Chapter 2- comfort from tragedy

(Dallas POV)

Sylvia and I had started dating three weeks after she met the gang. We had to be careful cause her dad didn't want her to have a boyfriend yet.

One day she came to school in dark clothes, an you could tell she had been crying.

She rushed through the hallways to get to her next classes an I couldn't catch her through the crowds. I finally stopped her outside of the lunch room.

I let the worry slip into my voice when I asked her what was wrong.

"Nothing is wrong Dal, I'm just fine." She said the lie with a smile.

"Syl, I can tell you've been crying. What's wrong?" I asked her again.

She looks around the busy lunch room,

"Can we go somewhere else to talk?" She responded to my question with one of her own,

"Sure, come on" I said opening the door for her.

I wasn't very often Sylvia skipped school. If she asked me to leave, it must be something really bad.

We sat down on the old car bench under the tree at the lot where my gang hung out.

Sylvia sighed an put her head in her hands. She wiped her hand down her face, took a deep breath an said

"Momma died last night."

I felt like someone just punched all the air out of my lungs.

I really liked . She was a sweet lady. She knew me an Syl were dating, but she didn't tell her dad. She always tried to get me to come to church, I never did.

"How?" Was all I could respond.

The tears started to fall from her eyes again as she told me that her momma past away from a stroke.

Sylvia was a strong girl, but now it was my job to comfort her. I wrapped my arms around her as she cried into my shirt. I held her as the sobs turned into sniffles.

"Dallas, is it going to get better?" She asked as if I truly knew answer.

I paused trying to think of how to answer.

"It's going to take a long time, but it's going to be okay."

"Okay" she said as I watched the daylight fade away.

"I'll take you home, it's getting dark an I don't want your dad upset cause you disappeared." I tell her as I help her up.

The fourteen year old Sylvia mumbles "I doubt he even knows I'm gone..."

I pretended I didn't hear it as she waves goodbye an the front door closes.

Sorry y'all, I know its been forever since I posted! I'm on break for about two weeks now, so I should get to post more often. Please review!
