Disclaimer: I do not own Merlin. It is owned by BBC I have just taken it upon myself to make the ending better and keep the story going. I make no profit from this fanfiction. This is my first fanfiction so please be very critical and tell me what I can improve upon. WARNING: Some of the dialog is taken exactly from the show but once again I do not own it. Percival's POV:
I raced as fast as I could praying that I would make it back to Camelot in time. Gaius would be able to help Gwaine he just had to. The entire way Gwaine kept murmuring "leave me" but I wouldn't, couldn't leave him behind. He is my friend and comrade if I have life in me I would never leave a fallen man behind.
Finally, after what seemed like forever I rode into the citadel. Fellow knights rushed over and helped take Gwaine off the horse.
"Hurry he needs the physician!" I exclaim but there was no need we were already rushing towards Gaius' chambers.
No one asked any questions, but I knew they would soon. Shame flooded my body as I thought of the responses I would have to give. I foolishly let Gwaine talk me into going on our own to stop Morgana and now his life was in danger. I knew I should have let someone know of our quest, but my pride got the best of me.
"What happened?" Gaius asked.
"I-I don't know. We went out to Brineved to look for Morgana… when she knocked us unconscious. When I awoke I heard Gwaine screaming and after I was able to release myself I found him like this…and he told me the Morgana is headed for Avalon."
"What?! How could you two be idiotic enough to try and attack Morgana on your own!" Sir Leon yelled.
"I'm sorry, I was blinded by hatred and Gwaine was able to convince me to go on our own. I knew I shouldn't have. I knew we should have taken others but Gwaine was so angry because of Eira that he left, and I couldn't let him go alone. I'm sorry. Gaius can you help him?" I said guiltily.
Gaius inspects the many bites Gwaine has around his body.
"Well this looks to be the work of the Nathair. A serpent who bite causes unimaginable pain to the victim's soul. In extended periods of time the pain could be deadly, but the Nathair's bite is not. Gwaine needs plenty of rest and drafts to keep his strength up." Gaius walked over to the shelf and took several vials of a yellow liquid and a jar of some green concoction. "Percival, I need you to stay here with Gwaine. There are many others wounded that need me more than Gwaine. When he regains consciousness even for a second give him one of these vials and make sure he does not move. One vial every hour even if you must force him to drink. He needs it, he needs his strength to fight the pain. You will also rub the green poultice on each of the snake bites to ensure he does not get an infection. I will return after the others have been attended to."
I nodded and took the vials. I would not leave Gwaine's side until he was fully recovered. I felt and extreme guilt over Gwaine's condition. If only I had convinced him to take more men with us or to not go at all Gwaine would probably be at the tavern right now instead he is near death lying on Gaius' bed.
"I swear to you Gwaine you will get better. I will not let you die." I proclaimed. I opened the jar with the poultice and started to place some on each of Gwaine's bite just as Gaius instructed.
Arthur's POV:
We were soaring through the sky on a dragon… that a magical Merlin controls… with a sleeping Morgana. This day could not get any stranger. I have accepted Merlin and his magic, but I have a feeling that the people of Camelot will not be so welcoming.
Merlin and I have been keeping a close eye on Morgana. She kept mumbling things in her sleep, things that really scared me. It sounded like someone was forcing her to do things. I feel a great need to help her, after all she is my sister no matter what she has done. She has magic, she has betrayed me, tried to kill me, she taken over Camelot, these are all reasons I should execute her or at least through her in the dungeon, but I can't.
Merlin said that he believed that something or someone had her under some type on control forcing her to do things against her will and after seeing the black substance that came out of her head I believe that too.
I felt a nudge on my ribs taking me from my thoughts. I looked up and I could see Camelot we were so close already. It would have taken them days by horse or even weeks on foot.
Gently the dragon, Kilgharrah, descends onto a clearing near Camelot. I move to pick up my sister and as a lift her she mumbles something that sounds like "it tastes strange" and I really start to worry.
