CHAPTER 2: PAPERCUT
Something's not right today. Why am I so uptight today? Mommy and Daddy were still sleeping. I've been up all night, kneeling by their cold, hard beds. I peer out the window—it's foggy. I can see the sunrise, a faded orange, red, and yellow blur, through the fog. Why does it feel like night today? I can feel myself falling asleep…
I hear the sound of footsteps nearing. As the door opens, I feel the gust of wind. A nurse stood there, looking at me with eyes filled with pity. Another man followed closely behind her. He's wearing a purple suit, and he has shoulder length blonde hair. He looks pretty, almost like a girl.
"Honey…your parents won't be waking up. I'm sorry," the nurse quietly said, averting her eyes away from me. I take in my surroundings. I'm in a different room now! Where are Mommy and Daddy?
"Wha-What do you mean by not waking up? Where are they?"
"I'm not sure how to tell you this but…they're—" the nurse starts.
"—Up in the clouds now! They're on a vacation, but remember that they're always watching you!" the flamboyant man interjects, finishing the sentence.
"Is that why it was foggy this morning? Daddy once said that fog was just the clouds coming down to the ground for a visit."
"Umm, of course!" he nervously replied. "I'll be taking you to a place where there are many other children like you soon! Let's get breakfast first, I'm starving!"
When they took me out of the room, I looked back… I had a feeling I wouldn't be seeing Mommy and Daddy anytime soon.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
"Hotaru! I got in! I got in, Hotaru!" I leaped with joy and let out a little shriek.
"Shut up, you're killing my ear drums," Hotaru said, rummaging through the pile of neatly opened letters.
I peered over to see what she was looking at and my mouth opened up into an 'O' shape as I said, "Whoa! You got accepted into all of the colleges you applied to? Which one are you going to pick?"
"I'll go to whichever has the best neurotechnology program," Hotaru said as she flipped through the dozens of acceptance letters. "So that'd be Tokyo University."
Right when I was about to scream with happiness, Hotaru cut me off. "Remember, it's for neurotechnology- not for you."
"I love you Hotaru! So so so so much!" I said while giving her a big hug.
"Get off me, you moron. You're choking me." Hotaru tried to keep her stoic face intact, but I could see the smile breaking through. We had been home schooled together by Uncle Narumi ever since preschool, along with three other girls from Hotaru's neighborhood. They couldn't stay at a public school because of their conflicting schedules. I just wanted to stay with Hotaru, but I had to walk around eight miles to get to "school" everyday. I lived at an orphanage at the next town over, but I really didn't mind because I got to see them almost everyday.
"Oh my gosh, we have to make sure Sumire, Anna, and Nonoko got in too! I really want all of us to stay together!"
"They already did," Hotaru said while showing me their texts on her phone.
"AHH! I'm so happy! See Hotaru, all those long, arduous days of your tutoring finally paid off!"
Hotaru just shrugged, but I knew she was happy that we were still going to be together, on the inside at least. I was still trying to wrap my head around the fact that I, of all people, was going to go to the prestigious, renowned Tokyo University! Okay, well, I did have a letter of recommendation from Uncle Narumi, who apparently had connections, but I still studied every single day for months.
I haven't actually been to an urban city before- at least not as big as Tokyo. Although the fact scared me a little, I was thrilled to finally get out of my hometown. Don't get me wrong, I love Nagoya, but I just want something a bit...more. I didn't feel like I was meant to live in a suburban area, though I did love looking at the grassy green fields and the sky, especially at night. Because there wasn't any smog, it was a deep navy blue, almost black, canvas splattered with sparkling, white dots. Sometimes, I would sneak outside of the orphanage just to look at the beautiful night sky.. Part of me will really miss this part of Nagoya. Well, it wasn't like I couldn't visit.
"Hello? Anyone there?" Hotaru snapped me out of my trance and I shook my head, getting back to reality. "We're going to start packing today and leave tomorrow."
"Wait now? Tomorrow? What?"
"Yes stupid, do you not understand English?"
"Why so early? We still have a month before school starts, right?"
"Just thought we could get there earlier, to go-"
"Oh my gosh are we going sightseeing? I love you Hotaru!"
Finally, Hotaru actually smiled.
Wellllllll I'm back!
