The Hobbit: An unexpected journey

Disclaimer: I don't own The Hobbit, I only own Nàin.

Chapter 2

The Shire was… beautiful! Small houses built into the green hills with small gardens filled with thousands of beautiful flowers and plants, small lamps with tiny candles in them were lit all over the Shire, enlightening the small roads as the evening already had turned dark with star- and moonlight being the only light that helped Nàin see, other than the lamps. Although it wasn't as calming and elegant as the Dwarven halls in the mountains, it was still a cosy place to be in. Nàin knew that this was a place where she could spend quite some time. Perhaps not live as living in larger houses already was boring to her. She missed the mountains and was therefore delighted when she had gotten the letter from Thorin that they were going to reclaim Erebor.

It was starting to turn cold outside and her feet ached. She wanted nothing more than to see the sign that the wizard, Gandalf the Grey, would've placed on the door so that she could go inside to the warmth and rest her feet. Dwarves were strong and were capable of walking quite a lot of miles without growing tired, but Nàin was a lady after all. She had never been all that much like the other Dwarves either.

No, Nàin would not be useless and a burden to the company. She may not be the strongest of Dwarves or the smartest, but she was still a good fighter and could cook. Plus, taking care of wounds and help people was something that came to her naturally. Almost like Oin. Kili and Nàin used to spar together when they were younger. She always won. However, that might have been because Kili let her win since she had seen him win against much more challenging competitors.

When Nàin finally saw a blue light on one of the round doors, she smile and skipped up the steps to the door. Voices could be heard from inside and her smile grew even more as she knew that those were the voices of her friends.

Before knocking on the door, she took of her hood which made her long, dark hair flow freely down her back. In her hair, she had two braids. One that she had earned when she was of age, and one that she had earned when Thorin became her guardian.

*Knock, knock, knock*

The voices from inside quieted down as she knocked. Angry footsteps were heard walking towards the door and she put on her most adorable and sweet smile as the door flung open in front of her. A male Hobbit had opened the door wearing a light coloured shirt, dark trousers and braces on. His feet wore no shoes, only a bit of curly hair that reminded her of the hair on his head, though it was thicker and even curlier on his head than on his feet. His face had been crunched up in annoyance when he had opened the door. However, as soon as his eyes had landed on Nàin, his face softened and turned into a confused one.

"Nàin, at you service," said Nàin while curtseying before the Hobbit, her hands lifting up her skirts slightly and her head bowing politely.

"A la- Bilbo Baggins… at yours," said the Hobbit, making Nàin smile an even wider smile.

The Hobbit opened the door even wider and stepped aside in order to let her in. As she did walk in, the voices and laughter from her companions echoed through the hall from wherever they were which made Nàin raise her eyebrows slightly in amusement.

"Thorin must be late," said Nàin to no one in particular which caused Bilbo to raise his eyebrows after he'd closed the door. "You have a lovely home Master Baggins."

"Th-Thank you," said Bilbo, nodding his head while a faint blush appeared on his cheeks.

Slowly, Nàin took of her coat which revealed her clothes. She wore a long beige dress that ended at her ankles, around her waist a brown leather belt was strapped which caused her curves to show more. Her boots were covered in mud as was most of the lower part of her dress. She didn't care though, as she had trousers and a blouse in her backpack to wear on the quest. Around her neck, she had several necklaces. One that Maybeline had made for her and two made out of silver that once had belonged to her mother. Around her left wrist, she had two bracelets. One was also made out silver just like her necklaces while one was a leather bracelet. The leather bracelet was a gift from Maybeline as well. Nàin had showed her how to make bracelets out of leather straps one day and two days later, Maybeline had given her this bracelet as a present.

She loved the bracelet with all her heart as it reminded her of the poor child.

Hidden away from sight, she had several daggers. They were hidden underneath her dress and in her boots as she did have to be able to defend herself somehow.

"The others are in the dining room," said Bilbo as he politely took her coat from her hands, a smile on his face.

"Thank you," said Nàin before she started to follow the laughter of the others.

Bilbo carefully and with a blush on his cheeks, followed her with his eyes as she walked away from him.

..::**::..

"By my beard!" exclaimed Dwalin, the first one to notice her standing in the doorway, smiling at her old friends. "Look who's here!"

Immediately, everyone else looked over at Nàin while Dwalin walked over to her and grabbed her hand, kissing it while smiling widely at her.

"Dwalin… long time no see," said Nàin as Dwalin released her hand.

"That is true, my lady," said Dwalin while several other Dwarves greeted her in the same way. "You truly have grown!"

"The last time I saw you, you were but a wee lassie," said Balin from his seat around the already messy table.

Kili almost ran over to her and nearly made her fall to the floor as he embraced her, laughing. He lifted her up from the floor and spun her around, earning a surprised squeal from Nàin as he did.

"I've missed you, my lady," said Kili as he put her down again. "You never said goodbye…"

"I didn't know how," said Nàin, her smile faltering as he said this.

"Come on, let's eat dinner," said Kili, placing his arm around her shoulders and leading her over to his seat next to Fili.

She was pressed In between Kili and Bombur, dodging food as it came her way while she ate her dinner. She laughed along with her friends and even threw some food herself after some encouraging by Kili.

"Can't believe the pretty lady is back," said Kili as he looked over at her.

"Unfortunately for you, yes," said Nàin, taking a sip from her ale. "Now, I can beat you in everything again."

"Well, everything apart from arrow shooting," said Kili proudly.

"If I recall correctly, I can beat you in that as well," said Nàin, smirking.

"Not anymore! You see, uncle has taught me everything he knows," said Kili, his face showing no other emotions but seriousness.

Nàin bit her lip and nodded. "As I was saying…"

Kili nudged her, laughing. "Careful when he's around!"

They both laughed as they did the rest of the evening. From time to time, Fili would join them. However, it would mostly be Kili and Fili talking then as Fili barely even looked at Nàin. It made her heart ache every time he ignored her though she had known that Fili wouldn't react positively towards her. Not after what she had done before she had left 20 years ago.
