Broken World

Chapter 2: Schools in and I already want to leave

A wide grin stretched across my face, "Morning Bubbles !"

She giggles back, clearly pleased with her new nickname, "Morning Benny."

I sigh overly dramatic, "If you where anyone else," i suppress a grin leaving the threat hanging...Phrasing! Whoops!

She gasps, "Huuuhh, you wouldn't do anything to meeeee would you ?" I cringed, her depression was clearly fuelled a small rain cloud in the back of her head, telling her that despite my joking tone i just might.

Best way to kill those thoughts ? To do right now what this worlds me should have done years ago. I grab her and pull her into a gentle hug, "course not, not ever."

I couldn't see her face but based on her feeling for the Main Character in game i could only presume she was blushing, "Be-Ben ? Wha-?"

"Sayori, for years now I have been awful too you, while you've always been there for me regardless of your obligations...well ive neglected you at nearly turn," I hug her tighter, feeling her head on my right shoulder, "I refuse to allow kind of...umm," i grit my teeth, losing words as i say them, "whats the word ?"

She spoke softly, trying to keep feeling out of her voice, "did your words get stolen again?"

"Treatment !" I finally conjuring up the word id been trying to remember for the past minute before giggling at her question, "yeah i guess they did."

I steel myself, "I wont allow my self to continue to treat you like your disposable because you're not, you are without uncertainty the best person in this damn town! So from here on out I'm going to be better, i cannot promise that'll be always, I've never been good at sticking to change, but I can promise that it will, most definitely happen."

"I care about you a great deal Sai, so i'm going to go whatever I uphold those words so, please, all those little issues that you've want to tell me about but you didn't think would be important, you can tell me now, even if its just to rant or has no cause at all, I am there when you need me. No question asked unless you want me too...then ask me too ...i guess.

She giggle at that last part and I began to feel a damp patch begin to form on my right shoulder, followed by a hoarse, yet happy whisper, "Be-n." She snuggled herself into the hug, flinging her arms around in me in such a fashion that I had to bring a foot back in order to stop us from kheeling over, "I didn't over sleep today."

"Hmm ?" I reply' "Ye-yeah, I could tell, actually your up early, well early for you at least, you okay?"

She pulled back, drying her tears with her sleeve and laughing ever so slightly, "of course i'm alright silly," she smiled a genuine smile, one I didn't expect to see so soon, "thank you for saying all that," clearly feeling better she ends the hug and steps back grinned mischievously, "I hope you didn't recycle that from one of the speeches you used to give Dinah."

I respond with an almost offended chuckle, "Hey! I wouldn't do that ! Each of my speeches are tailor made on the spot for my girls." I puff out my chest proudly.

"Ho oh oh," she taps my nose the grin stretching wider, "you have girls?"

I look to the sky and pinch the bridge of my nose, "not at all what i meant darling!"

She blushes with that final word, "Darling ?"

Oh right! I didn't uses those terms often when i was younger, it was something Id only really begun to use in the last year. I turn to and smile, "yeah, new thing i'm trying out, does it make you uncomfortable?"

She blushes and giggles but looks down, "No, I think its really cool you're trying new things," sensing an opportunity she looked back, "mmm speaking of trying new things maybe you should trying buying your darling breakfast today." She broke out the puppy dog eyes.

I smile and laugh back, "of course, but which Darling," I adopt a thinking pose, "have to be one at school eh?"

She gasped, "School ! We'll be late if we keep standing around !" She grabbed my hand and began jogging down the street.

"Hey," I exclaimed still laughing, " its only a little after eight, we have plenty of time." One of the good things my younger self had apparently gotten up and left for school around ten minutes earlier when Sayori start 'waking late', this meant she had to wake early so they could walk together, something both adamant to continue.

This meant that whilst the morning route was still a rush for her, they also wouldn't be late, that and the meeting of one of our other friends on the hill just across the road from the school. Dick move but i worked.

We began our walk toward the school, chattering all the time as we do, as we reach the bottom of the rather steep hill that it lay across the street from Sayori brought up the subject id been waiting for for a short time.

"By the way Benny," she began, "have you decided on a club to join yet ?"

I give her an awkward look and blush a little, "N-no, you know how I am around people but even if I wanted i doubt any would actually let me join. Well maybe the Gamer club Jimmy and Kei go too sometime but i wouldn't really fit in too well."

"Eh, that's not true !" Preprogrammed much eh ? "We'd be happy to have you in the Literature Club."Or not

I ignore those thought and chuckle, "I'm still not entirely convinced that your even in it!"

"Am too! I'm the vice president !" She shout back excitedly, "So you'll be able to join for sure !"

"Vice President exactly, you're a good peoples person my darling but I'm still not sure your much of a leader." We crossed the road and headed left, length ways along the school towards the shopping store so i could check my balance.

