Chapter 2: Dough/Peeta's POV

Two things. 1) Mockingjay comes out in a week (!) 2) Chicago is probably going to have another brutal winter (cries).

Anyway, please enjoy this next chapter! I'd love to know what you think.

The Capitol sent the highest quality equipment money could buy, but I still haven't taken them out of their boxes. When I first moved back, Haymitch was the one who helped me move the unwelcome gifts to an empty cupboard in my kitchen where they sit to this day. Dusty, unused, and from a place I try not to think about.

My fingers work through a mixture of flour, eggs and milk. When we played "real or not real" I vaguely remember her saying cheese buns were her favorite.

They're all I make these days. I crumbled a chunk of cold butter, working it softly in with the rest of the mixture. The first time I tried to approach her with them she flinched like a wounded animal. After all that happened, I don't blame her. But it still stung, seeing her pull away from me like I had shocked her.

That's when Sae suggested the tin. She gave me a small dented one she had managed to save from the Hob. It was just big enough to fit two cheese buns inside without crushing them.

I dropped the dough into a ceramic bowl, covering the top with a towel. From the next plot over, I heard a door slam and I whirled my head around, hoping to catch a sight of her…

I could see her peeking out from behind a window curtain. Our eyes met, and I imagined her letting out a small gasp before the curtains were pulled tightly shut and she was gone.

It's later that day when I wander over, two piping hot cheese buns in my grasp. I open the tin she's left on the front porch and gently nestled them inside. I treat them like glass, because I don't want to crush their puffed up tops and I want her to see them perfectly formed.

I consider knocking on her door but I don't. For now, the tin will have to do. I hear the door open and shut as I hobble away and when I look back, the small tin is gone.

So this was a little longer, whew! I'm still trying to figure out the appropriate length I want these chapters to be, but I hope you enjoyed! Things will hopefully pick up soon. As always, reviews are more than welcome!
