Chapter 2

White Light

Seiyo Gakuen no Asa/X Chara Tanjou

"Change isn't so bad...

I was scared of change too."

.:Amu:.

We finally opened the doors and it was a whirlwind of familiar, and new faces. People were either running or laughing with their friends, making it hard to walk through the corridors. All the chara's looked around in interest and excitement. "Wow! Everyone is so lively and energetic!" grinned Ran, shaking her pompoms.

"Well of course, since it's the first day," said Miki, turning to Ran.

"It is a little hard to move around, desu~," finished Su.

I glance at my four would-be-selves, smiling. I'm ready to start anew - to be the girl that I have always wanted to be. I guess that's why I was somewhat looking forward to entering middle school, so I can do it properly and start again... I just hope my outer character doesn't show up and ruin things.

"Everyone seems ready for the new year," Nagihiko commented. I noticed that a few people I've never seen before were staring at him, probably because of his hair? Or maybe because he looked like a girl. The students that were staring seemed to be in a grade above us, or had transferred from other elementary schools.

By that time, I realised that more people were staring at us.

I guess we are a weird bunch... I mean, we got the girl that looks like a walking doll. A boy with really long hair, and looks like a girl, and the princely looking Tadase-kun. And then there's me… I don't fit in at all with them, the way I wear my uniform and my attitude; I am the "cool and spicy one" everyone knows. I don't know if their view on me is ever going to change...

"Amu, what's wrong?" Dia asks, floating up to me. Oops, she must have seen me.

"Oh, um, it's nothing really," I reply, hoping she didn't see through me. But I was wrong.

"Amu-chan, don't feel intimidated by this. This is a chance to start anew, and I know that, eventually, people will start to see you for who you truly are," she said, smiling softly.

I was surprised she read me so easily, despite every other time she's able to know what I was feeling. "Dia, thank you..."

"You're welcome," she giggled, flying off with her sisters.

I decided that she was right. With the help of everyone, I'll eventually open up more to the new people around me. It'll take time, but I know I'll get there some day.

Tadase's voice broke through my thoughts, "I think we should find out what homerooms we are in." Nagihiko and Rima nodded in agreement, so we headed towards the board with our names and classes on it.

I tried to find my name on the list… Hinamori… Hinamori Amu… "Aha!" I exclaim. "Found it!" My eyes travelled to the top of the list to read my homeroom … I was put into Homeroom D. I searched the page and saw Rima's name too. "Rima, we're in the same homeroom!" I cheered. She responded with a cute smile.

"Not only you and Rima are in the same homeroom, we all are," Tadase said. I looked at the board again, finding everyone's names.

"What are the chances of that happening?" Nagi said, looking up and down at the board.

"It is indeed strange," Miki pondered.

"Oh, come on Miki, there's nothing wrong with that!" Ran shouted at her, patting her on the back.

"I'm not saying anything is wrong with that, I'm just saying it's a little stra-" Rhythm cut her off.

"Oh, come on Miki! It's all cool!" said the cool chara, putting his arm over her. That action caused Miki to go all red in the face. Kusukusu giggled because of her face.

Miki pulled away, still red. "But doesn't anyone think it's a bit weird?!" she said frantically.

"Nope!" grinned Ran. Miki sighed in defeat.

"Ok commoner's!" Kiseki announced, all the chara's turning to him in curiosity. "Today, we have to check the whole school in case of any dangerous things! And any clues to finding the remains of the… EMBRYO!" boomed the kingly chara. All the chara's sagged their shoulders, and looked to each other irritably. They started to go after Kiseki, seeing as he flew away manically in search for something interesting. I stifled a laugh as I waved goodbye to my chara's.

I thought about what Kiseki said, and wondered about why he believed the Embryo still existed. There were legends surrounding it, and there might be hope that it is actually real. But when we all fought Easter that night, it just turned out to be a Hikaru's egg. I've asked the others before, if they still believe it might be real, but they doubt it was anything but that. I don't know why... but I still have a feeling it's out there.

Subconsciously, I reached into my pocket and pulled out the Humpty Lock.

I haven't transformed in a while, since not many X-eggs have appeared lately...

The Lock seemed a little heavier than usual, maybe because it hasn't been near its counterpart...

After Nikaidou and Yukari's wedding, he had left again. Yes, I was proud of him too, and found it brave that he was still willing to search for his father... But lately I've been feeling as though we've been separated, more than just in the physical sense... The promise we made to each other was something I wasn't going to forget for a while, though.

I still had that.

Managing a smile, and remembering to be happy for Ikuto, I put the Lock around my neck and braved on. I had to be patient, that's all I could do.

The bell shattered my reverie, and I looked around, finding my friends talking to each other. "I think we should go now," Rima commented, and I followed them as we finally made our way to Homeroom D.