As we got off the dragon he sat up straight and looked at Merlin.
"Thank you for taking us to the Lake of Avalon and for bringing us back to Camelot."
"Thank you, young warlock for healing me. You are the last dragonlord and have a duty to us dragons, but what you have done for me is beyond a dragonlord's duty. I am indebted to you in a way even I cannot fully comprehend." Kilgharrah looked down in… shame? "I give you my word Merlin I will find Aithusa and I will help her find her way back to the light. She has been traumatized and will need help and guidance not only from me but also from you."
"Of course, I will do whatever is needed to help her." Merlin quickly responds.
"The young dragon has formed a strong bond with the witch I fear she will play a part in her healing."
"We will do whatever we can to help. You can count on my help and support as well." I speak up.
"You will be the best king this land has ever seen young Pendragon. I feel I should leave you to your kingdom and your wife. I will be one call away young warlock should you need me." Kilgharrah said. He bowed to Merlin, took a long sniff, and flew off towards the north.
"We should get Morgana to Gaius." Merlin says.
"I don't want to put her in the dungeons, but how do we make sure she does not harm anyone if she is still under… whoever's control." I reply as I start walking towards Camelot.
"She is already in magic blocking chains. So, you really think that Morgana is under someone's control." Merlin says as he falls in step with me.
"Yes, Morgana could not have done all of those horrible things of her own free will. As a child she was so kind and compassionate. Something happened to her I know it and I need to help her."
"You know you have my support Arthur."
"I know Merlin. Thank you. No harm will come to you because of your magic Merlin. I cannot promise you that the people of Camelot will welcome magic with open arms, but I can assure you that as long as I am King no one under my command will do you harm."
"There is nothing more I can ask Arthur. All I need, all I have wanted is your acceptance."
That warmed my heart. I really did not want Merlin getting hurt because other people were afraid of what he could do. Everything Merlin has ever done has been for the benefit of Camelot. For my benefit. Merlin is the reason that I no longer hate magic, the reason that I no longer fear magic. He showed me that magic is only as dangerous as the person wielding it and their intentions.
As we walked up to the gate of Camelot one of the guards saw me and went running towards that castle, surely to tell Gwen that I was alright. We walked through the city and I looked down at Morgana in sudden panic. I didn't notice when Merlin had covered her with a blanket, but I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding. No one could see who was underneath the blanket. I sent a thankful look towards Merlin and he nodded back at me. So, he really wasn't an idiot.
Merlin and I entered the citadel to cheering crowds and happy people. We walked up to the steps of the castle and I saw Gwen. I quickly but gently passed Morgana over to Merlin and rushed over to embrace my wife.
Meanwhile at the Lake of Avalon:
The water of Avalon ripple as a body rose out and swam over to shore. The person looked around then up. A dragon could be seen in the distance and they knew exactly when it was going and who was on it. They could feel his presence all around. This person felt a great need to follow him, to go to him, and to see him again. Walking in the direction of Camelot this person only had one though on their mind: Merlin.
Gwaine's POV:
"Percival…" I whispered. My throat was sore, and my voice sounded very hoarse. I remember the pain that Morgana had put me through, the pitch-black snake and its horrible bite. I didn't know what happened to Percival. I remember telling Morgana that Arthur was headed to the Lake of Avalon and Percival showing up and placing him on a horse.
"Hush now… you need to rest. Here you must drink this. It will make you feel better." I heard Percival say to me. He lifted me head gently and poured a vial into my mouth.
"Ugh that tastes horrible." I respond, but I can already feel my strength returning to me.
"It will make you better. You have to drink another in an hour. You must fight the pain and get recover. Gaius said you need plenty of rest and you should not move so don't even think about it."
I nodded, knowing it would annoy Percival, and gave him a smirk. I then closed my eyes and tried to remember. I needed to know exactly what I told Morgana.
