonight.'
The rest of the class, who had been chatting among themselves, lapsed into silence.
'And' Zabini added '10 points to Gryffindor for standing up for a fellow pupil.'
The rest of the class proceeded in silence aside from the girl that had been rude (her name, as I learnt later, was Gretel Goyle) cauldron exploded. I didn't know why, but Malfoy gave me a little grin from his seat. But, after all, ask no questions and I'll tell no lies.
History Of Magic, as expected, was the dullest thing ever. Being the only daughter of a Lord, I already knew about Goblin Rebellions. However, when I put my hand up to tell Binns that, he just stared at me like I wasn't there. I spent the rest of the lesson in a light sleep, gradually growing more agitated.
You see, this was no ordinary dream I was having. No, I was having a nightmare. Except this nightmare wasn't from my imagination. This actually happened when I was 7 years old…
I was walking around Quality Quidditch Supplies with dad and Al, while Mum took James shopping for Hogwarts when I got distracted. The newest model (at that time) the Firebolt 2000 so I went closer.
It was then a man appeared and asked me if I liked the broom. I had always been warned against stranger, but I didn't see anything wrong with this man. He seemed nice enough, with light brown hair and blue eyes. I told him that yes, I did like the broom and that dad had promised to buy me one for Christmas.
He seemed very interested with my dad, and I probably should have realised something was wrong then. But I didn't. He just seemed so kind and honestly just interested with the broom.
It was then he told me he had a broom around the corner, and I seemed like I really wanted it. I followed him like a little puppy dog, blindly trusting him. As soon as we got round the corner, he grabbed me roughly by my arm and grabbed a portkey that was in the shape of a broom.
We were transported into a dark, filthy dungeon and he threw me in a corner, locking me in as he left. I started to sob and scream. I was disgusted that I hadn't realised this was a trick. I was scared of what my family would say. That I failed them. And most of all, I just wanted to go home.
I must have screamed for at least and hour before the man came thundering back down. He told me to shut the hell up, but I croaked one word. No. He hit me around the face and whipped me. When I wouldn't stop screaming, he sighed and used the cruciatus curse on me.
It was agony, beyond any pain I had ever experienced. It was worse that when I broke my arm falling off my broom. It was worse than when James broke my nose in a fight. I felt like knives were stabbing at my skin, penetrating into my stomach and lung. Just as I felt I could take it no more, the pain lifted. Whimpering, I glared at my kidnapper, but he just laughed in grim satisfaction.
It was 5 days until I was found, in which time I had been subjected to the cruciatus curse 3 more time and only had 1 meal a day. When I say meal, I mean crusts of dry bread and a glass of water.
Dad and a team of aurors eventually found me. The man was put in prison and I was sent straight to Saint Mungos. It was later discovered that the man was called Johnathon Blesk and that he was one of Voldemort's youngest followers, only being 15 when Voldemort was defeated.
I woke up with a gasp as the bell went. Binns looked up on surprise at the disruption, and quickly set us homework. Two feet about the first goblin rebellion. Easy!
The rest of the day passed in a blur, but ended with Destiny, Frank and Hugo slaving over Binns' homework, which I had done over break. Laughing, I grabbed Destiny's parchment to check it, but she pulled it back. This resulted in a loud ripping noise, which made half the common room look up.
'Oh Lily!' She moaned 'I'm going to have to start again.'
'No you won't' I say 'chuck it here.'
She did as I said, frowning all the same. I tapped the parchment and said 'repairo'. As I had expected, the parchment immediately fixed itself. I handed it back to Destiny with a small grin at her astounded look. I wasn't surprised. It was, after all, and 3rd year spell.
But what did they expect. Hermione wasn't my aunt for nothing!
The next day I didn't wake up nearly so early. In fact, I didn't wake up until 8:15, which meant I had to sprint down to breakfast. Late though I was, the owl post still hadn't come. When it did, it came with a nice surprise. Mum had written back, saying:
Dear Lily,
We are great, thanks for asking. Congratulations on making Gryffindor, your father and I are so proud. I hope James and Al are behaving. I swear, those boys will be the death of me. We miss you lots too. I saw your father sobbing on your bed. I think he misses him precious firecracker. Did you know your father was in the same year as Destiny's fathers! Or that I dated Dean Thomas! It would be nice to see them again. As for Amy and Alex, are they muggle-born? Because I don't recognise their surname.
As for Teddy's auror training…He's decided to give it up. Something about not being able to spend time with Vicky. Not like he sees her much anyway. He's not exactly going to run into her at Hogwarts now.
You worry way too much about the dogs. Mia and Padfoot are fine, although I fell like they miss you lots. How's Athena? Make sure you remember to feed her.
The fact that Scorpius Malfoy is a Gryffindor shocked your father, but I wasn't surprised. I was friends with her mother and she definitely had some Gryffindor tendencies that shined through her Slytherin side. Yes, Astoria was a great friend. Her son sounds just like her.
Give Neville our love, and say hi to the boys for me. Put them in their place for me.
Lots of love,
Mum and Dad

Smiling, I showed the letter to Hugo, who had been looking over my shoulder. He raised an eyebrow at the part that Mum admitted being friends with a Slytherin. Some people never stopped being prejudice. Although, his father is Ron. And Ron was the biggest anti-snake dude I know. I don't think they're bad. They're just made bad by the other houses and their families. It's rather sad really.
I had Herbology first period, so I grabbed my bag and headed down. Hugo followed me, but Frank and Destiny moved at a slower pace, much to my frustration. Yelling at them to get their arses over here I turned to a chuckling Hugo. Shaking my head at him, we quickly located greenhouse 1.
Neville, or Professor Longbottom, introduced himself to the muggle-borns. The rest of us already knew him, as he was a Lord and a war hero. Kind of hard not to recognise him on sight. Frank blushed as he came in. They are very similar, Frank and Neville. Which is unsurprising, as they are father and don. They both have sun-bleached blonde hair and sky blue eyes. They are both very clumsy, with big feet. Frank literally has no resemblance to his mum, Hannah. His sister, Alice, looks identical to her. Quite funny really.
Herbology was ok. We were looking at harmless plants such as flutterby bushes. I think I remember seeing them in a picture of Auntie Fleur and Uncle Bill's wedding at the burrow. I voiced this thought and gained 5 points for Gryffindor. But Neville probably felt sorry for me. He knew about yesterday. I got called into his office to talk about it. He ended up offering me a ginger newt, saying Mcgonagall did the same for him when he was upset. It was kind of sad, but kind of cute as well.
We had Defence next. We were manly doing theory, which was a bit boring. I wanted to be up there with adrenaline coursing through my blood. I asked the teacher (Professor d'Eath) when we would be doing a practical. He stared at me like I had asked him to marry me. Ew!
He then said that he didn't think we would need to do a practical if we studied the theory hard enough. Well, that did it. I stood up and told him very coldly that a teacher in my dad's 5th year had that view on teaching, and she's in Azkaban. Was that how he wanted to turn out?
Surprise surprise, I got a detention. I was so annoyed at this death dude I lost control. I walked up to him and smacked him on the cheek. Then I stormed out, but not before I yelled that I wouldn't be coming to his class or detention ever again.
Of course, I got called into Professor Longbottom's office, and after I told him my story, up to Mcgonagall's. After they had both had a good old yell at me, they sent a letter to my parents. I fully expected a howler from Mum in the morning. Thing is, they wouldn't know the full story. Death had told them his version, which saw him in a golden light and me in the mud. Great. Just great.
Thanks for reading guys. Please review