My golden eyes scanned the room, seeing all the familiar faces from elementary, (and thankfully, not Saaya). My eyes travelled to the board, seeing our teacher's name etched in the top corner, "Kaede-sensei, huh?" I murmur. There were four rows in the classroom. I was in the 3rd row and Rima was to my left, near the window. Nagi was in front of me, and Tadase was at the left of Nagi, in front of Rima. We were a square shape.

"Ok, class!" Kaede-sensei said happily, clapping her hands together. "Welcome to middle school, I hope you have a great year here! I am now going to take the roll! Chiyo Ai!" Well, at least she's nice…

I turned away from our teacher, and found that Nagi and Tadase were talking, "So when are we going to meet Kukai?" asked Tadase, leaning forward to hear Nagihiko speak.

"He threw away his spot on playing soccer with his friends, and is sitting with us instead," he whispered, grinning proudly.

I quickly interrupted, "Wait. We are going to see Kukai?! Is he sitting with us?!" I spoke up, excited.

"HINAMORI-SAN!" Kaede-sensei screeched, I jumped in my seat and my back immediately tensed. Crap, I spoke too loud.

She walked over to my desk at top speed, but it seemed like slow motion. Her high heels clacked against the floor, making me jump every time I heard the noise. She finally stopped right in front of me, with a terrifying glare on her face. I glance over at Rima quickly, she gives me a 'what's happening?' face. My eyes dart all around the class and I notice everyone is looking at me. Oh God. By now I would have said something 'cool and spicy', or let my façade take over, but… no.I would have to try in all my will power to act like a normal girl… How does a normal girl act?

I finally speak up. "Um, yes Kaede-sensei?" I speak with as much strength in my voice as possible, but not too much.

"Hinamori-san, do you think it is polite to speak when someone else is speaking?" she said with a stern voice.

"Of course not," I say. Tone it down, Amu!

"Well then, I would advise you to no talk when I am calling the roll," she rose her voice a little, that only made me more competitive.

"Sure, Kaede-sensei."

"I can't hear you."

"I said okay," No, now I've really gone and done it!

Voices from the class began to rise, "Wow, she's cool..." "That's the same character she had from grade school!" "It's expected from her, obviously."

They… expect me to act like this...?

Then and there I felt like crying. After all this time, they still don't know the real me. I thought I put so much effort into trying to change, and yet they still think this way...

Dia's words then echoed throughout my head.

"Eventually, people will start to see you for who you truly are..."

Slowly, I looked around me. People continued to whisper and look at me in surprise, but their voices faded out. I shouldn't expect them to notice me as someone else straight away. It'll take a little bit of time, but… I'll get there eventually. I just have to keep on trying.

"Hinamori-san, why are you smiling? Do you think it's funny?" Kaede-sensei said sternly again, her voice getting higher.

"N-no, sensei! I was just thinking about something!" I shook my hands, blinking in fear. A few people giggled at my actions, which caused me to I smile even more.

"Good, since it's your first day I won't give you a detention," she quips, walking back to her desk.

"Hinamori is a troublemaker!" "She is kinda badass!" I left the gossip to be gossip, useless words. I turned to look at my friends, who gave reassuring smiles back.

I shouldn't worry, classes are almost over anyway. Then I'll be able to see Kukai again.

My head rested on top of a wooden lunch table and I sighed loudly. My left ear was pressed against the wood so I could only hear a little of the white noise surrounding me. Rima unfolded her neatly packaged sandwich, Tadase did some class work and Nagi was eating from a packet of chips. "Amu, what's wrong?" Rima spoke, taking a bite from her sandwich, and seeing the I was clearly in a state of depression.

"I had the worst two classes ever!" I say dramatically, lifting my head up slightly and throwing my hands in the air. Nagi laughed at my actions.

Rima puts down her food and looks at me with bored eyes. "You want to talk about it?" she asks.

"Not exactly..." I say simply, stretching out my arm to take a chip from Nagi's packet.

"Hey!" I hear from behind me. My arm stops halfway, and my eyes widen.

"Kukai!" I shout, launching my head off the table and turning around in my spot.

"Yo, Hinamori!" he grins, bringing out his hand and ruffling my hair.

"Kukai, you'll mess my hair up!" I whine, backing away from his hand

"Speaking about your hair, it's different..." he squints, and brings his eyes to my hair. I notice that he's gotten taller.

"Souma-san!" Tadase exclaims, standing up to greet Kukai.

"Hey, King!" he says patting him on the back.

Tadase shrugged and smiled. "I'm not the King anymore, though."

"It's nice to see Kukai again, huh, Amu?" Miki asked, coming out of nowhere.

"Yeah," I say back, as I watch Kukai shake hands with Nagi and Rima at the same time.