"Well I'm not really the leader, that's Monika, but I do help out with stuff!" She claims, i freeze at the name Monika, if shes as aware as she was in game this could be a major problem and one i hadn't put much thought into dealing with, that said Sayori was aware by the end of it and she hadn't show signs of knowing.

Well, other than showing up this morning. "Really, what kind of stuff?"

"Well I help out with tidying the class and moving the books and hu ...oh ! Settling arguments!" She grinned up at me.

I chuckle, "Guess I stand corrected, though I didnt know you where really into books."

She giggled at little nervous and scratched the back of her head, "Well I wasn't really but they other members helped me find things to read and I enjoy most of them, Yuri has some really creepy ones though."

I give back a rather crazed grin, "now that sounds up my ally."

She shakes her head, "I don't think so Ben, some are really scary, you wouldn't like them."

The grin deflates, as much as I may like the Idea of horror in practice I could barely tolerate it, " I suppose not...that being said Sai, If you ever want to read any of the books on my selves just ask."

Her eyes light up, "Your books ? But i thought no one was allowed to read them, you wouldn't even let Dinah!"

I chuckled, she wasn't wrong. I am or was extremely protective of my books, that being said, "Time to change eh, that Includes my old rules, just please don't pour your mums makeup on it this time."

"That was an accident !"

"Excuses, Excuses."

We head into the Store and navigate our ways to the bakery section, Sayori licks her lips and she grabs two bacon-cheese turnovers, "Hey, I never said I wanted one too."

She blushed, "oh umm, I'm really hungry this morning," she tapped her fingers together, "so I was hoping ..."

"That I'd buy you two ?"

She blushed, "Yeah," She replied bring out her most dangerous weapon. Those. Damn. Eyes.

"Hmm, alright, ill make you a deal." An idea already formed in my head, "Three of whatever you'd like, you turn off the puppy eyes for the rest of the day AND ill let you take me to your club."

Her eyes brightened immediately as the offer was presented, "Deal !" She exclaimed loud gathering up her various breakfast foods. "Yaaay! Benji is joining my club!"

"Ill consider it!" I replied head for a register with the joyous girl in tow. "You best not be puppying the back of my head."

I scan the breakfast I hear an, "aww," behind me as we begin leaving the store and turn back towards the school. I retrieve my phone from its pocket fort and glance at the time once again, 8:37, good.

We continued to talk as we walked the short length heading though the doors on one of the two side corridors that separated the reception, music, drama, the pool and the two PE halls from the rest of the building.

The school itself was divided like that. The prementioned block sat at the front at the bottom from a two flights of stone stairs that sat beside the bike sheds and the entrance to the community centre.

Behind the bike sheds, the sheds themselves being a fairly recent addition was the car park with extra space enough for the buses from the four nearby villages the high school also serviced.

The Reception was a few meter in front of the prementioned steps with an open corridor flowing though a waiting area to the corridor that connected to the Music and drama rooms.

The reception itself was also connected to the small of the two gyms that usually served as a stage for drama and music as well as to where assemblies where usually held, however when not in use by those functions it served as a normal gym. In the top left a little right of the gym entrance lay the offices of the head teacher and department heads as well as many of the standard teachers offices.

Slightly hidden in the bottom left was the prementioned corridor that connected to the drama and music rooms externally to the right, it was also worth noting that if one where to turn left and go down the short set of stairs and then turn right, one would be greeted by the first of the defacto student entrances.

If one where to continue going forward instead they would find themselves in another corridor, to the right of them would be the medical office as well as the school counsellors offices as well as the final of the teachers offices.

On the same side but at the other end of the corridor you'd find the two special needs classrooms, somewhere I was allowed to use and did if I found myself alone at school with everyone including Sayori was off for whatever reason.

To the left this time however you'd find the library. The library itself wasn't too big but it suited what little it needed to well enough. A line of Computers and a single printer/photocopier lined the northern wall, behind that lay for rows of bookcases catering to mostly teen and young adult fiction books with a single section of comic books and manga.

From there it widened out a bit, making the corridor outside irritatingly small. A glass office stood behind the librarians desk on the left wall, returned and new books in piles on both the office tables and the desk.

On the right wall was a single layer of three, three shelved bookshelves mostly containing dictionaries and encyclopedia, basically the books no one reads for fun. On the walls there was a weird amount of sports, science and car posters with magazine racks full of each stood a little out. In the space between the office and the book these bookshelves was four table, each with four seats around them.

Continuing south of this was the second entrance, with no office in the way the space closed up a little on the inside giving the outside corridor more room.

There was a few more meters of space following the door with was mostly taken up by the entire non-fiction section.