*Flashback*
I struggled to back away from the snake, but it was futile, I could not escape the ropes that restrained me to the ground.
"This is your last chance Sir Gwaine." She said mockingly. "Just tell me where Arthur is, and you will not have to go through the excruciating pain of the Nathair."
I looked up at Morgana, I was horrified when I her eyes flash black afraid that she had cast some type of wicked spell. Instead her features softened and, in her eyes, I saw sympathy, pity, and something else.
"Please." She pleaded. "Just tell her."
"Her? What are you talking about? What has happened to you?" I asked.
"It's her, inside me, she made me−" She was cut off when she grunted in pain. Her eyes flashed black again and her face became guarded and cold again, and in her eyes there was, once again, only hatred.
"That is enough talking. You will tell me where Arthur is."
"What have you done with the Lady Morgana!"
She lunged at me and the snake bit me. I couldn't contain the scream the pain was the worst thing I was ever felt. After what felt like an eternity it stopped.
"Let her go… who are you really?" I managed to breath out. I was very weak, it hurt so much I don't think I could handle another bite. I could see that "Morgana" looked confused.
"Why do you care?" she spit out.
"She was a good person before you came and made her do horrible things. You corrupted the Lady Morgana, someone will find out and they will stop you. You will not get away with hurting the Lady Mor−AHHH"
The Nathair bit my right in the neck. The pain was unbearable.
"Everyone hater her now, who will stop to question the evil sorceress. Now where is your king? Where is ARTHUR?!"
"AVALON!" I scream out unable to handle the pain any longer. She removes the snake and places it back into the box and returns the box to its place in her bag and runs off to her horse. "I'm sorry my king."
Seconds later Percival shows up.
"She rides for Avalon. I have failed." I gasp out before I loses consciousness.
*End Flashback*
"Percival… Morgana…"
"Shh do not worry Gwaine she will pay for wha−"
"NO!" I exclaim. "She… she is not herself. Someone has poss- posses-…"
"Possessed her?" Percival asks. I can only nod.
"The Lady Morgana is in there. She needs help. Do not let her die, she is innocent. Please." I plead as the last of my energy leaves me and I once again fall into the darkness.
Percival's POV:
Gwaine left me much to think about. Just as he lost consciousness again I hear people shouting and I go outside to investigate.
"Sir Percival! Sir Percival! King Arthur has returned with Merlin as well. They have returned alive and well!" a servant girl tells me with much excitement.
If the king is alive then does that mean that Morgana is dead? This could not bode well.
I thank the servant girl for the information and return to Gwaine's side. When he awoke I needed to tell him the news that Arthur was back, but nothing was known of Morgana… no the Lady Morgana. I noticed that it has almost been an hour since the last dose of the draft. I got the next vial ready to make Gwaine take it while he was unconscious.
Arthur's POV:
I raced up the steps to Guinevere and kissed her. I had missed my wife so much I thought I would never see her again.
She took off the Pendragon crest and handed it to me.
"This belongs to you Arthur."
"Long live the King!" Sir Leon yelled.
"Long live the King!" the people repeated.
Gwen looked over at Merlin and saw that he was carrying someone.
"Arthur, who is Merlin holding?"
"I will explain later, my love. First we must get her to physicians' chambers and get her help." Gwen nodded and sent Sir Leon to bring Gaius back to his chambers.
"Merlin take her into your room for more privacy." I emphasized giving Merlin a look to ensure that no one sees Morgana.
"Yes, Sire." Merlin said as he walked up the stairs, gave Gwen a slight bow and raced towards the physician's chambers with Gwen and I following quickly behind. With Morgana in Merlin's arms I opened the door for him and saw Percival talking to Gwaine.
"Arthur!" they both yelled.
I saw Merlin take the distraction and move swiftly to his chambers and closed the door.