"Daichi!" screeches Ran, flying up to him and shaking excitedly.

"Hey! I have been practicing throughout the holidays!" Daichi winked, bouncing a soccer ball on his knee.

"Well so have I!" claims Ran.

"Let's play!" he shouts at her, getting into a starting position or something.

Rhythm swaggers up to them, hands in his pockets. "Hey, can I join in to?"

"Sure! The more the merrier!" Ran laughs.

I am pretty sure that I heard Miki mumble something like "How come she gets all the attention?" behind her sketchpad. I sat down again, and Kukai sat next to me and all just talked about random stuff, like what we did in the holidays and what classes we have. "Ssoo how was your first day so far?" Kukai asked me, taking a sip of some chocolate milk.

"Well, I almost got a detention..." I said sheepishly.

Kukai choked on his chocolate milk. "What?!" he blurted out. "What for?"

"For talking when teacher was talking," I grin sheepishly too, rubbing the back of my neck.

"What was the punishment?!"

"I didn't get a punishment?"

He raises his eyebrow. "But you got a detention?"

"I said I ALMOST got a detention!" I shout, flailing my arms everywhere.

"OOHHH, I thought you said you got a detention."

"No!"

"What class?"

"Homeroom."

"WHAT, that's not even a class?! That's pretty much saying you got a detention as soon you walked through the door!"

I roll my eyes. "I got away with it, ok?"

"You need to watch yourself, Hinamori," he said, sipping more of his chocolate milk.

It was almost like old times in the Royal Garden. We talked about the memories we've had and what we are going to do in the near future. We said things like what are we going to do now since Easter is gone. Then the subject got onto X-eggs. "Have you guys seen any X-eggs around lately?" asked Kukai, leaning his head on his hand.

"Now that you mention, no I haven't," Tadase frowns upon the thought.

"It's so weird, it's like they have gone into hiding," adds Nagi.

I felt uncomfortable about this topic, so I spaced out and let my mind wonder… I looked around the lunch area. There were about 20 or so tables in the courtyard, and on the left were basketball courts, then there was a path that lead to the soccer field. Beyond the soccer field there were a bunch of trees. Then I realized something. "The middle school is right next to Seiyo Academy!" I exclaim, standing up from my seat. I received blank looks from everyone. "That means we can see Yaya, Kairi and Hikaru!" I shout again. Yaya would now be in sixth grade, and Kairi said he would come back to Seiyo and be in fifth grade and Hikaru is now in fourth grade?

I saw everyone's face turn into a big grin.

Kukai did a thumbs up. "Let's go!"

We made our way back to a place full of memories, and everyone's charas were eager to get there. We tried to find the Royal Garden, but the elementary students found us first.

"AMU-CHI, RIMA-TAN, TADASE-KUN, NAGI AND KUKAI?!" Yaya bellowed. And in half a second, she was hugging me. Or rather, strangling me. "YOU CAME! You all came to visit!?" she screeched.

"Yes… Now Yaya- CAN'T BREATH!" I gasp for air.

"Oh, right," she says, getting off of me and shaking Nagi like a rag doll.

"Hinamori-san," greets Kairi, blushing and pushing up his glasses.

I turn to him and smile, "Hey, Class Prez."

While Yaya was squeezing Rima, Kukai and Tadase to death, I felt that this was my chance to talk to Hikaru. I knelt down to his height, speaking softly, "Hey, Hikaru."

"Hello," he replied quietly, looking away.

I laughed and pat his head. "You sure have grown."

He looks up at me with a surprised expression. "Really?" he asks eagerly.

"Of course you have," I say gently. I look at the charas and hear their conversations.

"PEPE, it's so good to see you!" laughs Kusukusu.

"Dechu~." she replies.

"Hey Musashi!" shouts Ran, shaking her pom poms as usual.

He bows his head. "Salutations to you all."

All the charas start playing with each other, which lead me to another question. "Hey Hikaru, has anything happened to your egg lately?"

He pulled his out yellow egg from his pocket. There was a still a small crack in it, but not much progress had been made since the last time I saw it. "... No, nothing has happened to it," he said, disappointed.

I smile. "Well that's normal; eggs can go at whatever pace they want."

"...What if it never does hatch?"

"Of course it will! But, it will take some time," I say, reassuring him, to which he nodded his head. He glanced over my shoulder.

I raise my eyebrow. "What is it, Hikaru?" I look over my shoulder and to see Dia gazing at his egg. She floated towards it, and puts her small hands on the egg, closing her eyes.

After a moment, she smiled and pulled away. "You have a very powerful child in the egg... And he will come soon, you just have to be patient."

Hikaru gazes at her in wonder. "Can you tell me his name? Or what he looks like? Or his personality?" he repeated, growing more eager each question he asked. Wow... I've never seen Hikaru like this.