Spread across five side facing bookshelves and four straight facing pressed against the south wall and a single bookshelf half the length facing north at the very edge, where far too many books to even remember the order. It is worth noting that east most section held that final half length and as a result created a little cubbie hole with a single table and two seats.

Continuing though the corridor south having exited the library it would not be long before you the structure switched from stone and brick to glass and metal. This was where one of the two main side entrances where located as well as a second pair of double doors opposite.

The second led into the quad, a square area of tarmac in the centre of the school for those who choose not to leave during break or lunch. It was quite basic, five exits into it, one already cover, two others on either side of the cafeteria, the third was up some stair to the reception and the final connected to the Music/drama block by a ramp.

Also connected to that ramp, on the length of the northern wall was a small slightly elevated patch of garden, contained by an climbable potted stone wall, it wasn't well looked after but it was a fairly clean of weeds and rubbish.

In the centre where three rather tall, metal, white pole, the use of which was also nonexistent. Connected to the library and cafeteria, which much like the corridor doors lay exactly opposite to each other, where a set of rain roofs hanging over multiple wooden lunch benches.

Whilst the Quad was far from amazing it was a usually hang out spot for most students, most the younger years of S(secondary)One though Three.

Next we come to the other of the two side entrances, which was practically identical to its western counterpart only with more wood. Turning north here led to the cafeteria whilst turning south led to the main building.

The cafeteria was rather simple, a large, rectangular room with a small secondary exit leading to the quad. Two vending machines stood either end and along the entire east wall and a small way down on the north one on the same side, lay the serving areas divided into three sections. Hot food, cold food and the Sandwich station.

An entrance to another corridor lay here too, tucked in beside the sandwich station on the north wall, this time tucked into the south side. Walking up here up you'd find yourself on a marble slope. This was because you had just entered the lower community centre.

A little ways along there was a T in the path, turning left would send you to the gym and pool, the gym though the large wooden double doors on the left and the changing rooms and pool though the door on the right. Side note, once again continuing on this corridor would led to the reception after a few meters and after a couple more, a tall staircase and the community entrance.

Going south from the cafeteria and back though the corridor you would find yourself in the main and three stories of class rooms.

The first and ground floor stood mostly as the sciences with secondary focus on computing labs and home economics facilities with woodworking and art attached to an expansion connected the the east most corridor.

The second floor was most English, Maths and Languages and most often the most travelled part of the school, it was often best to wait several minutes before headed in and/or out of one of these otherwise you'd get trapped in crowds.

The third and final floor was much the same as the others, with History, Geography and Modern Studies as the main focus with extra classrooms for Geology, Religious and Moral Education(RME) and Personal, Social and Health Education(PSE). Because of how high it was it was also the only floor you could see the building from

I could already tell however, thing where not going to complete the same as I remember. Well not yet at any rate, but I had notice a few small things. The first was the uniforms, they where much the same as before but some parts of the colour scheme had changed for the women. Instead of black shirt or trousers it was now navy blue, plus the addition of the dark orange over shirt and the blue string tie instead of a normal tie.

The blazer was also slightly different for both genders, it remained black however this time with the school logo on the left breast instead of the arm. Guys hadn't gotten off perfect either, the tie had remain unfortunately and the formal white polo shirt was now all dark orange. It was hardly comparable however.

There was also an abundance of strangely coloured hair, which despite my better judgement i was dubious to call dyed, and unfortunately my headaches had only just begun.

As we walked up to the side entrance ask why I had stopped just to stare at the building for about five minutes. I smiled about and told her i was reminiscing.

We were about to enter the quad to meet up with a small group of friends before headed to class when Sayori pulled me away into the main building instead.

"Eh, Sayori? Where you kidnapping me too?" She turns back with a bright smile.

"I'm going to show you the club room in case I forget to pick you up!"

I grin and retrieve my schedule, "well if you forget ill just come to you, wha-do you have last?"

She does much the same, "Umm, Geography with Mr Steward, you?"

"Oh hes kinda funny, "I laugh, " I got physics with Miss Brandle."

She smiles and continues to lead me down the corridor, I look up curiously, noticing that we where still head forward, yet to turn up the stairs or into the first floors class room block.

"Acht!" I fall to be knees as an extension seeming generate into my vision straight ahead.

"Ben !" I hear Sayori cry out in distress as more memories flood my mind, simpler this time, weaker.

The corridor ahead was a recently built extension that attached to the first and second floors. Fourteen new class rooms in general. Eight added to the first floor consisting of four computer labs and four normal classrooms. Six on the second floor with two more maths, two English and now apparently Japanese and Mandarin in the last two classrooms, bumping the taught languages up to five. The others being French, German and Spanish.

Oddly enough it would seem this new building had also added roof access to the school, with students able to access a refurbished roof from the new second floor extension, with stairs leading up form the first floor roof, to the second and then the third.

