I just stood there and stared at this screen that had suddenly popped into existence in front of me. I then looked at Cardin and saw he was staring at something similar in front of him, his face showing a combination of muted shock and confusion that I could almost guarantee I mirrored perfectly. Our eyes met and I shifted to see what his message was.
You have accepted an offer to join clan Beoulve! Press OK to close.
Cardin, recovering from the surprise, simply touched the icon and we watched as the screen vanished. Taking that as a cue, I tapped the button and saw two new screens appear. One looked to be some sort of menu, but the other seemed to be a continuation of the previous message and start of what I could only call a tutorial for my ability.
As clan leader, you have the ability to look over the stats of your entire roster by going to the "Clan Overview" tab.
I did as instructed and an image of a roster appeared in front of me. It contained our profiles with a rough portrait of me and Cardin accompanying our respective info:
Clan Beoulve roster:
Jaune Beoulve, Lv. 4
HP: 97/97
Aura: 150/150
MP: 60/60
Class: Knight Lv. 1
Cardin Winchester, Lv. 7
HP: 140/140
Aura: 100/100
MP: 100/100
Class: Battle mage Lv. 2
Mulling over this information and ignoring Cardin's jokes about how I should get on his level, I looked at the other window, which had now updated.
To see a more in depth view of a character, tap the corresponding portrait, do so with one to continue.
I touched my own profile and saw a full body sprite of myself appear along with buttons to see equipment, skills and classes. I opened up the equipment tab to see what it would show.
Helmet: none
Armor: Steel Half-Plate
Shoes: Combat boots
Primary Weapon: Mephistopheles
Secondary Weapon: none
Accessory: none
Clothing: Beacon uniform
I glanced over it, noting the name of my weapon and the fact that I could carry a second one along with me. The other messages that accompanied it simply dealt with how to change my equipment and putting things into my inventory. I tested them by first trying to put my luggage into there, causing it to disappear into thin air which made Cardin jump back. I then tapped one the clothing tab and switched it to casual, enjoying the look on my companion's face as my uniform was replaced with my usual jeans and hoodie. I explained it to him and asked to see if he could do the same. He also managed to do so.
I was then instructed to go to the classes tab and after arriving at it was presented with four options. A message then popped up in front of me, snapping me out of my reverie.
To change you class, simply touch the one you want to shift to and confirm your choice. Look at you options and decide which of the options is best for you.
Warning: some equipment will not be compatible with certain classes.
Taking this as a sign took look over the ones available, I clicked on the icons of each of the four, getting a small description of what the class was and the abilities I would gain from it while also being asked whether I would like to change my class to the selected one. The options were.
Knight (Lv 1):
Walking tanks on the battlefield, these brave men and women learn abilities to control the aggression of enemies and protect those they fight with, sacrificing the ability to fight from afar.
Discipline: Heroism
Available Weapons: Swords (1h, 2h), Shields, Axes, Warhammers
Soldier (Lv 1):
Dedicated to the arts of war, people of this class gain the ability to stay calm under overwhelming odds while being able to bring the damage at any range.
Discipline: Arts of War
Available Weapons: Swords (1h), Spears, Rifles (normal, assault, sniper), pistols, SMGs
Battle Mage (Lv1):
Those who bend nature itself to their whims. They can summon jets of flame and calling down the wrath of the very heavens themselves, while also being able to fight up close.
Discipline: Black magic
Available weapons: Maces, Staffs, Wands, Daggers
Support mage (Lv1):
The unspoken heroes and saviors in battles, the people who take up this job dedicate themselves to healing and buffing the part. Make sure they stay out of range of enemies, though!
Discipline: White magic
Available weapons: Staffs, Wands, Bows
After looking over the jobs, I quickly eliminated the idea of becoming a mage of any type, seeing as Cardin was already one and the support mage would only be useful in a party with more than two members. I was left with the options of soldier and knight. If it had been two hours ago, I would have stayed as the knight class without any second guesses, but now the only thoughts that came to me about it were bitter ones that reminded me where trying to be that knight in shining armor got me. So in the end I ended up changing my class to soldier. I put getting some type of ranged weapon on my to-do list and looked at the next pop-up.
Congratulation on selecting your class! As a reward, you have gained one level in the soldier class and 100 AP to spend on abilities for it! Click on the skills tab to do so.
I did as it suggested and saw that I already had some abilities in my passive section.
1H Sword Proficiency (Lv. 2): The ability to use swords that only require one hand with some level of skill. This increases as your jobs that use 1H swords level up.
Rifle Proficiency (Lv. 2): The ability to use rifles of any type. Levels with job. Can be specialized at higher levels.
Pistol Proficiency (Lv. 2): The ability to use pistols of any type. Levels with job.
SMG Proficiency (Lv. 2): The ability to use SMGs of any type. Levels with job.
Leader's mind (MAX): As the founder and leader of your clan, you gain a resistance to mind altering effects such as spells or heavy emotional impulses.
Gamer's Body (MAX): You treat injuries like any game character would. Damage you take has no marks and affects your HP and Aura. This ability extends to all clan members.
Analysis (MAX): As a clan leader, you gain the ability to bring up basic information on other people at will.
After looking through everything, I checked and confirmed that Cardin's abilities, confirming that he had the class corresponding proficiencies and gamer's body. It showed that he also had 100 AP to spend on what I assumed would be more skills.
I was about to check that out when the craft we were in landed in the outskirts of the village Ozpin arranged for us to start out in. Located a way in the forest of Forever Fall, it was appropriately named Scarlet Knoll. It was a rather small place that relied on a high wall manned by an ever vigilant guard force. The two of us looked around for a while until we found something akin to an inn here. We entered the place, hoping to find a room. I came up to the desk in front. The person there, a kindly old woman who still looked like she could kick your ass, stated that the price was 20 lien per night. I shelled out the money and saw a new message appear as I did so.
Clan funds: 230 Lien
I took note of that and then decided to pull up the stats of the inkeeper, just to see how my analyze skill worked.
Maple Chester, Lv. 43
HP: 560/560
Aura: 700/700
MP: 250/250
Class: Black Knight Lv. 20
From this I learned two things: 1. What the analyze skill showed and 2. Do not screw with the inkeeper.
After we finished renting the room, Cardin and I threw our stuff in the room and agreed to go out to find somewhere we could get a meal and figure out what the hell had just happened to us over the last 2 hours.
A/N Thank you to all who viewed this and review, faved and/ or followed. I'm glad that you guys are so encouraging! I know this chapter is a bit of an info dump and may not be the most pleasant to read, but please bear with me. Now to answer some questions:
Grammarslayer: I wanted the gamer aspect of Jaune's ability to be based off of Final Fantasy Tactics, and thought that him being related to Ramza's family would be rather fitting.
Michaelgoodarrow: The timing of this piece is after the Breach incident. I know Jaune got at least one kill in that and to me that's why he isn't an even lower level.
Michealgoodarrow & Lukefang: On the issue of pairing, in my opinion that will not happen for a while, as the priority of the team as it is right now is more focused on surviving and being able to scrounge up enough money to keep having shelter and food every day. I will transfer to some of that stuff if the guys ever end up returning to Beacon (with the rest of their new team in tow). Thank you again for reading and see you in the next chapter!