"Arthur, Sire, are you alright? What happened? Who was Merlin carrying?" his knights questioned. I couldn't think Merlin was behind a closed door with Morgana who could awaken any second. I needed to be there.
"I'm fine. We'll speak for what happened later. On the way back, we found… a girl. She was severely injured and need a skilled physician. Gwen, love, could you send for Gaius and inform him that he is needed urgently by his King's order please. I will to be in there with Merlin."
"Yes, of course. I will get Gaius straight away. You two are so sweet worrying about people." She sends me a sweet smile and heads out the door.
"Please send Gaius in as soon as he gets here." I tell Percival as a walk towards Merlin's chambers.
"Yes, sire." I hear him respond.
I open Merlin's door and see him quickly cover Morgana's face with the blanket.
"Oh, it's you." He says removing the blanket once more.
"Of course, it's me. How is she Merlin?"
"I can't be sure. Her heart beat is normal and the cut on her head has completely disappeared."
"Um… Sire, do you have… uh any idea what happened to the Lady Morgana? Um I mean do you know where Morgana is or if she's hurt or alive or um sick?" We heard Percival's muffled voice coming through the door sounding timid and unsure.
"Umm no, we haven't seen her since… the battle!" I say staring directly at Morgana. "We haven't seen her since the battle in Camlann."
"Sire, I have information about the Lady Morgana!" Gwaine shouted.
"Both him and Percival called her 'the Lady Morgana' Arthur. Did you notice?" Merlin whispered.
"Yes, I did notice. Percival corrected himself, but Gwaine… he seems to be worried."
"Maybe you should go see what Gwaine has to say?"
"But Morgana−" Arthur was cut off by someone trying to open the door.
Sire, it is I, Gaius. The Queen has called for me. She says you have brought someone who is in need of my skills as a physician.
"Yes Gaius. If you could take a few steps back. All of you." I say. I signal Merlin to cover Morgana once more as I head to the door.
"Alright you open the door and when Gaius comes in you close it and lock it. I'll keeps Gaius quiet. We need to explain before he sees her." I whisper. Merlin nods and moves to do as I say.
"It'd be best if only Gaius comes in. More people might frighten her."
"Yes, Sire." I hear in response.
Merlin opens the door and I rush Gaius in. I give Gwen a quick smile trying to reassure her, but I could tell it didn't work. Merlin quickly closes the door and latches the lock. I turn around and signal Gaius to remain quiet just as he is about to speak.
"Now Gaius. We need to explain some things to you before we can let you say anything. You cannot make any noise until we are finished. Do you understand?" I say keeping a low voice. Gaius nods looking very worryingly towards the bed.
I motion for him to sit down and when he does Merlin and I begin telling him all that has happened, and their suspicion of Morgana being controlled.
"This is very dangerous. What if Merlin's magical burst did nothing to Morgana? What if she is still evil and nothing has changed? Do you want her to be healthy and fully capable of attacking you and Camelot, Sire?" Gaius said after the explanation.
"That is enough Gaius." I say firmly. "Morgana is my sister and I have faith that what she has been doing has not been out of her own free will. You will find out what is wrong with her and we will heal her. Even if we must use magic. I am getting my sister back." I say with passion and authority.
"Yes, Sire. As you wish, but I fear that if there is a problem with Morgana, as you both believe, then my knowledge of the magical world will not be enough to solve it. Our best chance is that Morgana knows what has happened to her or we can find someone who does know." Gaius responded calmly.
"Kilgharrah will know. He will be able to help Morgana." Merlin interjects.
All the sudden grunts and groans could be heard from Morgana and whispering could be heard from outside the door.
"Morgana is waking up." Merlin says.
"Really Merlin. How could you tell?" I reply sarcastically.
Just then Morgana opens her eyes and looks around. She looks very worried.
"Where am I? Where is Gwaine? Is he alright?" Morgana asks.
"Gwaine?!" We all shout in surprise.
As it turns out this day could get stranger.
