Exploring your new life
Chapter One: Great Past. Desperate Presence.
,,You can't be serious." He was actually sitting there calmly, his hands folded comfortably in the lap. ,,I am quiet serious about that," he said, entirely surprised. Of course, he just acted surprised. He knew exactly why I thought nothing of this idea. ,,Did you lost your mind?!" ,,No," he answered dryly. ,,But I would like to have you with me again. That's all." I sighed. It was difficult to stand up to him.
,,It's years ago. True be told, I was in good hands on her. But the U.S.S. Sander made me an offer. Good ship." It was hard to say these words, but I had no choice.
Of course I wanted to serve under him, again. To experience adventures and missions with him. ,,You know you don't want to accept this offer. Why? Why don't you want to transfer to my ship?"
,,Tss. Why? It is the flagship, dammit! You and I, we'd run a great risk! You are the only one who knows it. And this should remain the way it is."
Smiling slightly, he stood up. He angered me. He really had a talent for this. ,,Can't you just accept my no?" I pleaded. ,,No. I can't."
I hissed. ,,And why not, if I may ask?" My voice got quiet and threating.
I knew him since my academy time. He changed. Today, everyone praised him highly, he was an disciplined and decent Captain.
I could not deny that. But just a few people knew him as he had been. ,,Did you forget about the old days? As it once was?" He asked with a light in the eyes.
I had not forgotten anything. Yet I was not happy about this sudden talk. ,,Of course not. But Maxia wasn't a pleasure, was it?"
Everytime I only tought about this, a very bad feeling arrived in me. Surely it was not nice to remind him of this. But I wanted him to finally realize that we weren't in the good old time anymore. ,,No." He muttered. ,,But..." ,,No. We are no longer on the Stargazer. This starship is not the Stargazer. And we are no longer in the good old days. It will never be like it used to be."
Shocked at my words his eyes widened.
,,I know. But I don't want stop being a Captain yet. I don't want to sit on an old cargo ship and to give the same instructions everyday! And if you transfer to the Sander, you will only sit there watching the neutral zone border everyday!" Exhausted, he sank back into his chair.
I strechted my head. ,,Well. Then I will just monitor the borders. What is the problem? Someone has to do this job."
He shook his head. ,,But not you." How could he be so dense?
,,Do I have to repeat myself? I told you, there is more than a good reason why I cannot do my duty on this ship. It would be a great risk."
But he wouldn't give up. ,,Come back. Come on this ship."
I wanted it. I knew I wanted it. But I couldn't.
,,Why? Give me a reason." He looked me into the eyes. Those blue eyes I knew for so long. Those eyes which said more than words.
,,Because this ship needs the best. I need top officers. You are one of them, and you know it."
I saluted. ,,On your word, Jean-Luc."
