It was supposed to be simple. His orders were to either kill or capture the target, and he would get the herbs. He didn't expect the target to be awake. Nor the small girl that clung to the target.
"Inari onee-san?"
Judging by appearance alone, it was plainly obvious that they were not related by blood but with the way the girl spoke to the target, there was definitely a kinship between them.
"Go back to your room imouto," the target ushered the small child towards her room. She came back a few minutes later with a platonic expression on her face.
"The girl is my kazoku."
He had already figured that out by himself but he presumed she said it to convey a silent threat of 'if you harm her, I will drag you down to flaming, pits of Hell.' He couldn't blame her. He would do the same for his daughter.
The target's eyes locked with his own.
Will you kill me?
There it was. The unspoken question he wondered himself. Had it been anyone else he would not have hesitated in killing them but as his gaze measured hers, he had no doubt that she would fight, not for her own desire to stay alive but for that child she needed to protect.
Procas walked out of the castle without a second glance. From the balcony, Inari saw his form disappear in the distance. She wondered why he didn't try to kill her. Perhaps, he had a child? She didn't miss the look he gave Hika. It was the same look her nii-sama had when he first met her. A feeling of longing for family? She didn't know. She never did understand emotions. She only followed her instincts.
As Inari left the balcony, she wondered if she'd ever see that mercenary again. Probably not.