Dia shook her head softly. "I'm sorry, but I can't tell exactly his features. Although, there is a very strong light emitting from it."

He nodded and glanced at it again. "I'm just so nervous to meet him." Aw, Hikaru is nervous... Well, I mean it is his guardian character after all, but it was cute to see him like this! I look at the egg with him.

"I'm sure he'll be wonderful," I say. He looks at me and smiles brightly.

I then heard a gasp from Dia, seeing her turn to the other chara's and then to me. "Amu-chan!"

Her tone made me jolt, my head snapping towards her. "What is it?!"

"X-Eggs!" I hear Su yell. I stand up quickly, and look at everyone - all of them seemed ready to fight, while I felt confused, finding it weird that all of a sudden there were X-eggs.

"Let's go!" Nagi shouts. We all run after our charas, dodging trees and jumping over rocks. I look over my shoulder, and see Rima falling behind. I run back, and grab her hand.

"Over there!" shouts Miki, pointing over to five X-eggs floating over children's unconscious bodies. Wait- five of them? How could there suddenly be so many?

"Rima, Nagi, Tadase, Amu, and I will transform!" shouts Kukai, readying himself.

"Aww, I wanna transform too!" whined Yaya, pouting.

Kairi stood next to her, and sighed. "Souma-kun is right. There are five of the eggs and five of them." he noted, while she just huffed.

"FINE!"

I gazed at all of them, wondering if anyone felt the same confusion as I did. They gave me a confident sign that they were ready and waiting for me, so I did my best to smile. "Ok then. My Heart... Unlock!

"Character transformation! Amulet Heart!"

"Character Transformation! Clown Drop!"

"Character Transformation! Platinum Royal!"

"Character Transformation! Beat Jumper!"

"Character Transformation! Sky Jack!"

"Ok! Let's do this!" I shout, relishing in the newfound energy that the transformation lend me. "Heart Speeders!" The familiar pink roller skates popped onto my feet, and I took off, gliding across the air and chasing after the X-eggs. "Spiral Heart!" My Heart Rod spun towards them, striking two X-eggs and covering them in light, while the other three escaped. I soared over to the two of them, while one X-egg attacked from behind me.

"Holy Crown!" A golden barrier appeared, and I turned to see Tadase holding it up with his sceptre.

"Thank you, Tadase!" I shout to him.

"Juggling party!" Rima got one X-egg to come my way.

"Blaze Shoot!" That's it Nagi.

"Golden Victory Shoot!" Great! They're all coming this way!

The three X-eggs came into sight, and I got ready. "Negative Heart! Lock On!" The fingers laced into place by instinct, and I pushed them out. "… Open Heart!" The X-eggs transformed back into Heart's Eggs, and floated back to the children, a gentle hum resounding over the area. "Glad that's over," I grin, triumph once again overcoming me.

Ran then appeared next to me in her transparent form. "Amu-chan!" she echoed, clearly worried.

"Ran, what is it?" I ask her, turning to her.

"Behind you!" she points and I turn around. There was one more X-egg floating!

"Ah, I only purified four!" I shout.

I charge forward with my Heart Rod, and I was about throw it, but just before I did, a white light blinded my vision. I covered my eyes, letting out a small squeak. Slowly, I took my hand away and opened my eyes, only to see that... the X-egg was purified. The Heart's Egg floated in mid-air, and softly drifted into the last child. I hovered there, shocked for a few brief seconds. Seeing everyone else on the ground looking at me with the same expression, I went to see if they saw anything. Ran undid the transformation, and everyone came running towards me. "What was that?!" shouted Yaya, instantly putting her face into mine.

"I-I don't know..." I stutter, worry and confusion spreading over my face. "You guys didn't see anything from here?"

Nagihiko shook his head. "No, all I saw was that bright light, then the next second, that egg was cured."

Kairi cleared his throat, grabbing my attention. "Well, since I was on the ground, I had noticed that a beam of light emerged from the trees."

My mouth hung open. "Really?" I turn to look at the trees around us, feeling a chill go up my spine.

"Now that's weird..." Kukai commented, gazing where I was looking with an eyebrow raised.

Tadase sighed, thinking over something. "Someone purified an X-egg... wouldn't that mean they were trying to help us?"

Rima frowned, almost glaring over her shoulder. "Then why wouldn't they show themselves, if they were on our side?"

Tadase frowned as well, looking to the ground. "I... I'm not sure..."

I looked at everyone, trying to grab answers from them. There was someone behind those trees, that just had the power alone to cure an X-egg. I felt as though we should go looking for them, but something tells me they didn't want to be found. I frowned, squeezing my hand.

It was only my first day, and yet, I already have something to be worried about...
