History.
So this was written to be set in the modern era with China remembering his roots, the ones he had back in 4th century BC. During this time was a period of transition between the old dynasty of Chou Dynasty and the unification of China then to the Ch'in Dynasty under the first emperor Qin Shu Huangdi.
Here I created brothers and sisters that sort of passed on their dominate trait to China when they passed away. This is the belief I created in enlightenment of the multiple unifications that occurred throughout history as well as the meaning of unification. I believe that even now today Germany and Italy hold some of the gifts and knowledge of their predecessors within them; making them an enhanced version of themselves. They are not only China, or Ch'in, but rather all of the states than came to form Ch'in. The most dominate being Ch'in because that was the state that won and dominated the other states.
But aside from that.
Let's start with the mother. I didn't feel that it was right for China to not ever have had a parental figure so I improvised. China's mother is the person before the Shang dynasty. She died in the Chou dynasty when her sons and daughter took over towards the end of the Chou dynasty. I named her sons and daughter after the legendary five great sages: Huang Ti, Chuan Hsiu, K'u, Yao, and Shun. I chose Chuan to be a girl simply based on the fact that to me, Chuan sounds feminine.
Alright so the Warring States.
There was a break away from culture, language and traditional customs between Chin, Ch' I, and Ch' u. At the time to sea warring states Wu and Yueh grew in power and then started a series of long wars against Ch' u. Later Wu fell leaving Yueh and Ch' u to battle their differences out.
It is important to remember that at the time it was considered barbaric to fight against other ethnic Chinese people; however, the people on the outside, the non- Chinese where barbarians and it was alright to fight against them.
So internal conflicts of ruling powers wanting to gain more land and control broke apart the unified state into seven different states. It is 7 because Chao or Chin broke apart into three different states.
So now we have:
Chao
Han
Wei
Ch' i
Yen
Ch' in
Ch' u
There were weaker smaller states that where absorbed into these larger states. As well another very important thing was the advancements of the outside enemies. Ch'u had the state of Yueh to worry about, Ch'I and Yen had the Normans and the central state where surrounded by enemies and their biggest goal was staying 'alive' so to speak.
Notably Ch' in had no enemies on his back, this played a major role in the end result of the war.
As well for K' u wearing trousers and such, the traditional Chinese men wore something closer to a kilt so they did not ride horses and the Normans and the Mongols did. During this era the Chinese began to integrate outside influences.
There was also the invention of iron weapons, better chariots, and siege warfare.
As well as Ch' in became a legalist society, basically they believe that the laws must be firm and the punishments great so people don't break them. They also turned away from traditional custom thinking they were frivolous and weak. China during this time lost much of its culture but some was saved by scholars.
So Yao at the time it's leader would have been Prince Cheng or Ch' in then as the dynasty changed Shin Huang Ti would have taken control for the final battle of Ch'i.
In all the central states fell first, then Ch'u in 223 BC from an attack by Yueh and Ch' in. Yen fell in 222BC and lastly Ch' I fell in 221BC and mark the end of the Warring States.
Under the Ch'in dynasty it was a brutal regime. During this time the great wall was built several attacks on the enemies around the borders and the famous Terra cotta army was created.
The regime was based under the idea of Legalist who believed firm laws for order and rejected much of the old Chinese ways. Hence Huang believed that Yao has 'lost himself'. But I already said that.
So another OC of mine.
The reason I paid so much attention to explaining the personalities was because in my mind the reason Yao himself has all of these traits is from the uniting of his brothers and sister. Once I have read more into unification of different countries this idea will probably solidify in my mind. But the way countries unify they incorporate part of that person into themselves.
So for Yao he gained pride for his nation from Hunag, clam and peace (because let's face it to take care of as many children as he had he would have the patience of a saint) Wisdom from K' u and endurance form Shung.
I hope that you might have made that connection with the mentioning of the tea cup and pot but I didn't openly state it really so whatever.
And I think that's it. Thank you so much to all those favorite and followed my story. I'm sad to say this is only a one shot; but I am still glad you all enjoyed it. Thank you to my reviewers who gave me good advice on fixing my writing and seemed to enjoy the story. Hopefully you will all read another historical one shot when I get around to making it.
Thanks and have a great day!