All this and they STILL hadn't bought the climbing wall we have now fully fundraiser-ed it THREE TIMES NOW.

I had also been made aware of other changes, the club scene for example. For one all of the new classrooms barring two on the first floor and two on the second, doubled as club rooms for the more official clubs.

Officially the only club that got two rooms was the Computing club but that was in fact two clubs, Gaming and Animation, which operated like a duel monarch of Austria-Hungary.

It would also seem the rule from the game requiring four members for a club to be officially had carried over from the game.

This was not the final nail but at this point, from what Sayori had mentioned on the way to school I was convinced that this was a 'memory world' that had been merged with DDLC, the only character existence yet to be confirmed was Natsuki's.

Small other changes now made sense, the hair styles and uniforms as well as the strange abundance of anime-style culture. The quad garden and surrounding school areas had also been revamped in my memories, The Gardening club having become the ecological equivalent of the Soviet Union.

The club scene had also not been the best thing school had apparently done. Significant divides had propped up in the student body. In a strange way it was almost distopian, the student council having more or less collapsed giving way to private clubs looking to claim school resources off screen in some terribly exciting 'Divergent' parody, though how else was it going to go in Scotland.

The school had also seeming expanded its exchange program, no longer was it just students from Botswana but also America, India, Japan and several European countries as well, with the students staying a full year rather than summer classes and some choosing to join a program that allowed them to stay in the country from S3 to S6.

I knew this made little sense and yet at the same time it seemed completely normal, this was connected to Sayori somehow. Maybe she was an early applicant, her mother was rarely around due to her job ...her job that involved travelling to all the aforementioned countries.

She was an early applicant, a test student as the daughter of the woman running mass exchange programs all over the world. Information was still missing but still, but still sense was slowly being made.

This time my memories where little, taking up only the last two years of my life and even still much didn't change and less than a minute after it started it disappeared.

I clutched the had of the terrified woman beside me and tried a smile, "Hey, Sayori ? I think I'm okay, just a little dizzy." I chuckled, "didn't eat this morning."

She latched herself onto me, "wah, you scared me bad just there you meanie!"

"Oi!" I nudge her shoulder giggling, "I didn't exactly do it on purpose!"

"Hmpt." She lets go and proceeds to lead me to one of the ending rooms, standing by the fire exits, the room number, 129 just beside the wooden door frame of the standard wooden door with a little window in the middle itself.

Worries dissuaded she turns to me with a bright smile, "This is it !"

I smile back, " I'm still coming to get you after classes." My smile falters, "it'd be more fun that way besides eh...I'm a little scared." I rub the back of my head my nerves act up all over at the prospect of meeting new people.

"Eh ?! You shouldn't be, I mean Natsuki, "And theirs the conformation, "can be a little mean sometimes but she wouldn't hurt a fly."

"I'm sorry I haven't said anything but I've got a fear of crowds." This wasn't actual true for the memories of this world but it was a real life fear I had, after all an organised enough crowd could to be a cult and i don't have to go far to explain why that is scary, especially with someone like Monika in charge, "and it would really help if I was shown in by someone I trust.

Of course in game there was only four members of the club but the two worlds so mixed it was entirely possible more had been added to the roster.

Sayori's eyes went wide, "You do ?! Since when ? Did something happen?" She grabbed my hand.

I raised my other over hers, smile softly and pat it gently. "I'm fine, I've always been weary of them but I guess its a fear I've only recently realised I had."

She worried look did not dissipate. "Are you sure ? You know you can say anything, I wont judge you for anything!"

"It something i'm dealing with, a little rain cloud but one that dies if someone is there." I stroke her hand with my thumb. "Speak of which, are you alright ? Are any rain clouds getting to you?"

"Wh-what?" Shock and worry spread across her face as she looked at me. "N-no no, I'm fine, my rain clouds are all in check!" She smile up at me with her bubbly mask but knowing the game, knowing her and knowing depression I wasn't convinced.

This was a critical junction, if I push her to hard it'll only push her closer to the edge so too speak, too soft and she wont think its worth my time. Reveal her telltales and she'll cover them up but let them show and other people will notice, Monika will notice.

I could only think of one thing to do as I gave her a serious look. "I don't believe but if it get serious I'm here, whenever, wherever you need me. No matter how big or small, if you're hurting come find me, " I kiss her forehead once again, "Ill chase your rain clouds away just like you did for me."

I smile her for a short while before I take her hand and turn on my heal. "Now!" I exclaim aloud, "I believe someone hasn't finished their homework and would be chuffed if the gal he just bought three turnovers for would help him!"

She looks surprised at the turn around before laughing loudly, "Nope ! Not until we get you something to eat ! You almost passed out !"

I grin back, "Mama Sayori ? How I've missed you." She giggles and drags me to the cafeteria, "Im gonna have to pay too aren't I ?
