Chapter 2 - Thursday
In the next day at the break for lunch, Sam and Castiel went for a walk in a park near the school. As they walked around, Castiel grabbing Sam's arm, Sam felt someone pulling his jacket. He turned around and he saw a little boy looking at him, but not any boy, the same who had stolen his wallet.
The kid seemed to have 6 years old, he was skinny, had short blond hair and light blue eyes. He was wearing ripped old jeans and a discoloured sweater.
"I'm sorry," the boy said shyly, holding Sam's wallet.
Sam grabbed his wallet. "Thanks..." He told the kid, not sure of what to say.
The young boy ran away, scared.
"Wait." Sam called for him and went after him for a while until the boy got out of his sight.
"Lost him again?" Castiel asked when he got close to Sam.
"Yeah..." Sam said sadly.
"Who was that kid?"
"I don't know. I never saw him before."
"Come on, let's go." Castiel grabbed his arm again.
They kept walking but Sam kept thinking about the kid. Questions crossed his mind but he had no answers. Questions like, why did he return his wallet?
"I think it's better we go find the kid," Sam said.
"Sam, this is a big park and we don't know where he went," Castiel told him. "How are we going to find him here? Assuming he is still here."
Castiel was right, he didn't know anything about the kid and he had no clue of how to find him. Besides, the park was desert; he probably wasn't even in the park anymore.
They walked a few more meters and then Sam stopped. "Sam?" Castiel asked.
Sam smiled, like he had found something. "If you were a kid, where would you go?"
Castiel shook his head and then Sam pointed a finger to the side.
"The playground," Castiel said when he saw where Sam was pointing.
They approached the playground that was apparently empty, but then Castiel saw something behind a slide. When they got closer they saw the boy sitting on a step of the slide, looking down.
He looked up when he saw someone approaching. His face turned from sad to scared.
"Easy. We are not going to hurt you," Sam said before the kid ran away again.
The boy wiped the tears with his sleeve. "I didn't take anything from your wallet, I swear," he said as if he had been threatened.
"Okay, I believe you. Just calm down." Sam knelled before him. "Why did you take my wallet?" he asked nicely.
"I needed money. I know it was wrong; we can't steal things to other people. So my mom told me to return it." He said using his mother's words.
"What did you need the money for?"
"We don't have much money. The money my mom gains, she spends it to buy me food. I just... wanted to give her something too." The kid told them sadly.
Sam and Castiel finally understood the heartbreaking story. They looked at each other and they were thinking the same thing; they had to help the boy.
"What's your name?" Castiel asked kneeling too.
"Adam. Adam Milligan."
"Hi Adam, I'm Castiel. That's Sam," Castiel introduced them.
"Adam, have you eaten anything today?" Sam asked.
"Yeah, a glass of milk."
Not so bad. But still, it was almost 2pm.
"We were about to have lunch. Do you want to come with us? You must be hungry," Castiel invited him.
Adam nodded shyly.
"Let's go, then." Sam held his hand to him and Adam took it.
They got out of the park and went to a restaurant nearby. As probably Adam had never been on a restaurant, Castiel chose what to eat. All three ate soup, which Adam found delicious; probably because he never ate anything better.
Then they ate a hamburger, well little Adam only was able to eat half of his and saved the other half for later. For dessert Sam and Castiel ate apple pie. As Adam couldn't eat anything else, Castiel bought him a lollipop. Adam looked amazed and more importantly, happy.
After they left the restaurant. "Thanks." Adam said with a smile.
"So where are you going now?" Castiel asked.
"I better go home."
"Do you mind we go with you?"
Adam shook his head with a little smile. "I'll take you there." Adam grabbed Castiel's hand and then Sam's with his other hand.
Adam guided them to a sad little old house with the garden full of weeds; the house was probably abandoned and they stood there because they couldn't afford a better house.
"Mom, I'm home," Adam said as he opened the creaky wood door.
When the little boy entered he saw no one. Adam looked in the kitchen but his mom wasn't there, so he went to the living room that had only an old sofa where he and his mother slept.
Sam and Castiel stood at the door; they didn't want to invade the lady's house. But then they heard a scream. It was Adam's. They followed the sound and when they got to the living room they saw Adam next to his mother lied on the floor, unconscious.
"Mom..." Adam called with tears in his eyes, shaking his mother.
"I'll call 911." Castiel told Sam.
Sam took Adam away from his mother, holding him in his arms as the kid cried. "Shh, everything's gonna be okay." Sam whispered to Adam.
Five minutes later, an ambulance came. The health professionals took care of the woman and then took her into the ambulance. As Adam was her son, they had to take him too. They couldn't leave him with two strangers.
"You have to go with them, okay?" Sam told Adam as Castiel told what had happen to a nurse.
Adam didn't answer, he was too scared.
"You can trust them. They'll take care of you," he said, looking into Adam's teary blue eyes.
Then a nice woman took him to the ambulance too.
Sam and Castiel kept staring to the ambulance until it got out of their sight. They took a deep breath to calm their accelerated hearts.
"Maybe we should go to the hospital... to see if they're okay?" Sam commented.
"Sam, we have classes. We can't miss it." Last year, with everything that happened, Sam lost the year. That couldn't happen again.
But Sam still wasn't convinced. "We have one more class today... We go after that." Castiel kissed him on the cheek.
So they got back to the school. The class went too slow for Sam anxiety. He, like Castiel, couldn't pay any attention to what the professor was saying; they just waited for it to end.
When it was finally over, they went to the hospital. They asked for Adam at the reception and the lady told them to look for the psychologist at Paediatrics. They went down the hall until they find a door in which was written 'Dr. Anna Milton. Psychologist.'
Sam knocked and the doctor with red hair appeared on the door.
"May I help you?" she asked.
"We are looking for a boy named Adam Milligan. We were told he was here," Sam explained.
"Yes. He's here," The doctor confirmed.
"May we see him?" Sam asked.
"Are you from his family?"
"... no," Sam answered.
"Then I can't help you." she said a bit rudely.
"It was us who called the ambulance," Castiel said. "Please," Sam asked.
"I'm sorry, I can't give you any information." She was going to close the door.
"We just want to know if he's alright," Castiel insisted.
"Don't worry. I'll take care of him," She guaranteed.
"Do you know anything about his mother?"
"All I know is that they're still making her exams. There probably won't be any news until tomorrow." She said in a way to make them leave.
As she closed the door, Sam saw Adam at the back of the room, sitting on a couch and he surely didn't look good.
With nothing else they could do that day, they went home. After a stressful day they sat comfortably on the sofa after dinner, until it was time to go to bed.
