Chapter two – Autumn II – I wish I could
So he was sitting on this table. Having his lunch. Doing nothing but looking around searching for someone else who was sitting alone that he might join, when suddenly, someone hit his back so hard that he almost choked on his burger. "What the -?!". Axel laughed. "Sorry, dude. I thought I might just join you, you looked rather alone". While trying to catch his breath, Roxas nodded in approval, although he actually... didn't want him to be here. This guy meant trouble and he wasn't one to need that. "Great! Oh, don't you want your fries? Can I have them?". Before the blond could even have said something, his fries had already vanished in the older one's mouth. "so how's your day been so far?". Roxas took a sip of his coke, hardly able to swallow because of the dry feeling in his throat. "Oh, erm, great. Till...". "Till what?". Axel munched his burger, the sauce dripping out at the sides. emTill you showed up/em. "Never mind". The older one shrugged and Roxas couldn't deny how cute he looked while eating. He looked cute regardless of what he was doing, but that was not something that he would ever admit to himself. Too much danger.
"So, you found friends so far?". He still hadn't got rid of the annoying redhead; instead, he was now following him around. "Not really", the blond muttered. It was bothering him lots; he'd dreamt of finding friends like people do in highschool movies, but instead, people were giving him weird looks for being so small and young. Except Axel. But... he was not to be considered a friend.
Demyx was trying to casually stare at the red-haired guy sitting only a few metres from where he was. That was his current goal; achieving how to casually stare. Make it look like you're lost in thoughts. But the problem was that Demyx was just not inconspicuous. Instead, he was more than obvious, having his head propped on his hand and drooling over Axel's... beauty. "Dude", Sora said. "Dude, you're freaking obvious". "What?". The brunet rolled his eyes. How did he get stuck with that douchebag anyway? "Axel. You're staring at him like... I don't know. You seem like a stalker. And anyway, he's so out of your league". The blond pouted and tried to deny what Sora had just said, but he knew it was true. "Maybe". His friend patted his back. "We're gonna find someone better for you, eh? For example...". Demyx didn't listen; something else had caught his attention. Axel was leaving... with the new one. "Hey Sora, who's that guy?". "The blond? Well, I know nothing else than that his name's Roxas", he replied darkly. What a good liar he was.
So the days passed and suddenly, Roxas found himself hanging out with Axel and his friends more and more. He met Saïx, of whom he didn't know how exactly he'd become friends with Axel, as he was the complete opposite of him, Marluxia, whose sassiness made him laugh every day and finally, Xion, who was shy but pretty sweet actually. Had he been into girls, he sure would have thought of her in a different way. Hanging with them and other new people brightened up his mornings, but as soon as he returned home, this was being torn down again.
"Roxas, why are you not doing your homework?". "I'm already finished". "Then you should prepare yourself for the next lesson". It was the same conversation every day, making it impossible to do some fun stuff as long as his parents were home or awake, which was why Roxas usually started playing video games at night. Having skipped a class obviously made his parents think he should use the opportunity and be a perfect student either way. Not that he missed something or oh god, get a C! The blond rolled his eyes. He hated his parents, if you could call them that. His mother was his real mother indeed, but his "father" only was his step dad. He respected him nevertheless, even though he was a sarcastic, aggressive prick who thought way too good of himself. Lost in thoughts, Roxas almost got a heart attack when his phone rang.
"Uh, hey?". He hadn't recognised the number, so he had no clue who was on the other end. "Hey Rox, it's Axel. I um... wondered whether we could hang tonight?". Sweat started to form on the younger boy's forehead. He couldn't tell him that his parents didn't want him to meet friends in the evening because he was supposed to learn or prepare or help them with the household. "I don't... I don't have time, I'm sorry". The redhead almost sounded sad when he replied, "Okay, shame. Next time then. See ya". Roxas put his phone aside and dropped himself on his bed, buried his face in his pillow and cursed his parents once more.
Had he just... had he really rejected him?! Who the fuck ever rejected emhim/em?! Axel sighed. Probably he just really didn't have time. After all, he'd skipped a class and probably had a lot of stuff to learn. Or he was doing something with someone else. Or he just didn't like him, as he'd concluded the first day they'd met. "What the fuck, Axel", he spoke to himself. Why was this bothering him so much? He was just some kid. No one special, was he? The answer was pretty obvious to him; of course they'd just met, but since Roxas was hanging out with him and his clique some more, Axel had found himself liking him more than he should have. He liked the kid's humour, his smile, his eyes and the way he talked, just because it was so damn cute. emEverything/em this kid did was cute. Irresistibly cute. He promised himself to keep asking. There would be a day when Roxas would not be busy doing anything else.
"Hey, can we meet tonight?", "You doin' something this weekend?", "Got plans for tomorrow?". Axel kept asking him, every day. And to be honest, Roxas was just getting more and ore upset about it. He did want to meet Axel, preferably every day, but he just couldn't. Yesterday, he'd tried to ask his parents, but all they'd said was, "You've got time for friends after school or in the holidays. Anyway, we'd like to meet them first, you mustn't have friends with a bad influence on you". He really didn't get it. His parents really weren't upper class or even rich to act like this. Plus, they should be proud of their son, but no. They kept saying no to everything he asked. "I'm sorry, Axel, I... I really can't". the emerald eyes turned cold. "Okay. I get it. If you don't wanna spend time with me, just say so, okay? I'm sick of this shit". With this, he turned around and walked away to talk to someone Roxas didn't know. Even though he wasn't six anymore, he fucking felt like crying. He'd lost everything that had given him stability for the last five weeks or so.
