Chapter One: Aboard the Titanic
The year was 1912. We had just boarded the RMS TITANIC and were going to make or way to New York, where my father and Mr. Masen hoped to start a new business together. I was a little girl who was nervous about what the future would hold. I was glued to my mother's side, and she found it very amusing. I was scared, the ship was huge and I knew I could get lost easily. Passengers from all classes were waving their loved ones farewell. It was a very emotional sight, and I was glad my parents were with me.
I held my mother's hand and we watched how the land in front of us, the land we had walked through not long ago, became smaller and smaller, until it wasn't there anymore. We were surrounded by water and the farther we moved away, the more nervous I became. What if something bad happened? What if we got lost at sea? Why did we have to move? We were just fine living in England. We had everything we needed.
I heard my father chuckle from behind me, "I can hear the wheel turning in your head, Bella. Do not worry, this ship is unsinkable, nothing will happen."
My mother turned and smiled, "Your father is right, there s nothing to worry about. Why don't we find the Masens? I'm sure your father and Mr. Masen have matters to discuss, and you can play with little Edward."
I looked up at my mother, I hadn't played with Edward in a while, and he would distract for a while. Besides, anything would be better than my mother giving me lessons. I nodded slowly and we began to make our way toward the first class area, looking for the Masens. It took us awhile but we found them eventually. The Masens were outside the dining area speaking to other members of first class. Edward Jr. was standing beside Mr. Masen when he spotted us walking toward them. He tugged on Mrs. Masen's dress and pointed toward us.
"Edward! You do not point at people. It is incredibly rude," Mrs. Masen scolded him.
Edward sighed, "Sorry mother."
My mother smiled, "Hello Elizabeth. Have you found your rooms to your taste?"
"The rooms are quite lovely Renee, they are very spacious. Why, I fear you could even get lost in them! Hello Miss Bella, how are you feeling?"
I looked up at her and her a little smile, "I feel fine Mrs. Masen. Thank you."
"Bella was wondering if it would be alright for Edward Jr. to play with her," my mother stated, "since they won't have much time once we arrive at New York."
Mrs. Masen smiled down at Edward, "Well, what do you say Edward? Would you like to play with Miss Bella?"
Edward nodded furiously.
My mother and Mrs. Masen laughed. They found it endearing when Edward and I wanted to spend time together. They were always whispering about how we will eventually fall in love and marry each other., but I don't think that's going to happen, Edward picks his nose too much.
Edward and I had spent the day playing until our mothers had called for us. My mother had told me that a wonderful opportunity had presented itself to us. We would be dining with the captain of the ship. I really didn't see the big deal about it. All he had to do was steer the wheel in the right direction. My mother had laughed. She always seemed amused by my antics. All I knew was that I was going to be incredibly bored while the adults talked. I really hope Edward doesn't talk himself out of having to come.
The dinner had been boring, and Edward hadn't talked himself out of going. We had sit for two hours waiting for the adult to finish their conversation. They cannot be that interesting, they're grown ups, and grown ups are boring.
The days dragged on. Edward and I hadn't been allowed to play any more. We were too busy with our lessons to see each other. Soon, the fated day of April 14 arrived. I had woken up and done my chores like the previous days. All the passengers on board had expected this to be a normal day, but it wasn't.
I had been asleep when a pounding came at the door, and for a few minutes, all I could hear was rushed whispering until my mother came into my room, "Bella! Change into something warm and put on the life jacket."
I stared at my mother and slowly did as she had instructed. She had gotten one of my bags and was filling it with father came in soon after and stuffed piles of cash into the bag. My mother was close to tears and my father was trying to comfort her, although I could see it was in vain.
Walking toward them, I tugged on life jacket and stopped in front of them. My father kneeled down and grasped my shoulders, "Bella, there is something happening right now but I don't want you to worry," he grabbed the bag from my mother's hands, "this bag is filled with items that are very valuable. Do not let them out of your sight or grasp. Keep them with at all times. It is very important that you do. Understand?"
My father gave me his hand to hold and I took it, while he offered his elbow to my mother. We walked out of our room with urgency and headed toward the lifeboats. Even with my warmest jacket on, I was still cold, my father gave me hs jacket and my mother her gloves and hat.
"Women and children first! Please let the women and children through!"
"Renee!"
"Elizabeth!"
They hugged each other and quickly tucked Edward and I into their sides. My father and Mr. Masen were discussing something quietly and furiously. They were waving their hands around so much, I thought they were going to hit someone. My father and Mr. Masen turned to us, "Alright, the ship is sinking. We have to get you four onto the lifeboats. Come one, hurry." Mr. Masen tugged Mrs. Masen and Edward forward.
"What about you Charlie? You have to come! You can't leave us," my mother cried.
My father pleaded, "Renee, you have to get in the lifeboat."
I didn't want to leave my father behind, I wanted him to come with us, but in the end, my wishes were ignored.
I can't say I remember much about that day, I was so young and there were so many people. While my parents had been arguing, the Masens had climbed into the lifeboat, with Mr. Masen remaining behind. However, with all the chaos the passengers had created, Mr. Masen had been pushed forward and had fallen into the lifeboat his wife and child were on. It was too late for them to try to send him back on board of the Titanic, so they had let him stay on the lifeboat. They survived, but I can't say the same for my parents.
While my parents had been arguing, one of the officers had grabbed me and settled me down on one of the lifeboats. My father had then pushed my mother onto the lifeboat. The lifeboat began moving away from the Titanic as the officers moved quickly. I clutched the bag my father had given me close to my chest and cried for him to come on board, but it was too late.
My father stared down at me and smiled at me one last time. I was ten, and as the light hit my father's face directly, I got a clear view of him. That is something I am never going to forget, the realization that I was never going to see him again. My mother was beside me screaming, the other ladies on the lifeboat tried to console her, but she ignored them. I don't know what she was thinking, but as the lifeboat was being lowered, she jumped out, and grabbed a hold of the railing of the Titanic. The gentlemen that was standing there pulled her into the Titanic, and I was left alone in the lifeboat, huddled next to a woman who tried to comfort me.
My mother had been given a chance to survive, but she had dived back into the Titanic and left me alone. I was ten, and I was scared. After that, I don't remember much. I had spent all my time crying. The Titanic sank, and it took my parents with it. I was alone.
So, Bella's mom pulled a Rose and jumped out of the lifeboat in order to be with the man she fell in love with. I know, she left Bella alone, but she wasn't thinking straight, she was panicking. I hope you enjoyed the chapter.
