A Glimpse Into the Future

"Sometimes, there was also a flash of dark green. Maybe it was a flag of some sort?"

Petra stood in the small kitchen of the house she shared with her dad. The 16 year old hummed quietly as she busied herself with making tea while she waited for Alain. Thump, thump, thump. A sad smile appeared on the teen's face as her dad's uneven footsteps neared the kitchen. "Good morning dad," she greeted with her usual smile.

"Always so full of life in the mornings," Alain mused before planting a quick kiss on his daughter's forehead before a delicate hand attempted to swat him away. Petra gave her dad a sarcastic scowl before handing him a cup of tea.

"Bothersome old man," Petra mumbled with a cheeky grin before twisting around to face the table her father now sat at. The kitchen consisted with only simple utilities; a sink, stove, multiple cabinets, various pots and pans, and a round cherry wood table near the back wall of the kitchen. Personally, Petra thought the second best view in the house was from the window next to the table. The glass panes providing the perfect view of the backyard garden they owned. But of course, the best view was from Petra's upstairs bedroom window that provided a view of the town street, especially when the Scouting Legion returned from expeditions.

The ginger haired teen poured herself a cup of tea then sat down at the table with Alain. She shifted around in her seat until she was comfortable. "I was thinking about today dad, and I was wondering if you would walk to the park with me. You know, for mom's birthday today," she suddenly spoke up. True, it was her mother's birthday today, but she also had another topic in mind. She watched her dad carefully. His lips her pursed and his gaze was locked on the brown liquid in the teacup he held.

"Of course my dear," Alain answered after a lingering moment of silence, "It would do us good to get out of this stuffy house." If it was even possible, Petra's smile grew brighter. She reached across the table, nearly spilling her cup of tea, and cupped her hands over her father's. "I'll go get ready then!" she exclaimed, already in the process of fixing her hip-length hair into a waterfall braid.

After a few minutes, Petra walked down the steps that lead upstairs and her room. She wore a simple white sundress. The dress itself was strapless and ghosted over the top of her knee. Her feet atoning white ballerina flats. "Alright! Let's go," the petite female called before heading towards the front door. Something furry rubbed against her shin while she waited for her father. Looking down, she discovered a black and white cat staring up at her with green eyes. "Oh, hey Domino. Sorry, but we'll be back later," Petra said affectionately while picking up the ex- alley cat in arms. The sight of her father walking out of the kitchen resulted in the copper haired girl placing Domino on the living room couch. She bid the brooding cat a finally goodbye before closing the door behind Alain as the pair walked into town.

Petra followed behind her dad at a slower pace than usual. Amber eyes were locked on Alain's shoulder as he walked; noticing how every step he took resulted in one shoulder higher than the others. She knew that Alains' leg has long since healed from the terrible break all those years ago, but he still bore the evidence with a permanent limp. It was a faint limp, nobody except Petra ever noticed it, but it was still there. Every step he took filled her heart with another once of guilt. 'If only I realized what my dreamt meant,' Petra thought while watching people chat with Alain before continuing to walk to their destination, 'And I won't screw up again.'

After living for sixteen years, Petra finally realized what her dreams where. They were always events in the near future. They were also so real, as if it wasn't a dream at all. Well, dreams at night and sort visions during the day, often followed by terrible migraines in the day. Lately, Petra's visions were constantly haunted by short leather jackets and knee high boots. It was like any other vision she's had before. It wasn't informing like the carriage dream, but it was more beckoning, like she was being called towards the soldier's uniform. Sometimes, there was also a flash of dark green. Maybe it was a flag of some sort? Either way, the petite young lady was determined to figure out what her visions meant.

Grabbing Alain by the hand, Petra led her father to a bench. The giant silhouette of Wall Rose in the distance nearly overpowered the happy cheers of the children playing around the park only feet away from the pair. Alain sat down on the bench and patted the wood beside him. Petra complied to his request by sitting down with her body tilted to face him. "You know, I met you're mother in this park," Alain said with a sigh, running a hand through his dirty blonde hair, "She would be proud of who you've become."

Petra sat up a bit straighter at the mention of her mother. That was a topic her father didn't talk about often. All she knew was that Chantal died giving birth to her, and that Chantal's looks and personality was nearly identical to her's. Alain rarely spoke of their past together, so it was a subject Petra tried to avoid. A soft chuckle off to her right interrupted her thoughts. Wide honey eyes refocused on the man sitting off to their left. "But I have a feeling you have something to tell me Petra," Alain sighed while turning his head towards his daughter. His hazel eyes studied her sun-kissed face while waiting for an answer.

Petra twiddled her thumbs before tucking a strand of long ginger hair behind an ear. "I've been thinking about this for a while, dad, and I made up my mind. I want to offer up my life for humanity. I'm going to become a solider."

Something resembling horror flashed through Alain's eyes. "Petra…you can't be serious."

"Forgive me, or not, it's your choice, but my opinion won't change. I'm going to join as a trainee before my eighteenth birthday. This is something I know I have to do."