"Hey Ax, why so down? You look like someone's run you over". Xion sat down next to her friend, who was smoking near the bus stop. "Oh, nothing. Just got rejected again". The black-haired girl couldn't help a smile. "Hearing that from you is really unusual, you know". He poked her in the ribs. "I mean, I just don't get it. See, this kid has no friends and if it hadn't been for me, he would still run around all on his own. And when we're together in school, he's always cool and... talks to me and shit, I sound like a teenage girl". His friend gave him a smile. "You do, but that's fine. I was convinced you didn't even have feelings". The older one tried a glare, but they burst out in laughter instead. "Whatever. Maybe, Axel, it's not you. You don't know what problems the kid might have at home. Maybe... maybe his parents are weird or something". "Nah, don't think so. He woulda told me". She raised her eyebrows. "You sure?". With a quick nod, he dropped his cigarette and stepped on it. "Well, then... try to make him jealous. I mean, I know someone who's clearly into you and you never know. Maybe Roxas will react to that". "Who? And Xion, really – where would he be where I can simply make out with someone and he'll be guaranteed to see it?". She ddn't have to say a word; all it took was pointing a finger towards a banner.
"So, you also coming to the party of the year?", a platinum blond guy, who he believed to be Luxord, asked. "Hm. I don't know yet...". "Aw, come on, man. Everyone's going". It was then that Roxas decided to give a fuck about his parents and just go.
The music was loud and Demyx was as happy as he could be. Everyone was happy and what was the most important thing – Axel was talking to him. Like he'd imagined in every of his dreams, he was talking to him and fuck, he was flirting as well and Demyx would have been stupid to let this chance be taken from him.
"So, you managed to get here?", Xion asked him. "Yeah, I sneaked out of the house". The girl tilted her head. "Huh? Why?". Roxas hesitated at first, but then told her the truth. Why he never managed to hang out with them after school or on the weekends. And this had led to Axel being mad at him. When Xion understood, it was already too late. "So, you do like him?". The blond blushed. "I like all of you, but yeah, I guess I like him a little too much". "Too much?". He cast his eyes downwards. "Yeah, you see, my parents... wouldn't approve. And oh. You're... actually the first one who knows. Fuck, I didn't mean to tell you, I'm sorry, I –". Xion shook her head with a smile. "Hey, calm down. I don't care about what gender you like. Axel's bisexual, some of my other friends are gay, that's fine with me. And I promise not to tell anyone. And about your parents... I think you should talk to them and just stay calm. They can't change you after all and about the other matter, explain why you want to go out and tell them you can't be good in school when you're lonely". Roxas's eyes were shining as he hugged her. "Thank you, Xion. You're a real friend, even though we haven't known each other for too long". She kept smiling as she replied, "Friendship doesn't know time". Even though in the back of her head, she had a bad feeling about this party.
Demyx hadn't seen it coming. Just a compliment about his hair and all of a sudden, the redhead's lips had crashed his. He couldn't hold back a tiny moan as his tongue slipped into his own mouth, his taste was filling Demyx up and he couldn't do different than to tightly lock his arms around the taller one's waist. How many dreams were to come true tonight?
Roxas felt his heart rack just a little as he saw Axel kiss the weird guy with the mullet. "I guess I'm too late", he told Xion and intended to leave. "Roxas, it's not... like that", she whispered and followed him outside to explain the weird situation which had evolved; trying hard to not say too much, she still managed to get Roxas to understand. He still seemed sadder than he should have and Xion cursed herself for giving Axel that advice.
Of course he didn't take the mullet head home. He wasn't even his type; far too loud and far too giggly. But obviously, his method had worked – Roxas had looked pretty upset when he'd left the party.
Still, he wasn't talking to him; he wanted him to come up to him. He needed to know that Roxas wanted to be friends with him too. "Hey", he heard a quiet voice behind himself. "You wanna hang out with me Saturday?". He turned around with a smile. "Hmm... maybe". The younger one looked taken aback. "Okay, then...". Axel laughed. "Hey Roxas, I'm just kidding. Sure I'll hang out with you. But only if you allow me to slip into your room using the windows". The younger ne laughed. "of course, you stupid rebel".
Demyx watched the scene silently. He'd known it. He'd freaking known it. Axel had used him to get the blond back. The stupid kid. That useless, innocent boy with his huge, blue eyes. He sighed, hardly able to choke back the tears and the sobs in his throat. "Hey", someone suddenly said, "Are you okay? Here, have some chocolate – I guess that helps". Demyx looked into a pair of dark blue eyes, which were mostly covered by blue and white hair and saw a crooked smile and a shaking hand offering him chocolate. "Why, thank you. I'm Demyx". He took a bite of the chocolate and watched the small guy in front of him smile. "I'm Zexion".
